Racing Live -  Epsom 25th September 2011:

18:00 Now safely on the train it's time for some more on the last race. Richard Hughes had to do some nifty steering to pass rivals to win the race on Vanencha, eventually hitting the front inside the final furlong, having been held up for most of the contest.

Russian Race set the pace but had to settle for fifth place in the end as he was headed by late finishers.

My Learned Friend made a move for home, taking up the running a furlong out only to be headed by the winner, going down by half a length.

Rondeau ran on late to finish third, whilst Frozen Over, who was slowly away, made his challenge to late and had to settle for fourth.

17:19 The very well backed favourite Valencha takes Epsom's final race of 2011, a four timer for Richard Hughes

17:07 Our biggest field of the afternoon as 15 go to post for the final race of Epsom's 2011 season, the totepool Epsom Trainers Championship Finale Handicap over seven furlongs.

I am going to be a little bit unprofessional here as I have a tight dash for a train so I will put up the result as soon as the race is finished but I will put the report online a little bit later.

16:54 Well horses make fools of us all the time - I thought Sandbanks Sizzler was the worse looking going down but he came back the most convincing winner of the afternoon, returning fourteen lengths clear of his rivals having hit the front around two furlongs from home.

Grand Theft Equine set the pace with Russian Storm, Astragal and The Mongoose in close attendance.

Astragal was the first to go for home but his challenge was short lived as Jim Crowley pressed the button on Sandbanks Sizzler and it was race over.

There was a mini-battle for second spot with Astragal getting the better of The Mongoose by a length.

16:41 Back to 1m 2f for our sixth race as ten go to post for the Old Speckled Hen Maiden Stakes.

16:36 In the previous race Megalala got his foot caught in the stall and was withdrawn as a precaution.

16:20 An additional non-runner as Megalala refused to enter the stalls, which is unusual for him as he is normally very well behaved.

Missionaire set the pace when they did eventually go off, with Dubai Glory and  The Bells O Peover chasing.

Coming into Tattenham Corner The Bells O Peover went clear and opened up a good lead. He still had the lead approaching the furlong pole but there were challengers after him and Gunslinger had the leader in his sights.

The six pound penalty The Bells O Peover proved decisive as Gunslinger fired past and went on to record a 1 3/4 length victory.

Shesha Bear ran on to finish second, whilst The Bells O Peover (who holds entries on Thursday and Friday before he takes a hike in the weights on Saturday) could only finish third, with Super Duplex fourth.

16:01 Yet another Epsom Derby, this time the May Family Apprentices' Derby over the 1 1/2 mile Derby course.

After few paddock clues in the earlier races we go to the other extreme in this contest with all but four of the 13 runners pulling to one extent or the other. The ones who were not pulling were Missionaire, Gunslinger, Soundbyte and Beat Route.

5:41 Well no four-timer in this race for Richard Hughes as he comes home stone last on his spare ride Lastofthemohicans.

At the other end of the field Kieren Fallon demonstrated why he is challenging to be champion jockey. He set out to make all on Con Artist, who was keen in the early stages.

Romeo Montague was the only contender to mount a serious challenge, taking the far rail he attacked in the closing stages and even headed headed Con Artist at the furlong pole. However Romeo Montague's resolution should be questioned as Con Artist was able to fight back under a strong Fallon ride and he edged ahead to regain the lead and record a half-length victory.

It was four and a half lengths back to third placed Silver Grey, who was always with the pace.

15:24 Up to 1m 4f for our fourth as eight go to post for the toteswinger Handicap.

This is turning into one of those afternoons where paddock inspection yields little clues. Two jockey changes, four-timer seeking Richard Hughes now rides Lastofthemohicans and John Fahy rides Silver Grey.

15:10 Another messy race and one which Neil Callan on the favourite Dubawi Sound will probably want to forget.

By contrast Richard Hughes is enjoying his afternoon as he completes a hat-trick for his father-in-law Richard Hannon.

Dubawi Sound, on only his second start, was reluctant going into the stalls and when the gates opened he was restrained by Callan. Having been held up Callan then contrived to get himself in all sorts of trouble with nowhere to go and when he finally did extricate himself he still could not decide where to go. Once he finally managed to get a clear run it was too late.

Richard Hughes on Sure Route tracked Norse Blues and Yojimbo. Yojimbo was the first to go for home but Hughes launched a challenge and although he had to work hard he came home three parts of a length clear of Yojimbo.

Our Gal who was doing her best in the closing stages was a length and a quarter back in third, with the favourite a never nearer fourth.

14:51 Another mile contest for race three as seven go to post for the toteexacta Handicap.

Orientalist was pulling slightly. Our Gal looked very nice.

14:40 Only four runners but we still managed to get some argy-bargy and it is also possible the wind may have played a part.

The favourite Mister Music, who like to front run, missed the break and Richard Hughes decided to hold him up.

Gabrial's Gift took up the running and was still leading, towards the centre of the course, three out - when he began to drift towards the far rail carrying across Mister Music who, in turn, mullered Surrey Storm.

Gabrial's Gift was still leading approaching the furlong pole when there was a very strong gust of wind to which he seemed to react and drifted to his right, allowing a gap for Mister Music to exploit and for which he needed no second asking.

Mister Music ran on to record a 2 1/4 length victory.

Gabrial's Gift then ran out of gas and Hint Of Mint ran on to take second spot with the unlucky Surrey Storm back in third.

1424 Gabrial's Gift looked best going to post.

14:20 Just four runners for our second contest, the Green King IPA Conditions Stakes over a mile.

Absolutely no clues from the parade ring for our second race, all four runners looked really nice.

14:10 A good start to the afternoon for favourite backers as Producer takes the spoils, albeit at a very short price of evens.

Golden Valley set the pace with Producer and Always eager tracking.

Two out Producer set off for home and it was his stablemate Tidy Affair who chased him home, having been well backed, he was only able to get within a length and a quarter of the winner who was recording his third course and distance win.

Pride And Joy was doing his best work at the end to finish third.

13:49 Our opening contest is the Abbot Ale Nursery over seven furlongs with nine off to post.

Whinging Willie was on his toes, Maroosh is a major head shaker. Producer is swishing his tail. Esprit Danseur is a tiny horse.

13:07 Good afternoon from Epsom where it is a bright afternoon with a brisk breeze left to right in the home straight.

10:00 This is the last meeting of the year at Epsom, it seems like only yesterday I was here for the first meeting of the year back on 20th April, where has that time gone?

09:13 The going stick reading at 09:00 is 8.2

08:29 It has been a dry night at Epsom with a heavy dew, the official going is good.

The rails are dolled out 8 yards from 6f to the winning post adding 10 yards to race distances.

There are currently four non-runners.
