21:33 That’s it from a chilly Great Leighs. Very quiet crowd wise but some very exciting finishes.
Our next live action will be from Ascot on Saturday.
From Great Leighs good evening.
21:30 Who said all weather racing is boring – no it wasn’t me was it?
Well another cracking finish in our finale.
Just Observing coming back after a 524 day lay off, attempted to make all and only just failed to take the spoils at what would have been a juicy 28/1.
He was done on the line by that man Catlin again as he managed to find a gap on joint favourite Folio as they crossed the line, to record a head victory from the front runner. A 41/1 treble for Catlin.
Fandango Boy ran on to take third.
The other joint favourite Rawdon, well supported on course, ran no sort of race and was never in contention.
20:55 A mile and a quarter seller for our penultimate race.
Hayley Turner had a hairy start on Tigerbythetale as the horse almost fell out of the stalls and Hayley did well to hang on.
Clear Sailing, under Chris Catlin, set off in front and had a good three or four length lead turning for home.
The first challenger was Murfreesboro, however he did not seem keen at all to pass the leader, despite Darren Williams throwing the kitchen sink at it. It also looked as though 10 furlongs could well be too far for the horse and Darren Williams seemed to accept defeat a furlong out.
No such qualms over distance for Bavarica, who came with a late challenge under Amy Baker and only just failed in an even closer finish than the last race.
20:36 A postscript to our second race, as expected Chris Catlin did pick up a holiday for his ride on Little Carmela, a three day ban for careless riding.
20:24 A five furlong sprint with an absolutely cracking finish in an incident filled race.
Ivory Silk was the 11/10 favourite and he was involved in the finish – more on that later.
The first incident happened at the start when Almaty Express seemed to burst out of the stalls, however he didn’t gain any advantage and he managed to knock Fromsong in the process.
Fromsongs bad luck continued as he clipped heels on the turn.
Wotashirtfull jumped out in front in an attempt to make all.
The favourite was way back coming into the home straight before Chris Catlin started to challenge, initially with hands and heels before being hard driven inside the final furlong. Running on well he only just failed to head Wotashirtful on the line.
There was no bid for the winner in the post race auction.
19:59 Down half a furlong for the unusual distance of 1m 5½f.
Strident was the one who tried to go for an all the way victory, however his challenge only lasted for one circuit.
As they turned for home one would have been forgiven for thinking the race would come down to a battle between Green Day Packer and Viscount Rossini, with the very well bred Limelight in with a chance if good enough, the same could also be said for the favourite Prince Of Medina.
However in the end none of the four ended up taking the honours as Amwell Brave, almost last turning for home was launched with a devastating run down the centre of the course, to take a 2½ length victory. Jockey Simon Whitworth, just turned 47, showing the youngsters how to ride a perfectly timed race.
Limelight ran on for second, shaking his head badly and looking to be a very unreliable beast.
The favourite took third but only running on through beaten horses.
To be honest nearly all of the runners in the race looked quirky – a terrible race.
19:27 An extra mile for our second contest and another well backed winner, although this time it was the favourite in the shape of Little Carmela, although Chris Catlin may pick up a holiday courtesy of the Stewards but more on that later.
For a while it looked as though we were going to witness another front running performance as Enthusius set the pace and led until 2 furlongs out. It has to be said the lead was never that great and Catlin on the favourite was always tracking the leader before taking the lead two out.
Ice Bellini was another to track the front runner.
Once Little Carmela hit the front he faced two challengers. Ice Belini and the running on Double Spectre.
The winner did drift across and interfere with Double Spectre near the furlong marker and Catlin did have his whip in the “wrong hand”, but the challenger was beaten at the time.
More of a danger to the winner was Ice Belini who, having looked to be beaten at the furlong pole ran on well and was only denied by the line coming in the nick of time for the favourite. The winning distance being a diminishing head.
Double Spectre finished in third, with the running on Champagne Shadow finishing fourth and looking like a runner that will need further.
The first four finished well clear of the remainder.
18:55 A six furlong handicap to get us underway this evening and something of a shock win with a theoretically unfancied runner, from a bad draw, leading from pillar to post.
Actually unfancied isn’t quite true as the winner, Billy Red, was backed in from 11/1 into 15/2, so somebody fancied it.
Taking the lead from the start Fergus Sweeney soon had the winner tucked in just off the rail.
Turning for home the lead was only a length, however in the home straight he extended his lead and the rivals seemed unable to make a challenge.
Leading Edge did run on to take the runners up spot but was a never nearer 2¾ lengths behind the winner.
Capefly who had tracked the winner came home in third place.
Splash The Cash under Jamie Spencer was to the fore early on but faded towards the end, having been a real handful going down to the start.
18:23 Good evening from Great Leighs where it is chilly but there is no sign of the fog which blighted the meeting here last Thursday.
Sill only the three non-runners and the action gets underway in just under half an hour.
14:22 Great Leighs has a 6:50 start and the official going is Standard.
There are currently three non-runners, details on the right.
