Racing Live - Fairyhouse 4th March 2009

17:49 That's it from a cold but dry Fairyhouse where we have had a good afternoon's racing.

From a sunny Ireland it is a good evening.

17:45 I suppose it shouldn’t be any surprise when I tell you the bumper was trained by Willie Mullins and Citizen Vic managed to get something back for the punters, coming home the 9/10 favourite.

To the fore for most of the race the winner was kept company by Nina Carberry on On My Own and it looked as though the pair were going to have  a good battle as they turned into the home straight.

However the final furlong seemed a furlong too far for On My Own as he seemed to go into reverse, with the running on duo of Ball Of Blue and General Phil relegating Carberry to fourth.

Speaking after the race Willie Mullins said the winner will next be seen over obstacles and "is a good jumping prospect."

17:22 Our final contest over obstacles was a marathon extended 2m 7f hurdle.

Two runners set out to make all The Flying Dustman and Dulgodti Bob and the latter managed it in convincing style, winning by seven lengths.

It was one of those races where there was little change in the order until the final stages.

As the winner increased his lead the further they ran a big eye catcher was Letterlee Star who was running on impressively in the run-in.

Third place went to Jack’s Island who tracked the front two for most of the contest.

The joint favourites had contrasting runs.  Don’t Rush It was had every chance if good enough but wasn’t and came home fifth, whilst Root Cause was never better than mid-division, eventually coming home 12th .

16:49 A 2m handicap chase for race five and it became 3-2 for the bookmakers with 12/1 shot Real Overdrive turning over the 6/4 favourite Monte Cinto.

Two runners set the pace in the contest with San Angelo and Dontwakedtrainer swapping the lead for most of the contest.

As they turned for home San Angelo faded out of contention whilst Real Overdrive, who had been to the fore in the early stages before dropping out half way before rallying again at the end.

Another battling on at the end was the only filly in the contest, Canadian Sunset, was also running on at the end.

Dontwakedtrainer was also still in contention at the last but took a crashing fall.

16:20 A cracking finish to our fourth contest with Prince Massin coming from almost nowhere and eat up the ground to claim a 1¾ victory.

Finnegans Girl had been the pacesetter in the 2m 5f handicap chase before dropping out of contention in the back straight.

As they turned for home it looked to be  a two horse race as Chill Out (running on) and Handy Jack (also running on) braced the turn well in front of their rivals.

However as I said Prince Massini was coming like a train and approaching the last it was all change as Chill Out did exactly that and Prince Massini leapt past Handy Jack to take up the running and claim a well timed victory.

The favourite, Money Belt, was never in contention.

15:51 Well the punters winning run came to the end in the third race, our opening chase.

Nonetheless we saw a very impressive winner, certainly more impressive than the two odds-on shots in the first two races, in the shape of Checkpointcharlie, trained by Charlie Swann and in the familiar green and gold of JP McManus.

I Will Ya set the early pace with Plunge and Shesadoll in close attendance with Grand Lahou taking it up as they passed the judge for the first time.

Grand Lahou stayed in the lead until the running on winner passed him two out.

Shesadoll, who looked beaten ran on again in the latter stages to take second.

The favourite Boulavogue ran on in the closing stages to take third with Grand Lahou taking fourth.
Information was with the pace mid-race just fading in the closing stages.

15:17 A very short priced favourite in our second contest with Ruby Walsh riding Apt Approach for Willie Mullins.

Sent off the 2/9 favourite he looked nothing like that sort of odds as he almost stumbled over the first, although thereafter his jumping was fluent.

Leading initially he was passed by Alocin after making the mistake and Walsh seemed happy to allow Alocin the lead.

By the end of the back straight Walsh had the jolly back in front and the only real question was how far he would actually win by. In the end the distance was a convincing 11 lengths.

Askwith was a running on second  with Heavenly Bond taking the third spot.

The winner will be lined up for forthcoming festivals.

14:49 First blood to the punters here at a chilly Fairyhouse as Chevalier Country took the opener.

Sent off at 4/7 he led from start to finish, although backers must have been worried at the final flight as Street Legal was upsides and looking a serious danger.

However the jolly had enough in hand under Paddy Flood and he came home the 1¼ length victor.

The runner up had been with the pace throughout and the other front runner, Afram Bleu faded in the home straight.

Eddie Dowling was making eye catching progress in the latter stages and looks as though a step up in distance could be called for.

Debutant Kingsdale Flyer played up at the start and was withdrawn by the starter.

13:00 The official going is heavy, soft in places.

There is currently one non-runner, but there will be more later as the reserves come out.

12:51 Good afternoon from Fairyhouse where the weather is overcast and rain and sleet showers are forecast.

I am just going to find out what the official going is and the details of any non-runners.
