Racing Live - Thirsk 30th June 2009

21:21 That’s it from Thirsk where we have had an iffy evening weather wise and a terrible evening tipping wise.

Having said that Thirsk is a course that grows on you.

In terms of tipping I think I missed a trick as there were a couple of annual members standing near to me during the racing who had a very successful evening indeed including 14/1 winner Not Now Lewis – perhaps I should have asked for their contact details and offered them a job.

Our Yorkshire trip continues tomorrow afternoon, when we will have live updates from Catterick.

Meanwhile from a still muggy Thirsk a very good evening.

21:16 Well about the only thing I managed to get right this evening was the negative view of Crimea – what a pity I tipped him this morning.

He really was in a state and was never going to win the contest and this was reflected in the betting as he drifted from 15/8 out to 11/4.

This five furlong contest seems destined for drama. I was last at Thirsk at this corresponding meeting last year and three runners were withdrawn from this equivalent race after playing up in the stalls.

A smaller field this year but still high drama as Stolt, who admittedly has previous, tried to break out of his stall and was well restrained by the stalls handlers.

Needless to say Stolt was withdrawn leaving a field of seven and that must have been galling for backers of third place Sudden Impact, the only filly in the field, who just lost out in a photograph for second place.

Victory went to the top weight Le Toreador who set off in front and, although the field bunched up at halfway, was effectively an all the way winner.

In the photograph for second place it was Medici Time who grabbed the honours.

20:57 Crimea was a big negative in the parade ring - whinnying and misbehaving

20:49 The result of the previous race stands.

20:43 Our biggest field of the evening saw sixteen go to post for another mile handicap.

A funny sort of race which saw the field reasonably well strung out by halfway, yet the finish was something of a heap with Not Now Lewis getting the better of Sion Hill in a photograph, with Astroangel and Fyodorovich filling the minor places.

The early front runners Miss Ferney and Bently paid the price for their exertions and finished without troubling the judge.

Crux was pulled-up having bled.

There was a bit of a coming together in the closing stages, which the Stewards are taking a look at.

20:14 Well Frankie’s trip to Yorkshire proved to be worthwhile but I imagine he found it much harder work than he initially envisaged.

As expected Mark Johnston’s Fesko set the pace in this mile handicap.

Johnmanderville and Yirga tracked with the other pair never in contention.

Two out there was little change in the lead with Fesko still leading and Johnmanderville looking the likely challenger as Frankie had to get low on the favourite.

A furlong out and the three protagonists were line abreast and Fesko was the first to blink.

Under a strong Dettori drive Yirga managed to get his head in front but under strong urgings from Andrew Elliot Johnmanderville fought back, looking at one point as though there would be an upset.

However Yirga was kept to the task and had his neck in front on the line.

Johnmanderville, in taking the runners-up spot, lost absolutely nothing in defeat.

Fesko came home third with the others finishing in their own time.

19:54 There is absolutely no doubt that Yirga is the pick of the paddock - by miles. But what about the recent Godolphin form?

19:42 For the first time in a while we have a runner for the notebook.

The betting had this as a two horse contest and so it proved to be with the sweating Ballodair battling it out to the line with the Mark Johnston newcomer, Call To Arms.

Johnston’s newcomers often need the run and Call To Arms showed enough fortitude to suggest he will be a future winner and will come home in front sometime in future.

Ballodair
battled well to hold off the challenge and deserved to win the contest, having taken the lead after the first furlong.

Mister Clarets got the best of a bunch finish, albeit five lengths behind the front pair.

Mad Millie was reluctant to post and not that impressive coming back and Go Win Girl came home virtually pulled up.

18:56 Ballodair is getting very warm in the parade ring, ahead of our second, six furlong, contest.

18:47 It is raining again and there is the rumble of thunder in the distance.

18:45 The opening contest may have been over two miles, however that does mot mean we did not have a thrilling finish.

It was one of those races where little happened for most of the race.

Patavium headed the field at a steady pace with the remainder following in Indian file. Waterloo Corner, Terenzium, Graze on And On and last years runner up Park’s Prodigy made sure the leader had company.

The favourite, Jackday, settled behind the leading group.

The action started about two out as the field bunched and Jackday was produced with a run against the inside rail and looked to be the winner.

However Spiders Star was launched with an aggressive run in the centre of the course and what looked as though it was going to be an easy victory for the jolly turned out to be a bobbing finish, with Spiders Star getting up to deny favourite backers.

Waterloo Road plugged on to take third spot.

18:22 The runners are in the parade ring for our opening contest, a 2m handicap.

Considering how warm and muggy it is, the runners do not look too bad.

Lady Anne Nevill was pulling a bit and Able Dara was slightly on his toes. Other than that, not really much to report from the paddock either way.

17:52 Highlight of the night must be the 8:00 where Frankie Dettori is here for just the one ride on Yirga - a very rare visit to Thirsk for the former champion.

17:33 The rain did not last long but we do have another non-runner, Riverside is out of the 8:30, lame with a self sertificate.

17:26 Once again my weather forecasting skills have been ridiculed – it has just started raining  - nothing significant but wet stuff all the same.

16:44 The gates have opened and the sun is breaking through. A crowd of about 3,000 is expected this evening.

15:06 Good afternoon from Thirsk, where the weather is a little bit overcast but warm - the temperature is 22 at the moment.

The weather has resulted in the ground drying slightly and the official going is now Good, Good to Firm in places
