Racing Live - Sandown 21st July 2010

21:09 That’s it from Sandown where the band is playing and, sorry lads, I don’t like your music.

21:07
A postscript to race five and Jimmy Fortune picked up a four day careless riding ban for his ride on Tartan Trip and Neil Callan on the runner-up picked up two days.

21:04
No controversial finish to our final race as Blazing Desert comes late to hit the front inside the final furlong, recording a 1¾ length victory.

Tilos Gem, the favourite, and Lastroseofsummer set the pace, with Bon Spiel and Blazing Desert in second rank.

Turning for home Lastroseofsummer had the advantage with Tilos Gem in second and Blazing Desert making eye catching progress into third.

Two out the favourite ws under pressure and beaten and it was to be a battle between Lastroseofsummer and Blazing Desert, with the latter easing into the lead inside as they passed the furlong pole.

Outland came with a late rattle to grab second spot, with Lastroseofsummer coming home third.

20:39 Our final contest is our longest of the evening, the 1m 6f Don’t Lose Your Bottle Brothers Cider Handicap, with six going to post.

20:33 The result stands, we will bring you the result of the Stewards as soon as we receive it.

20:32 A controversial finish to our penultimate race.

Circus Girl and Tartan Trip had set the pace, leading until approaching a furlong out where the former dropped out and the latter ran on to take the lead.

Prince Of Thebes then came with a run against the inside rail and it was here the controversy happened.

Jimmy Fortune on Tartan Trip had been running straight and he had been riding hands and heels. He then pulled the whip through to his left hand and started stoking Tartan Trip up. His mount responded and started drifting to the right.

Fortune should have pulled his whip through to his right hand but he didn’t and the final backhander he delivered cannoned his mount into Prince Of Thebes, who stopped running briefly.

Joint favourite Tartan Trip went on to pass the line half a length clear but almost immediately the klaxon for a Stewards Inquiry sounded.

Prince of Thebes recovered to finish second, half a length behind Tartan Trip.

Joint favourite Squall came home third.

20:05 This evening is flying by and we are already fast approaching out penultimate contest. The Devine Homes 25th Anniversary Handicap is a one mile contest in which seven compete for the £3,886 first prize.

The only comment from the parade ring concerns Circus Girl who is a little bit on her toes.

19:57 Two seven furlong contests and two all the way winners, with Kakatosi under Jimmy Fortune making all and holding off the late challenge of Ertikaan by a length.

Indeed these two filled the first two places throughout the contest and no other runner looked to have any chance.

Ertikaan did mount a serious challenge and although getting upsides at one point Kakatosi was not going to let his rival pass.

The only filly in the contest, Fleeting Echo, led the remainder home, albeit four lengths behind the front pair.

Favourite Sailorman was terribly disappointing, settled mid-division Frankie Dettori asked for an effort as they lined up for home but instead of making progress he went in reverse, eventually beating only Dubai Set home. The latter never being in the race and always viewing his backsides rivals.

19:39 There is a crowd of about 9,500 here this evening, some of them to watch the racing.

9,500 Crowd at Sandown

19:33 Our second seven furlong contest is the Maureen Sturt & The Children’s Trust Handicap with eight facing the starter.

Nothing of any note to report from the parade ring.

19:26 A cracking finish to our third contest.

Star SurpriseStar Surprise under Jamie Spencer set out to make the pace, with Enlightening settled in second spot.

The latter named dropped out tamely as they turned for home leaving Star Surprise clear.

Favourite and seemingly the Godolphin second string, Baransky, had been in third for most of the contest before running on to challenge the long time leader inside the final two furlongs.

It looked as though the favourite was going to prevail but Star Surprise was nothing if not brave and he fought back to re-establish his lead.

Johnny Castle had been settled for most of the contest but was launched with a late run by Richard Hills. He was closing fast on the long time leader and was a fast diminishing neck behind Star Surprise when the line came.

The favourite Baransky held on for third prize money.

The Godolphin first string, Bawaab, was disappointing and was dismounted by Frankie Dettori after the finish.

19:02 Race three is our biggest field of the evening as 12 line up for the Devine Homes EBF Maiden Stakes,  a two-year-old contest and the first of two over seven furlongs.

Two jockey changes, Johnny Castle is now ridden by Richard Hills and Maratib by Dane O’Neill.

Cuban Piece was whinnying in the parade ring, as was El Maachi, the pair of them being amongst the eight debutants in the field.

Baransky, Bawaab and Kinyras all caught the eye.

18:48 With only six runners the draw wasn’t going to have a significant impact in this contest.

Krypton Factor Ahtouh and Master Macho were best away, with Krypton Factor being far from super missing the break.

Approaching half way Krypton Factor was with the front pair the three of them difficult to separate.

Mister Macho was checked around half way leaving it as a two way go up front.

Inside two out Steve Donohoe kicked Krypton Factor on and they soon had a good lead.

Ryan Moore then asked the favourite, Swiss Dream, for an effort and they began to close on the leader. However Krypton Factor had stolen enough of a lead to come home a comfortable 1½ lengths clear of the jolly.

18:34 Race two is our only sprint of the evening, the 5f Absolute Radio Nursery, another six runner contest.

Rosina Grey was the nicest looking, despite being on her toes in the parade ring.

18:20 A steadily run contest with Sinchiroka and the favourite Dream Win setting the pace. The Hague and Mons Calpe were next rank followed, with Baylini in rear of eth main group and Piccolo Mondo well tailed off from early on.

Turning for home Dream Win had an unopposed lead with Baylini making progress through the field to challenge.

A furlong out it was a two runner contest with Dream Win just holding the lead but Baylini, under Sophie Doyle, slowly closing.

In the final half furlong Baylini eased ahead and Dream Win was unable to respond, with the grey coming home half a length clear.

The front pair were seven lengths clear of their rivals with The Hague the best of the rest.

17:59 Just six line up for our opener, the Thames Ditton Apprentice Handicap.

The Hague, currently joint favourite, is very late into the parade ring.

Baylini, the grey, was on her toes, reluctant to come into the parade ring and going to post early.

Picco Mondo was pulling slightly.

17:37 Another going change, albeit a minor one, it is now Good to Firm, Firm in Places.

16:40 A food update and a great selection of food here – I have opted for a lamb curry and it is absolutely ace.

16:15 Good afternoon from Sandown Park where the sun is shining and with a massive stage in front of the stands one can be forgiven for thinking one has arrived at a pop concert. Well In a way one has as Razorlight are performing who, as I said earlier, are totally new to me. Richard Hoiles has just patiently told me they are one of the better bands to be seen performing at a racecourse this year and they are apparently, some sort if indi combo.

Oh well one advantage of a post racing concert is it will make for an easy escape after racing.

Epsom have a concert tomorrow night, from a group I have heard of, with JLS performing and they are almost completely sold out with the only spaces available being in the Longsdale enclosure.

I am not sure if these concerts at racing are a good idea or not. Yes it gets bums on seats but how many are interested in the racing and how many will come back.

Indeed these concerts may well put off genuine racegoers. Here at Sandown tonight the admission is £30 and £35 respectively and, frankly, just for the racing, it ain’t worth paying that amount.

12:45 The non-runner count is slowly creeping up, now eight absentees, six as a result of the going change.

10:37 The non-runner count reaches six.

More importantly there is a going change:-

Round Course - Good to Firm, Firm in Places in the back straight
Sprint Course - Good to Firm, Firm in Places

(GoingStick: Round - 8.8 Sprint - 8.9 on Wednesday at 10:00)

09:40 Three more non-runners, all due to the going - details on the right.

07:53 It has been a dry night at the Surrey course and the going remains Good to Firm.

Parts of the course will be watered this morning, 5mm on the sprint course and 3mm on the home straight, ahead of racing which is set to commence at 18:05.

A big crowd is expected this evening as chart topping group Razorlight (who I have never heard of) are performing after racing.

There is currently one non-runner.
