17:46 That's it from a sunny day at Newmarket and my last visit to the course this year and to close the afternoon a pretty sunset.
If I am not mistaken this is my final flat turf action of 2011. Tomorrow it is back to jumping action as we are at Ascot, from Newmarket a very good afternoon. 17:31 Hawridge King made a valiant attempt to make all but was overhauled two out. The one who ran on was Gulf Of Naples, who had been settled in around fifth place, giving another victory for Silvestre De Sousa in his quest for his first jockeys title. Sohcahtoa was running on well and came home a length and a half back in second with Dark Ranger, running on best of all, a short head further back in third. 17:05 It seems odd but we conclude the eight race card with the longest race of the day as ten go to post for the two mile Racing UK Handicap. 16:55 A good little contest in which Heyward Girl made all, bravely holding off a determined challenge from Billyrayvalentine to record a neck victory. Zabeel Park was an early challenger but the filly dropped out of contention quickly approaching two out and she finished tailed off. Parc de Launay came home third with Avonmore Star, who ran to his best, back in fourth.
16:34 We finally have a small field race as just six go to post for the six furlong NGK Spark Plugs Conditions Stakes. Just the one comment from the parade ring which relates to Bop It, who was doing just that, very much on his toes. 16:16 Quite an open contest with seven contenders almost line abreast as they passed the furlong pole. As they progressed for home though it was Matthew Cosham on the joint favourite May Be Some Time who was slowly pulling clear of his rivals and he went on to record a length victory. Chasing him home was Nichole Nordblad on Conducting and she, in turn finished a length and a half clear of the remainder. There was a battle for third with Quite A Catch under Justin Newman just holding off the fast finishing Isingy Red under Nathan Alison. Somewhat surprisingly this was Matthew Cosham's first winner at Headquarters.
16:10 Onto the Rowley Mile for our next race, the Betfair Racing Excellence Apprentice Jockeys' Training Series Final Handicap, with twelve off to post. 15:47 Well if Artistic Jewel bolted up in the previous race then I'm not sure what superlative to use to describe the win of Hawaafez in this contest. Sent off the 7/2 favourite she came home in the manner of a 2/7 winner, destroying the opposition and coming home seven lengths clear of the runner-up Moment Of Time. If that wasn't impressive enough the runner-up was herself eight lengths clear of third placed Miss Topsy Turvy. It was a race of differing opinions with Silvestre De Sousa and Jamie Spencer taking Jeu De Vivre and Vita Lika respectively down the far side, whilst the remaining nine runners came towards the stands rail. Milnagavie led the stands side group from Just Lille and the eventual winner. A furlong and a half out Richard Hills took Hawaafez clear and the race, as a contest, was over in a matter of strides.
15:21 Race five is another fillies' contest, the 1m 4f EBF 'Archipenko' Fillies' Handicap with eleven going to post. Encore Une Annee was a bit of a head shaker, Misty Isles is jig-jogging around like a dressage horse. 15:10 A very impressive winner in Artistic Jewel who absolutely bolted up, recording a 3½ length victory. Pulling clear at the furlong pole she ran on putting the race beyond any doubt. All the joint favourite, Excelette, could do was watch her rival pull clear, as she herself battled to hold off challenging rivals. Excelette did retain second spot, albeit by a diminishing half length from Radio Gaga who was running on late. Hidden Passion, who was with the pace throughout, indeed leading in the early stages, held on to take fourth prize money. The other joint-favourite Miss Lahar finished fifth. However there was only one horse to talk about in this contest and Artistic Jewel looks to be a cut above her rivals and on todays evidence she will perform over further than six furlongs. 14:55 Our feature contest is the "Dubawi" EBF Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes, a Listed contest over six furlongs. Alices's Dancer was very keen to post, Hidden Passion was ponied to the start. Excelette, Judas Jo and Villeneuve were all taken steadily to post. 14:32 At least the paddock negative actually did finish last this time so I have retained some dignity, finally. Also after the shock result in the first division, the natural order was restored as the favourite, Better Announce, took the spoils getting the better of Moodhill and Mawaqeet in a three way battle to the line. The trio were prominent throughout but Richard Hughes cajoled his mount to lead inside the final half furlong, eventually recording a half length victory. Moodhill, the Maktoum first string, just held off the second string Mawaqeet by a neck to take second spot. The finished clear of the remainder who were headed by Paramythi.
14:15 Division two of the Christine Kilker memorial next. If you want to make some money then, on my form so far today, back my paddock negative Tiger Would who was quite fractious in the paddock. 13:56 Well if you want to get rich quick just follow my paddock negatives as for the second race running the paddock negative has gone and won. Beaufort Scale passed both the market leaders Fa'iz and Qannaas to spring a shock 33/1 victory, although it would be an exaggeration to say he blew away his rivals in recording a 1¼ length victory. Fa'iz and Qannaas were to the fore from the start with Fa'iz holding a slight advantage throughout. However Beaufort Twelve was keen to track the leaders and inside the final furlong he eased ahead of the market leaders. Qannaas was a comfortable runner-up, with Fa'iz just holding off the fast finishing Press Baron to finish third, a further length and a half behind.
13:45 Going to post Press Baron took a keen hold and Noble Thought was taken down on a very short rein. Fa'iz and Petrol both looked good in their coats. 13:41 Race two is Division One of the Christine Kilker Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes, a two-year-old contest over seven furlongs with eleven off to post. Beaufort Twelve was a bit edgy and nervous in the parade ring. 13:25 Now that race has made me look a complete and utter fool as the two runners I thought needed the run came home first and second well clear of their rivals - is it time to pack my bags and go home? The odds-on favourite Opera Flute and Mark Johnston's Glen Ellyn shared the early pace along with Titus Bolt. As a gap opened near the far rail Vivid Blue ran ran on, hitting the front around a furlong from home. Meanwhile Muaamara was hitting traffic problems and had to work around runners but once clear ran on well. Indeed he ran on so well he came home to win with a half-length advantage. Vivid Blue took second spot. It was a further six lengths back to Opera Flute in third spot. Vicgernic, the third newcomer, did not have a clue what he was doing and was always tailed off. Somemothersdohavem was unruly at the start and was withdrawn. 13:15 Someothersdohavem was really fighting his rider on the way to post. 13:11 The opening contest is the Prestige Vehicles EBF 'Sleeping Indian' Maiden Stakes with eight two-year-olds off to post for the six furlong contest. Two of the newcomers, Muaamara and Vivid Blue, both look as though they need the run. Titus Bolt and Vicgernic were both pulling slightly. 13:02 A few more people here than last week but it is, by no means, busy.
12:42 The non-runner count is now five, details on the right. 12:16 Good afternoon from Newmarket where it is sunny and there is the usual tail wind, although not as strong as it has been recently. If you are coming to Newmarket there is traffic chaos in all directions. 09:26 The non-runner count is now three. 07:52 After 2mm of rain yesterday and a heavy overnight dew the official going is Good (8.1) There are, currently, two non-runners.
