Racing Live - Ffos Las 12th September 2009

18:20 Well that’s it from Ffos Las where the weather was not the star of the afternoon – but a young rider from Japan named Kosei Miura, having his first ride in this country and making it a winning one.

Our next report will be from the Listowel Festival.

From sunny west Wales a very good evening.

18:18 OK time for a few puns, for which I make no apologies.

I could say Arleen Phillips waltzed home to win the last but that would be more of an exaggeration.

More accurately she showed a quickstep inside the final furlong to record a neck victory.

Of course it takes two to tango and the partner in the swinging finish was Arabian Silk, who was doing her best work in the closing stages.

Mr Plod is the one who could possibly have had two left feet, coming home a further neck back in third.

Unlike the first division there was a clear favourite this time with Primo Dilettante, a winner at LIngfield four days ago and carrying a 6lb penalty for that victory.

In truth it wasn’t the penalty that cost him the race. He ran prominently in the early stages, even leading for a while as they turned for home, dropping out in the home straight and coming home last. More likely this race came too soon.

17:38 A divided 1m 2f  handicap to conclude proceedings here this afternoon and the first division was a very tight betting heat with three of the eleven runners going off the 3/1 co-favourites.

The betting was spot on as the top three in the betting filled all three places – little wonder the crowd was cheering, especially as it wasn’t clear which one would win until the very final strides.

It was a 14/1 shot, Benozzo Gozzoli, who led the field until they turned for home, pressurised by Heavenly Saint.

It was the latter who held the advantage two out before Screaming Brave, one of the three favourites, then took up the running approaching the furlong marker.

Next to run on was another of the three jollies, Chicken Daawe, and it was this pair who battled to the line with Chicken Daawe getting the call by a neck.

The third of the favourites, Corrib, was also doing her best work in the closing stages.

17:07 Well after all the excitement of the previous race it was back to normal service in our sixth, a five furlong handicap.

The filly Impressible set off in front, with Kay Two keeping on her tail.

It was a race where the complexion changed inside the final two furlongs, where the front two were swallowed up.

The Jobber and Haajes were both running on well and The Jobber looked the better of the two.

However Haajes responded well to pressure and turned around a dismal performance at Doncaster three days ago to win today by a length.

This is turning out to be something of a fast course with the winner recording a time of 56.35”.

Judge Di Clarke was called into action to determine the runners-up spot with The Jobber getting the call over Sharpeded Edge by the smallest of distances, a nose.

The favourite, Rocket Rob, was never in the race and only beat one home.

16:35 Well it had to happen – Kosei Miura on his first ride in this country just had to win the race for a fairytale finish as Royal Diamond took the feature race the totesport.com Handicap.  Kosei Miura

Apparently Miura is on a par with David Beckham in terms of popularity in Japan. He only started riding a year ago and in his first season he rode 39 winners.

He now has a 100% record here in the UK.

Back to the race Miura settled Royal Diamond in fifth spot before making his charge two out and hitting the front a furlong out, taking the lead off Chiberta King.

But all the news surrounds Miura. He arrived in the UK just five days ago and will be here for three weeks.

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott said Miura rode exactly as requested “which is unusual for a jockey.”

He is with Sir Mark following a request from the Japanese authorities.

15:56 Finally – I have managed to get it right in the paddock as recent Yarmouth winner and the pick of the paddock, Ela Gorri Mou took the handicap, in a time three seconds faster than the previous contest.

Backers were kept on tenterhooks as Edward Creighton was very patient on the filly, holding her up before running on inside the final furlong.

Sir Orpen set the pace, leading until two out – when the complexion of the race changed.

The other co-favourite Morocchius hit the front but the lead was only small. Bolanderi and Ela Gorrie Mou both running on managed to head Morocchius.

Ibbetson was prominent for most of the contest, harrying the leader until dropping out tamely two out.

15:31 Race four is our first handicap of the afternoon and, like the last, over the mile course.

For those who want to follow the paddock negative system, Richo has the “honour” of being the parade ring negative – very much on his toes.

Conversely Ela Gorrie Mou was the best looking.

15:23 Well it had to happen didn’t it – the hat trick is up as another paddock negative wins and another favourite is done.

This mile contest wasn’t run at any great pace and recent Leicester winner Aegean Destiny set the pace, with Pearl Of Kent following.

There was little change in the order until Superhoops made some progress turning for home, ultimately flattering to deceive.

In the straight Aegean Destiny still had the lead but the favourite Jehu came and challenged, briefly getting his head in front – but only for a stride or two.

Agean Destiny was soon in front and looking the winner, until David Probert launched Dr Mathias with a last gasp run, winning by a short head in the final stride.

Backers of Agean Destiny have every right to feel somewhat aggrieved as Pat Dobbs was carrying 1lb overweight.

15:00 Well if the current form continues Dr Mathias will take this contest as he was the negative in the parade ring.

Aegean Destiny was the paddock pick.

14:51 Well another shock result in our second contest and guess what?

Yep the paddock negative went on to win and the odds-on favourite was terrible.

There was also a decent punt on the newcomer Stefanki. Available at 8/1 this morning he opened on-course at 3/1 and was backed into 9/4.

Stefanki showed greenness by missing the break and was quite green in the early stages before running on very well in the closing stages.

The odds-on favourite, by contrast, set off in front only to be swamped in the closing stages and coming home fifth 3¾ lengths behind the winner.

Mark Johnston’s Glen Shiel was settled round about fourth early on, unusual foe a Johnston runner (incidentally his first runner at the course) before making late progress and hitting the front two out.

He looked to be the easy winner, until Stefanki launched a very late run, closing in on the leader.

Come the line Glen Shiel managed to hold on by a diminishing half length.

The one to take out of the contest, however, is the runner-up Stefanki, who should go one better in the very near future.

14:35 Still with the two-year-olds for the second contest but up a furlong to six.

I am loath to suggest any more negatives after the last contest, but what the heck.

Glen Shiel was on his toes and a few of them were getting warm, especially Robens Rock, who lookes as though he has a case of rabies!!!

Some deem this to be a negative, others don’t  but for completeness Buffett was gnashing his teeth well.

14:20 Well so much for paddock picks.

Morgans Choice may not have impressed in the parade ring but what a contrast on the track. Set off in front with outsider of the field, Dimaire, the pair held the advantage throughout – battling all the way to the line.

Morgans Choice
managed to keep his head in front, giving a winning spare ride for Fran Norton, substituting for the injured Paul Doe.

In contrast to Morgans Choice, the paddock pick and favourite, The Mighty Atom, ran no sort of race and Hayley Turner was urging her from the start and she never looked to be a contender – eventually finishing last.

The newcomer Hounds Ditch missed the break and was another never in the race.

13:55 Our opening contest is a two-year-old maiden over five furlongs and, to be symmetrical, there are five runners going to post.

Morgan’s Choice would be the parade ring negative, on his toes and very nervous.

The Mighty Atom looks the best although newcomer Hounds Ditch was looking very relaxed on debut.

13:44 Well I would suggest a reasonable crowd, I don't think as big as the opening flat fixture and nowhere near as big as thetwo jump fixtures.

13:33 It will be interesting to see how big a crowd we attract this afternoon as this is an extra fixture, transferred from Great Leighs.

13:19 Ffos Las is awash, if that is the word, with Japanese media as young superstar apprentice Kosei Miura who has a ride here later on.

12:55 Good afternoon from Ffos Las, where it is a gloriously sunny afternoon.
