Racing Live - Sandown 5th December 2008

16:00 That's it from day one of the Tingle Creek meeting. Tomorrow is the big race where we have Tidal Bay up against Master Minded in teh big one (plus five others, of course)

We will be back here with live coverage until tomorrow good night.

15:51 A strong favourite in our finale, a two mile Handicap Hurdle, in the shape of Buffalo Bob backed in from 5/1 to 100/30. It also saw the largest field of the day with 13 runners.

Running in second for most of the race, he faded to finish well down the field when the race proper started in the home straight.

The front runner had been Rockiteer however, like the favourite, he dropped out in the home straight.

This turned out to be a race for running-on horses with a three way go for the finish.

In the end Kadouchski, who had been settled mid-division throughout, ran on best of all to beat Spartan Place (who had tracked the leaders throughout before running on)  by a length with Karky Schultz, who had been running with the winner a further ¾ of a length back in third place.

A cracking finish to a good race and a good finish to the opening day of the meeting.

15:19 Another extended three mile chase for our fifth race in a race where we had three non-runners, leaving six to face the starter.

River Indus
put in a bold front running performance to take the race by five lengths. The winner was joined briefly by Jim Bob’s Girl as they completed the first circuit, however he soon re-established the lead and was never headed.

Favourite, Jim Bob’s Girl, managed to retain second place with Pass me A Dime back in third.

In Accord to a heavy fall at the 18th.

14:47 Another interesting contest, a three mile “Future Stars” chase with some familiar names including Ornais, Barbers Shop and Roll Along.

It was Battlecry and Ornais who shared the early pace before Ornais was quickly pulled up by Sam Thomas before the 18th. (The vet applied a splint to his off fore and he was taken away in the horse ambulance).

It was one of those races where the runners swapped places many times.

At the business end Roll Along looked to be the first to be in trouble with Timmy Murphy taking a wide course, presumably to find the better ground. Although he did rally late on.

Battlecry lived up to his name but was headed by Barbers Shop, in the Royal colours, as they approached the last.

Battlecry had no more to give but, Abbeybraney did run on well to challenge the leader but Barbers Shop came home a comfortable 3¾ length winner.

14:09 Well it is turning into quite a good afternoon after the disappointing first and it also saw an end to the punters run of luck.

Race three was a 2½ mile hurdle in which On Raglan Road was sent off the odds-on favourite but had to settle for second best when turned over by the second favourite Junior.

It has to be said the favourites jumping wasn’t brilliant but that is no excuse as he had every chance and was beaten by a better horse.

The initial pace was set by Ogee and Fair Point, with the favourite tracking the two leaders along with Grizebeck  and the eventual winner in the third pair with Mr Gardner and Tullamore Dew the whipper in.

As they turned for home Ogee had been left in the lead but the favourite was on his quarters and at the second last he was in the lead under Jimmy McCarthy and looking very much the winner, especially as Ogee was starting to tire.

Robert Thornton, though, was getting to work on Junior and he responded well and soon in the lead, showing a clean pair of hoofs to the jolly.

Ogee did hang on for third but 11 lengths behind the front pair.

13:35 Well the second race not only made up for the first it paid back with some interest.

A ten runner, extended, 2m 4f chase and drama came right at the beginning.

At the first fence we lost both Presentandcorrect and Keepitsecret, whilst at the second we lost High Bird Humphrey.  Losing 30% of the field at the first two fences is one heck of a start.

All three fallers, and their riders, were unscathed and they were the only casualties.
Cape Greko set the early pace, once things had settled down and retained the lead until the ninth, when Orphelin Collonges took up the running.

The favourite Rustarix tracked the leader, never allowing him to build too much of a lead.

As they turned for home Orphelin Collonges and Rustarix shared the lead with Cape Greko and Creinch (who was under pressure down the back straight) snapping at their heels.

At the Pond fence the favourite jumped into the lead and Orphelin Collonges quickly went into reverse, with both Creinch and Cape Greko rallying.

Rallying even more eye catchingly though was By George who had been settled in the rear.

Rustarix and Creinch jumped the last in unison and they battled up the run-in, seemingly conjoined, with By George gaining with every stride.

The pair crossed the line together and Di Clarke had to turn to the camera to give a short head verdict to the favourite. With the running-on By George a further 1¼ lengths back in third.

As I said a complete contrast to the first and a demonstration of what jump racing is all about for what is a very good Friday crowd.

12:57 The opening race, although to call it a race is possibly stretching credulity, was a five runner affair and at no point was it ever competitive.

Helium
was sent off the odds-on favourite and was never headed, indeed he was never even challenged at any point and the seven length margin of victory doesn’t even tell the full story as he was heavily eased by Liam Treadwell on the run-in.

Second favourite Tuanku took the runners-up spot but never looked a danger and Highland Homestead came home 28 lengths further back in third.

The remaining pair of Drum Major and debutant King Olav, were well tailed off with the former pulling up before the last.

For the winner it was job done, as a spectacle not much to write home about. Even course commentator Ian Bartlett was struggling to make the procession sound interesting – perhaps he should have inhaled some helium to liven things up?

Hopefully things will get better.

11:44 Good morning from Sandown Park where we have a sunny but slightly chilly day for the opening day of the Tingle Creek meeting. Although I must admit it is not as cold as recent days.

The going is Good To Soft, Soft in Places on the chase course and Soft, Good To Soft in Places on the hurdle course.

There are currently four non-runners, unfortunately three of them are in one race.
