Racing Live -  Cartmel 14th July 2011

18:00 That's it from a gloriously sunny day here at Cartmel, a day AP McCoy will have enjoyed very much.

There cannot be a better place to enjoy a days racing than Cartmel and it is even better when the sun is shining.

News on Graham Lee after his fall in the last, he is "shaken up but fine"

Some extra coverage tomorrow with live reports from Hamilton's evening meeting.

17:50 An early incident in the final contest as Saddlers' Supreme unseated Graham Lee at the first and it was a was a heavy landing for Lee who was still being treated as the runners came round on the final circuit, resulting in the fence having to be by-passed.

Cool Star and Friendly Love set the pace although it has to be said the field were well bunched for most of the contest.

Claude Carter was settled behind the leading bunch and was the first to go for home as they ran towards the last. Top weight Cool Baranca had been settled mid-division but by the last was the biggest danger and sure enough he ran on best of all to record a four length victory.

Cool Baranca held on for second with Tamarillo Grove a hard driven third and the front running Cool Star fourth.

History Lesson was well supported in the betting but ran no sort of race.

17:33 Our final contest is the British BBQ Society Novices' Handicap Hurdle over the extended 2m 1f with 11 going to post.

Napoletano is the negative, on his toes and sweating up. Cool Star is a bit skinny. Richie McGrath now rides Friendly Love.

No stand-outs in the parade ring for this final contest.

17:20 AP McCoy came to Cartmel for three rides and he wins all three as Englishtown takes the penultimate contest here at Cartmel.

Looking beaten in second spot as they turned for home you can never write the champ off and he will fight all the way. Sure enough Below The Deck, who took up the running approaching two out, was a sitting target and half way down the run-in McCoy drew level and pulled clear to record a three and a half length victory.

Below The Deck took the runners-up spot with What A Steel a further 3 3/4 back in third.

Auberge who led for most of the contest came home fourth.

17:03 Whilst the sunshine is welcome it does mean the press room at Cartmel is something like the black hold of Calcutta this afternoon

16:58 Another 2m 6f hurdle next as a dozen go to post for the Burlington Stone Handicap Hurdle.

The Snail was getting a little warm in the parade ring. Turf Trivia and Ardesia were both swishing their tails. Largo Verde is a head shaker. Paddock pick is Englishtown to give AP a treble on the afternoon.

16:41 Well the paddock pick obliges as The Tiddly Tadpole comes home seven lengths clear of his rivals.

Bhaltair, who was taking a firm hold, set the pace and was allowed an easy lead with the following group, headed by Zaplamation, happy to go along at their own pace. Tower and The Tiddly Tadpole ware next with the others following in their own time.

Tower made a blunder at the second and although he remained on his feet he interfered with Grethel who did come down.

By the time they approached three out Bhaltair still had the advantage but The Tiddly Tadpole was on his quarters, the pair clear of Talk Of Saafend, with Tower pulling up two out.

Turning through the woods and approaching the last The Tiddly Tadpole hit the front and although looking to have an odd action led the others home.

There was a battle for second spot with Talk Of Saafend running on to deny Bhaltair the runners-up spot by a neck.

Zaplamation was the only other finisher with Lucky Belle pulling-up before the last.

16:28 Back to the smaller obstacles for our three final contests, the first of which is the Cartmel Cheeses Maiden Hurdle over the extended 2m 1f.

Bhaltair had two handlers and was swishing his tail, Lucky Belle looked a bit gangly. The Tiddly Tadpole, who was early to post, was the clear paddock pick.

16:08 It's that man McCoy again, two rides here so far this afternoon and two winners. This time it was Foxesbow who took the spoils, coming home a 3 1/4 length victor.

Downward Spiral set the pace, with Bob Will harrying and also Itzacliche and Crop Walker in close attendance, McCoy settling Foxesbow behind the leading group.

Floreana's race was short lived as she fell at the second.

There was very little change in the order on the second circuit although Sieze, already nearer last than first, was mullered coming out of the woods turn.

On the final circuit the open ditch claimed its second victim as Crop Walker fell.

Quattrocento was the next to go at the water when beaten in fifth, interfering with Downward Spiral. At this point Itzacliche and Foxesbow had a clear lead, with Bob Will and Shulmin the chasers with little chance of catching the front duo.

Foxesbow hit the front in the home straight but McCoy was having to work hard to keep him in front and Itzaclicke was not going down without a fight.

In the end Foxesbow came home 3 1/2 lengths clear of Itzacliche with Shulmin winning the battle for third a further seven in arrears.

15:47 Race four is our longest race of the afternoon, the Weatherbys Bank Handicap Chase with eleven due to face the starter.

This is another contest where there are no clues on visual inspection in the parade ring. Oniz Tiptoes is quite a small horse. Quattrocento looked good, as did Crop Walker. Foxesbow was really relaxed. My pick is just Seize.

15:35 Well that was a cracking finish with judge Brian Goodwill having to revert to the camera to decide the winner.

In the early stages Feeling Peckish and My Condor shared the pace until Feeling Peckish unshipped his rider Tom Garner at the sixth, handing My Condor a huge advantage.

The remainder were well bunched, headed by Lindseyfield Lodge' I'm Your Man, Orpen Wide and Archies Wish.

By the last, which at Cartmel is over two furlongs from home - the longest run-in in the country - it was effectively a four horse race with My Condor just holding the advantage with Soul Magic, Haka Dancer and Colditz all in with a chance.

The four were still well bunched turning for home and My Condor came wide giving an opening for Soul Dancer against the rail and the duo joined battle for the line.

On the line young Gary Rutherford just managed to get Soul Dancers nose in front to record a short head victory over My Condor.

Colditz hung on for third, whilst never looking like winning and he needs to improve his jumping.

Archie's Wish was doing his best work in the closing stages to take fourth spot.

15:13 Another extended 2m 1f chase next with ten off to post for the Winster Valley Brewery Handicap Chase.

I'm glad my life does not depend on picking the winner from paddock inspection alone as they all look to be in good nick. Lindseyfield Lodge has gone to post early. The narrow paddock pick is Colditz who looks he could break out best of all.

14:55 Not much of a spectacle as a race as the hard pulling Cool Touch set the pace, seemingly wanting to jump everything including road crossings and shadows. As they entered the woods for the first time Cool Touch had a 15 length lead over the odds-on favourite Dunowen Point.

Admittedly the field was well strung out by that point with Yachvili, Sea Cliff and Dechiper well behind.

Jumping the last Cool Touch still had the lead but Dunowen Point was within two lengths and by the time they entered the home straight he was poised to lead. Having hit the front he did not look like an odds-on favourite although he did eventually come home 4 1/2 lengths clear.

Yachvili made some late progress to finish third, seven lengths behind the runner-up.

Had Cool Touch settled better the result may have been different.

Dechiper was always behind and never in the race, whilst Sea Cliff was looking booked for second spot until Yachvil's late surge.

14:43 Race two is the Hadwins Beginners' Chase over the extended 2m 1f with five going to post.

Dechiper is like me, carrying a bit of condition. Dunowen Point was pulling slightly but more in keeness than naughtiness. Cool Touch and Sea Cliff both looked nice, although this is a race I would rather watch than play in.

14:35 When McCoy comes to Cartmel it pays to take heed as he makes all on He's A Hawker to take our opening contest, although he was made to fight to the line by 7lb claimer Joe Colliver on the favourite Heart Of Dubai.

He's A Hawker shared the running with Sara's Smile,  a few lengths clear of Lava Lamp and Hookey's Diamond with the favourite in next rank.

It was one of those contests where there was little change in the order for most of the contest.

Running into the wood bend for the final time McCoy had shaken off Sara's Smile but the favourite was on striking distance.

Turning for home He's A Hawker came wide allowing Colliver to challenge on the champs inside.

Half way down the home straight Heart Of Dubai did briefly get his head in front but McCoy was having none of it and eventually recorded  a length victory.

Rain Stops Play ran on well to finish third, three and a half lengths behind the runner-up.

14:10 Time to go racing as they parade for the opening Furness Fish & Game Novices' Hurdle over 2m 6f with 11 going to post.

Sara's Smile was pulling slightly although not as bad as Lava Lamp, who was also swishing his tail. Gearbox is quite skinny, whilst Darden Burn and Poiltelysed are both built like chasers. He's A Hawker was the narrow paddock pick in what looks an open bunch.

14:00 Politelysed carries 1lb overweight in the opener

13:45 Apparently the judge for the best barbie is the Chairman of the British Barbecue Association - no I didn't know there was one either!!!

I have just bumped into Robert Cooper of ATR, here on his first visit, and he is smitten with the place . . . . I always say come to Cartmel once and you will return again.

13:21 We have just had our first race of the afternoon, the annual hobby horse race where three children from the local primary school take on three jockeys over half a furlong.

I hope the stewards look into the running of Denis O'Regan who had a very gentle ride.

13:06 My earlier, unofficial, going report is now confirmed, the official going is now Good to Firm, Good in places (8.1)

12:50 Lunch today is courtesy of local suppliers. A Cumberland Sausage Roll from the Cartmel Village Store and some home made cheese (garlic) from a Lakes Farm.

12:13 Most racecourses have competitions for the best dressed lady and all that jazz but here at Cartmel this afternoon the prizes are for best barbecue and best picnic.

12:04 The race reports this afternoon will probably be even vaguer than usual as viewing is not great here and the one area where it is possible to view racing is jealously guarded and the guardian does not deem me fit to be there.

11:59 Make that eight non-runners

11:53 There are currently seven non-runners

11:49 I have to admit Cartmel is a course I love visiting, the setting is wonderful although viewing is not brilliant.

Sill the only UK course with dry stone walls

11:32  Good morning from Cartmel where it is generally sunny although there are a few grey clouds around and I have to confess every time I have been to Cartmel it has rained at some point.

The official going remains Good, Good to Firm in places but having walked most of the course it feels more good to firm.

08:05 There has been no significant rain since the 8th July and the going is Good, Good to Firm in Places (Watered) with 10mm having been applied across the entire course yesterday.
