Racing Live -  Goodwood 18th May 2011

17:42 That's it from Goodwood, it has to be said not as strong a renewal as the corresponding fixture last year. The winner of the "Oaks trial" isn't even entered in the Classic in just over a fortnights time.

17:40 Something of a messy contest which eventually went to Six Wives, holding off the late charge of the only boy in the field, Sherjawy.

Blac Baccara blew her chances at the start, almost falling out of the stalls and never able to recover the defecit.

Six Wives hit the front whilst steering a left hand course managing to go from the centre of the course to the stands rail and not looking that impressive.

The unimpressive favourite, Athwaab, was prominent early doors but soon hit reverse eventually only beating one home.

17:26 Athwaab was the least impressive going to post, having to be restrained as she fought her jockey.

17:21 The final contest sees six going to post for the five furlong TurfTV.co.uk Apprentice Handicap.

Commandingpresence was anything but in the parade ring, swishing her tail and on her toes. Athwaab and Sherjawy were both attempting to pull their respective handlers arms out. Six Wives was the pick on looks.

17:20 I think most of the racegoers here don't realise there are seven races - it's like Wolves on a winter Monday crowd wise now

17:04 Backers of the well backed favourite Mundana probably have every right to feel slightly hard done by as the filly was tardy out of the stalls, giving ground to all her rivals yet she only failed to win by half a length.

The spoils went to Doricemay, who was ridden enterprisingly by Pat Dobbs, tracking the leading group before making a challenge to overhaul the long time leader, Miss Mediator, inside the final furlong.

Panoptic has followed similar tactics to the winner and had looked booked for second spot before being passed by the flying favourite.

One for the notebook is the debutant Brinmore, flying at the finish and only just failing to head Miss Mediator for fourth.

16:43 Our biggest field of the afternoon sees 13 go to post for the Goldring Security Services Maiden Fillies' Stakes over seven furlongs.

A few of them are whinnying but Brinmore seems to the instigator, setting the others off. Dixie Land Band and Miss Mediator are both getting a little bit warm. All Honesty is a head shaker and A B Celebration is jig-joggy.

Mundana looks best of a moderate lot.

16:30 A funny sort of race and certainly not the quality of last years renewal.

This year the Godolphin runner was Badeel and Frankie Dettori set the modest pace on him. A couple of lengths back was Picture Editor and Namibian, followed my Masked Marvel with the favourite Auld Burns giving all his rivals a start.

As they turned for home Picture Editor was the first to challenge the long time leader but his effort was short lived as Namibian briefly took up the running only to be headed by Masked Marvel who ran on eye-catchingly.

Richard Hughes asked Auld Burns for an effort but there was no response from the colt.

Masked Marvel had the race sewn up and came home three lengths clear of Namibian, about whom it could be asked should Joe Fanning have got to work on him a bit earlier.

Picture Editor was a disappointing third, with Auld Burns even more of a disappointment in fourth.

Badeel paid the price for his pace setting and finished last.

As with the winner of the "Oaks Trial" William Hill have halved the price of the winner for the upcoming classic, as Masked Marvel is quoted at 25/1 for The Derby.

16:06 We have had "not an Oaks trial" we now have "not a Derby trial" as five line up for the 1m 3f IBA Cocked Hat Stakes, won last year by the Derby third Rewilding.

Badeel was slightly on his toes and shaking his head quite strongly. Namibian was pulling slightly. It was hard to judge Picture Editor as he was covered by a huge rug but he seemed quite relaxed, as did Auld Burns.

15:56 A dramatic race in which Alsadaa attempted to make all and, at one point, looking as though he had stolen the race. By half way he was at least 15 lengths clear of his rivals and even three out his lead was eight and it looked as though the front running tactics may have worked - however it was not to be.

The chasing group had been headed by Sherman McCoy and Saborido, with Psi just behind but never looking happy. By contrast to Alsadaa's tactics Richard Hughes was holding up Cosimo De Medici to ensure he got the trip.

Approaching two out Saborido and Sherman McCoy were still leading the chasing and closing group with Cosimo De Medici about to join them.

After two out the writing was on the wall for the front runner as the distress signals came out loud and clear.

Saborido and Cosimo De Medici soon swept past the exhausted front runner and had a good battle to the line with Cosimo De Medici winning the battle to record a neck victory.

The favourite Dazinski took a while to get into his stride and he just collared third spot from Alsadaa albeit three lengths behind the front duo.

Psi was very disappointing, coming home a tailed off last.

15:36 Up to two miles for the next, the RUK Sussex Stayers Handicap, with seven going to post, last years narrow runner-up Epsom Salts being the absentee.

Not too many paddock clues, Alsadaa was pulling slightly and, to a lesser extent, so was Saborido.

15:28 William Hill have cut the winner to 20/1 in the Oaks betting, from 40/1

15:21 Well Beatrice Aurore may have been a drifting favourite but nobody told the horse as she came home one and a half lengths clear of her rivals, under a patient Ted Durcan ride.

Highest and Date With Destiny shared the running, with the favourite settled mid-division and the well backed Poplin settled well in rear.

Lining up for home they were in Noah's Ark mode up front with Highest and Date With Destiny a good few lengths clear of Imperial Pippin and Beatrice Aurore, whilst Poplin was still at the back.

Date With Destiny was the first to crack leaving Highest clear but Beatrice Aurore began to make steady progress to close and lead inside the final furlong with Highest taking second spot.

Imperial Pippin was a similar distance back in third, a good performance on only her second racecourse appearance.

Poplin finally made some progress to finish fourth.

15:10 The first of our feature races next, the 1m 2f Casco Height Of Fashion Stakes, a fillies Listed contest and an Oaks Trial in everything but name. Won last year by the Oaks winner Snow Fairy, none of the seven competing this year look to be of her standard.

Belle Royale was pulling very hard, Beatrice Aurore was jig-joggy. Highest looks a lovely filly and is the pick on looks.

14:40 The bookies had this race spot on, with Club Oceanic and Tropical Beat sent off joint favourites and the pair battled out the finish, well clear of their rivals.

The pair pulled clear inside the final furlong and when the line came it was Club Oceanic, under Frankie Dettori, who prevailed by a head.

Mutayaser finished third, 3 3/4 lengths further back.

Unsurprisingly it was the Mark Johnston runner, Coax, who set the pace, holding the advantage until the cavalry  charged two out.

Askaud was prominent until dropping out late on and coming home last.

Persian Herald gave Jim Crowley a difficult ride but ran on late to finish fourth.

14:22 Race two is the Paul Spencer 50th Birthday Handicap, a 1m 1f contest with seven taking their chance.

Persian Herald and Tropical Heat were both quite buzzy in the parade ring, most notably the latter.

14:04 Not a good race for odds-on backers of a nervous disposition, as Glee makes exceptionally hard work of taking the opener.

Half a furlong out it looked as though the 4/9 favourite would have to settle for third spot as the Godolphin newcomer Falls Of Lora was going to pull off a shock victory with the experienced Marygold destined for second.

Richard Hughes finally managed to galvanize Glee and she came home half a length clear of Falls Of Lora with Marygold a further half back in third.

the one to take out of the contest must be the runner-up, who should be even better for having the run.

13:47 The opening contest is the six furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes, with seven two-year-olds facing the starter.

Glee, the hot favourite, was a bit on her toes when she first came into the parade ring but soon relaxed, unlike her stablemate Lolita Lebron who is being a real handful.

Debutant Single Girl was whinnying and Thefillyfromsutton has plenty of scope to grow.

Falls Of Lora, temperamentally fine but very well rugged up so hard to judge.

12:30 Good afternoon from an overcast Goodwood, currently dry but there is some drizzle in the air.

We currently have three non-runners, details on the right.

07:29 The going is Good, Good to Firm in places on the round course.

The first 2 furlongs of Mile course dolled out 5 yards Lower bend dolled out 6 yards from the 6 furlong marker to the 2 furlong marker up the straight. Distances increased by approximately 12 yards.

Last year Rewilding provided the "wow" factor at this meeting - not sure if anything that good here today.

There are currently no non-runners.
