16:16 That’s it from a well subscribed jumps fixture at Southwell, from Southwell good evening.
16:14 The eighth bumper to be run as Southwell in the last week went to in form Keith Reveley with his debutant Silvers Spirit.
The winner was held up for most of the contest before making progress about five furlongs out.
Turning for home Paul Webbers Osmosia had the advantage but Silvers Spirit was soon on her quarters.
Hitting the front it should have been easy but Osmosia was a fighter and Silvers Spirit was all out to take the prize.
The favourite Alfie’s Pearl ran a strange race, running in snatches and Adam Pogson had his work cut out trying to control the mare. Taking a very strong hold early on the exertions may have taken their toll late on was she tired and although coming home third, she was eight lengths behind the front pair.
15:55 Just the bumper to go, the Southwell Mares Maiden Open NH Flat Race.
We finally have a paddock pick and that is Swell The Chorus who looks very nice.
15:48 A comfortable winner in our final contest over obstacles as Have You Seen Me shows a clean pair of hooves to come home six clear of closest rival King Mak who was a further eight clear of third placed Comehomequietly.
Fongoli and Quinte du Chatelet set the pace but both dropped out going out on the final circuit.
Favourite Mount Helicon was very disappointing and only managed to finish seventh, despite being handy for most of the contest.
15:21 A 3 mile contest which seemed to go on and on at the tight Southwell course.
A race with no less than five greys and one of them, the outsider Slotovik, set the pace and did his very best to make all, only dropping out of contention at the second last.
Once he lost the lead it became a two runner contest between Dan Buoy who came from absolutely nowhere and Tarateeno, who had been tracking the leaders.
Dan Buoy knows Southwell very well but more usually on the adjacent Fibresand surface. However once he it the front coming to the last you had a feeling he was not going to be headed.
Tarateeno made a good fist of making a contest of it but could only get to within 1½ lengths of the winner.
The favourite Ragamuffin Man had been settled in rear for most of the contest before making steady progress in the final mile.
He came home a never nearer third but nine lengths behind the front pair.
14:56 Our longest race of the afternoon with the extended 3m Play Golf At Southwell Golf Club Handicap Hurdle.
No positives in the parade ring but a couple, Kings Rock and Mocho were pulling hard. Stick Together was gnashing her teeth and Ragamuffin Man was on his toes.
14:46 Like the first division the second division pointers came from the betting ring with the top two in the betting, Tocca Ferro and Tanto Faz, battling out the finish well clear of their rivals.
Unlike the first division it was the favourite who prevailed as Tocca Ferro came home half a length clear of his rival.
Indeed the pair had almost been joined at the hip throughout the race, tracking around together behind the leaders who were Rocky River, Another Dark Rum and Sitwell.
As the field turned for home the top two in the betting joined Rocky River in front and a tactical battle ensued . They pulled well clear after the second last with the favourite always looking to have the measure of his rival.
Outsider Born Again made late progress to come home third at 50/1 albeit 11 lengths behind the front pair.
14:24 Division two of the Novices’ Hurdle next and another maximum field, let’s hope this is more competitive.
14:22 Paul Callaghan has just been taken to hospital for some x-rays, the good news being he walked into the ambulance, his arm in a sling so could be a shoulder or collarbone.
14:18 This contest went with the betting with the favourite Moonstreaker, as usual, setting the pace. Second favourite Tzora tracked along with third favourite Gifted Leader.
These three were to the van throughout and were going to be the only three contesting the race.
Tzora briefly hit the front as they turned for home but Moonstreaker was soon in front again and that was the end of Tzora’s challenge .
Gifted Leader was soon in second and not long after was challenging for the lead.
Coming to the last Gifted Leader was on Moonstreakers quarters and led coming out of the flight.
On the run-in Moonstreaker responded to Adam Pogson’s urgings and manage to get his head in front again but Sam Thomas wasn’t going to give up on Gifted Leader and with one last effort was back in front where it mattered, recording a ¾ length victory.
Tzora was 13 lengths back in third.
13:54 Next up is division one the Southwell Novices’ Hurdle over two miles with a maximum field of 14 going to post.
13:50 Something of a scrappy race for our second.
Alfloramoor and the favourite Aplha Way set the early pace, soon joined by Bold Pioneer.
Lindseyfield Lodge fell at the third interfering with several runners with Troodos Jet being badly interfered with.
Going out on the final circuit Bold Pioneer and Alfloramoor were still to the van, whilst Alpha Way was in reverse.
By the time they reached the end of the back straight for the final time it was all change with Kinkeel and Troodos Jet both having made late progress to take up the running and set off for home well clear.
In the home straight it was Kinkeel who dominated and by two out, barring a fall, it was race over.
There were no jumping errors and Kinkeel came home ten clear of Troodos Jet, who did well to finish second bearing in mind the earlier interference.
Alfloramoor plugged on one pace to come home six lengths further back in third.
Satindra made some late progress to finish fourth.
Paul Callaghan the jockey of Lindseyfield Lodge was treated on the ground for some time and is currently being treated in the medical room.
13:25 Race two is the two mile Southwell Golf Club Junior Members Handicap Chase in which 14 face the starter.
13:18 We have a going change where it is now Good to Soft, Soft in Places
13:17 Favourite backers were smiling after the opener as Venetia Williams Noun De La Thinte took the prize although they may have been in a cold sweat at the last when 50/1 outsider Ouste looked as though he was going to upset the odds.
The favourite was to the fore throughout, sharing the lead with Jump Jet in the early stages with the well supported Or d’Oudairies tracking the front pair.
The field were well bunched for most of the contest and even turning for home there were many in with chances.
In the home straight the field began to string out with Noun De La Thinte and Ouste going clear of their rivals, with Heavenly Chorus challenging No Panic for minor honours.
Even coming to the last the front pair were locked together and an upset looked to be on the cards.
However on the short run in the favourite was pushed on by Sam Thomas to record a 1¾ length victory.
No Panic got the batter of the battle for third.
12:50 The runners for our opening contest the extended 2½ mile Southwell-racecourse.co.uk Handicap Chase are in the parade ring.
Thirteen face the starter and no real positives in the parade ring. A few negatives though.
Polar Gunner, despite the cool breeze is getting warm. Supreme Duke and Silmi are slightly on their toes, whilst Whimper is very much on his toes.
Ouste has two handlers and is not in a happy mood grinding his teeth like a mill.
12:10 The fog is clearing nicely now with most of the course now visible from the stands - commentator Iain MacKenzie will be breathing a sigh of relief.
11:35 Good morning from a foggy Southwell where we can barely see the final fence, although visibility is aparently improving.
We have no non-runners and no jockey changes
