Racing Live - York 13th June 2009

17:42 That's it from York where 57,000 have had a good afternoon in the sun.

Some decent racing as well. No world beaters on display but good fare anyway.

From a warm Knavesmire a very good afternoon.

17:38 Well another big field, 19 runner, six furlong sprint for our finale and undoubtedly a great result for the bookmakers.

The 9/4 favourite Castles In The Air was unsighted and the handicapper must also be miffed as we had a clear winner.

That winner came in the shape of Dancing Maite, ridden by Dane O’Neill, who took up the running approaching the furlong marker and, once in front, was never in any danger coming home a three length winner.

Silver Wind, who produced his run the same time, but to less effect, took the runners-up spot, although less comfortably as Eastern Hills came within three parts of a length.

Fourth placed Green Park was very eye catching at 20/1 running on really well.

17:16 Just over 57,000 here this afternoon.

17:13 An update on Paul Hanagan, it loos as though I was premature in saying he is walking wounded. He has been taken to hospital to have his leg x-rayed.

An update on the bees - they have now been captured and taken away by a bee keeper.

17:11 You sometimes despair with this sport. Our sixth race a mile maiden stakes saw the biggest punt of the day with Catigo being well backed from 11/2 into 11/4, with Ryan Moore well backed to land a treble.

Unfortunately the filly refused to enter the stalls and was withdrawn, inflicting a 25p in the pound deduction on all winning bets.

Fernando Tores, the horse not the footballer, set the pace along with Brockfield and Mutawarath.

These three set the pace until well down the home straight, when the slow starting French Applause took up the running.

Mutawarath
set off in pursuit but it looked as though, once again, he wouldn’t see his effort through. However this time the penny dropped and under strong urging from Richard Hills he finally, at the third attempt, managed to get his head in front.

French Applause held on for second and Godolphin’s lean spell continued with the favourite Seaway a never nearer third.

The biggest cheer, albeit ironic, of the afternoon was saved for Ryan Moore on Catigo when the pair eventually cantered back past the stands.

16:51 No surprise Paul Hanagan does not ride in our next, his place on Evna is taken by Joe Fanning.

16:37 A very interesting 6f maiden for our fifth race.

First of all an incident before the race when William Morgan reared in the parade ring, giving his rider Paul Hanagan a kick for his troubles. He looked to be walking wounded after receiving treatment.

We also had a very warm favourite, Capacity, a half brother to last weeks Derby winner Sea The Stars. All that can be said about his run was it was very disappointing. Never in any real contention from the start, the writing was on the wall after two furlongs when he cam under pressure and it became clear he would never win.

Up front Makbullet was setting the pace under Paul Mulrennan. He was pursued by Haltela and approaching the furlong marker Neil Callan asked Haltela for an effort and he was soon in front.

Towards the stand side, hat trick seeking Ryan Moore was producing Summerinthecity and was making good progress. However he seemed to accept defeat in the final 50 yards and allowed Haltela to take the race by a length. It did not look good I have to admit.

The front running Makbullet held on for third, a further length back.

16:14 William Morgan is out of our next contest after rearing in the parade ring and kicking his jockey Paul Hanagan, who is now being treated by medics.

16:01 It is funny how fortune changes and a jockey can change from hero to villain so easily.  After winning two on the bound Ryan Moore was on the joint favourite Marching Time in this 1¼ mile handicap.

He somehow managed to find himself in all sorts of trouble trying to go for a gap that wasn’t there and losing any chance of winning the race in the process. Arguably the way he was running on he would have been in with a shout.

Tepmokea and Distant Memories set the pace, tracked by Union Island and Goliath’s Boy, with Atinori and the Godolphin runner, Sovereign Remedy tracking in fifth and sixth.

After the argy bargy Union Island was left in front with the challenge coming from Changing The Guard and it was a ding dong battle to the line with the lead changing hand several times.

In the end the 5lbs being received by up and coming apprentice Freddie  Tylicki proved to be decisive as he put Changing the Guard’s head in front where it mattered.

Antinori, who was involved in closing the door on Marching Time was running on well at the end to take third and the luckless Marching Time was fourth.

Goldolphin’s poor form continues and the other joint favourite Sovereign Remedy came home nowhere.

15:26 Well if Ryan Moore needs to warm up for Royal Ascot he is going about it the right way, two rides two wins.

It was a race in which the handicapper should be proud of himself. A level break (apart from the bottom weight Gone Hunting who fell out of the stalls , did not want to race and came home in his own time).

Even at the half way stage the field were well bunched, across the course and, frankly, anything that was good enough could have taken the contest.

Parisian Pyramid was the first to go for home, taking a good lead a furlong out. The only challenger to come after him was Moore on Swiss Diva, who had been covered up, before being taken to the far side and running on gamely. He took up the running in the final fifty yards, coming home 1¼ lengths ahead of Parisian Pyramid.

Favourite Girl got the better of Rowayton in a photograph for fourth.

The favourite, Master Of Disguise, stepping up to six had no excuses and obviously did not get the six.

The winner was David Elsworth's first Your winner since 2003.

14:53 Believe it or not we have another 20 runner handicap for race three, this time over six furlongs – commentator Simon Holt is earning his corn this afternoon.

14:51 A cracking little race in the end, with the late runners being involved in the finish.

Fanjura, Granston, Medici Pearl and Angel Rock were all to the fore but of those the last named came home best of all, in fifth place.

Inside the furlong four had a go for the line Acrostic, Albaqaa, Last Three Minutes and Kavachi.

Soon it was down to two as Kavachi had the advantage but was being harried by Albaqa, but had enough in hand to hold on by a neck, giving a victory to champion jockey Ryan Moore, riding for Dad Gary.

A further neck back in third was Last Three Minutes.

Kavachi has been cut to 20’s from 33’s for next weeks Royal Hunt Cup by Paddy Power.

14:29 Some non-racing excitement - we have a swarm of bees here and a bee keeper has been called to try and get rid of them - more updates when we have them.

14:28 Our second contest over almost 1m 1f is another handicap with experienced runners.

The only real negative in the parade ring was Mastership, who was very much on his toes and swishing his tail.

Red Jade was getting a little bit warm.

14:20 Well Katie Cooper is now the happy owner of five cases of bubbly - she can celebrate her first win in style.

14:17 Well I hope Katie Cooper likes champagne as she has won her weight in it. I have to say she deserves it with a perfectly timed run on Mull Of Dubai. To add some extra fizz to her prize this was her first ever win.

She was almost last turning for home before quietly making progress in the home straight and only hitting the front in the final yards, when it looked as though Serena Brotherton had done enough on Gifted Leader, another who had come from off the pace.

Indeed the only pacesetter to trouble the judge was Hillview Boy who led until approaching three out but managed to hold on for third spot.

Joint favourite Shady Gloom was plodding on one pace to take fourth, whilst the other joint, Taikoo was never sighted.

Grand Art missed the break really badly, setting off a good six or seven lengths behind the remainder but was another running on late.

14:54 A very tricky 19 runner lady jockeys handicap, over a mile and a half. All are experienced handicappers and all look good in the parade ring.

Lady Jockeys in the opener

This is one race where the winning jockey will not complain if they are heavy after the race as they win their weight in Champers.

York Course Enclosure

13:05 Looking around the place today I can only assume the Yorkshire ladies who cannot make it to Berkshire are having their ladies day today.

We still have an hour until our opener but the crowds are packing in.

12:25 Good afternoon from York where it is very warm and the weather is slightly overcast.

We currently have four non-runners.

10:46 It is a bright day here at York, where the going is Good, Good To Soft in Places.
