15:45 That's it from a pleasant afternoons racing here at Wetherby - from Yorkshire good afternoon.
15:39 And finally, we had a two mile hurdle, which produced a good finish to end the afternoon.
There were three non-runners, so only 11 faced the starter.
The first incident came at the fourth when the favourite, Knockavilla, fell at the fourth bringing down Soubriquet. An incident which will have hit Scoop6 punters.
Ele Re who went down last, and kept away from the others at the start, set the pace and led until approaching three out when Freeloader took up the running and looked a possible 33/1 winner.
Edas was also a challenger and European Dream was also running on well.
At the last Freeloader was still in the lead despite going through the top of the flight. Paddy Aspell however threw the kitchen sink at European Dream and he ran on well to take the race, with Freeloader second and Edas back in third.
15:08 After the long distance hurdle we then had a long distance chase, well 3m 1f anyway and it produced, arguably, the most exciting finish of the afternoon.
Daldini set the early pace for the first circuit but was tracked by Ice Tea, who took up the running on the final circuit, accompanied by Shrewed Investor.
Turning for home we had what looked a two horse race with Ice Tea and the grey Gold Heart having a good battle. However at the third out Gold Heart took a crashing fall (from both which horse and rider emerged unscathed)
It looked to be a cake walk for Ice Tea but Morgan Be was coming from the pack and was closing with every stride. Indeed he led into the last fence and came out ahead, but Brian Harding produced Ice Tea with final effort and he regained the lead to record a 3½ length victory.
Killard Point, who suffered some interference when Gold Heart fell, finished third.
14:37 A long distance hurdle for our fourth event – is it really only half-past-two and we have had four races already.
Let’s start with the jolly Guns And Butter. Well it touched third starting the final circuit but that was the best he achieved, eventually coming home sixth.
Kentucky Boy was to the fore throughout with Rimsky Korsakov. The latter tired to finish sixth, whilst the former finished a very tired second after seemingly taking a very wide route throughout.
By contrast the winner Dan Buoy looked to be pretty fresh running on at the end recording an easy 11 length victory.
There as a good battle for third place with Star Beat looking booked for the spot but Grande Monsieur rallied to collar him on the line. The third looked to be a challenger four out but then tired and looked well beaten before the rally.
13:58 Back to hurdles for our third contest and a two horse race according to the betting with Dzesmin and Drever Route fighting it out. The former going off the jolly.
Drever Route was prominent until turning for home for the final time where he dropped out like a stone, eventually finishing third last.
Dzesmin, by contrast, was settled mid-division before settling fourth starting the final circuit. Taking the lead three out, Border Reiver looked to be the only challenger but was never really a threat to the winner who ran out a comfortable two length victor. Terenzium ran in a similar manner to the runner-up , coming late, to take third place.
The only runner who failed to complete was Solar rock, pulled up before the sixth.
13:20 Our first chase of the afternoon saw a last minute defeat for the favourite Deuteronomy, who looked to be in with a good chance approaching the last but was headed by the dour running on Chigorin on the run in, although the favourite did not go down without a fight.
Eborarry was the hare in the race ,leading until three out and eventually finishing a tired third twelve lengths ahead of the front pair.
Chigorin’s win is even better when you consider he hit the fifth from home pretty hard.
Of the remaining runners nothing else really caught the eye.
12:50 Our second race was another 2 mile hurdle and this time the “excitement” came at the first hurdle.
Rub Of The Relic, making his racecourse debut did not seem to have a clue what to do and made absolutely no attempt to jump the first and applied the brakes, giving jockey Davey Condon no chance at all. It is a miracle he did not bring any other horses down.
Once the excitement was over Hellfire Bay and Lady Florence set the pace with Dancing Marabout
and favourite Theme Catcher tracking the pair.
As they turned for home these four were in the lead but Hellfire Bay was the first to crack leaving Lady Florence in the lead. However Them Catcher was looking menacing and the gelding closed on the leader approaching the last and was soon in the lead.
Jumping the last well the favourite ran away from the field to record a six length victory. Lady Florence took second, five lengths clear of Dancing Marabout.
In the auction there was no bit for the winner.
12:17 Well racing is underway nice and early and our first race, a 2mile Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle produced a good finish and in running backers burnt their fingers.
In a tight betting heat Smarties Party was just sent off favourite ahead of White Moss.
Smarties Party made her intentions clear from the start taken into the lead by Richard Mc Grath.
Turning for home she had a good eight to ten length lead on the field and it looked as though McGrath had stolen a march on his rivals.
Jenny Potts was the one coming from the pack after being held up but it looked as though she had far too much to do. The favourite was still eight lengths in front at the second last.
Jenny Potts was gaining on the leader approaching the last but the favourite still seemed to have plenty in hand. However Smarties Party got the last totally wrong and almost fell.
Jenny Potts needed no second chance and she ran on to claim a 2½ length victory.
White Moss ran on past tired horses to claim third place.
Petit Fleur fell after the fourth fence bringing down Gobejolly in the process. Both horses and riders were OK.
11:55 Another non-runner for you
11:10 Good morning from Wetherby where we have a bright morning and, touch wood, the first day without a strong wind.
The official going is Good To Soft, soft in places the going stick is 7.3.
We have just the one non-runner so far.
