Racing Live - Salisbury 14th June 2009

17:11 That’s it from a gloriously sunny afternoon here at Salisbury. Some exciting finishes as well.

Our next coverage will be from the Royal meeting at Ascot, where we will be for all five days.

From the heart of Wiltshire a very good afternoon.

17:09 Some reports from the Stewards Room.

In the second Esteem Machine was reported lame by the vet.

In the 3:40 both Steve Drowne and Dane O’Neill picked up bans for careless riding. Both received one day, but O’Neill had an extra three days added as he already had a deferred ban.

17:06 Right, lets begin by getting the rant out of the way.

Some moron standing on the rail just short of the finishing line decided to throw their Racing Post in the air so it blew all over the course, more importantly right in front of the runners as they battled out the finish.

It is more luck than anything else that we did not have a serious accident. Unfortunately the stewards did not catch the culprit, who in my view, should be banned from racecourses for life.

Now I have that off my chest lets get down to the race, which turned out to be an easy one for the judge as it turned into a procession, albeit with a very impressive winner.  All the more so when you consider the winner missed the break and hit trouble in running.

The pace was set by Suakin Dancer and Saunton Sands.

By half way Suakin Dancer still had the lead with Bounty Reef, the favourite Broughtons Paradis and the heavily sweating Jachol chasing.

Suakin Dancer soon faded and Broughtons Paradis and Jachol were battling it out for the lead.

However Miss Mojito, after hitting trouble, ran on really strongly under substitute jockey Kieran Fox, eventually winning by four lengths.

The sweaty Jachol took the runners-up spot with the favourite Broughtons Paradis a further five back in third.

16:27 Who would be a judge – once again he was called into action for another close finish.

This time two 12/1 shots in a race where the favourite, Fly By Nelly, was most disappointing finishing next to last after challenging two out.

On this occasion it was the two front runners who battled all the way to the line. Ken’s Girl had led from the stalls but Miss Mujanna has always kept the leader in her sights and inside the final furlong the pair had taken the sting out of their rivals and settled down to battle out the finish.

In the end it was Miss Mujanna, under Monsieur Guillambert who prevailed, taking the race by a head in a bobbing finish.

Happy Forever was the best of the running on contenders, holding off an even later challenge from Support Fund.

16:06 Another fillies contest for our next and this one over seven furlongs. Quite a few of them are getting warm, none more so than Deyas Dream who looks wholly unhappy with her lot.

15:52 Well the closest finish of the afternoon so far and a shock result as the odds-on favourite loses out by the shortest possible distance.

Diana’s Choice reared as she came out of the stalls but was soon in front and setting a fair pace.
Carcinetto was with her whilst the favourite, Palace Moon, tracked the front pair.

Two out Steve Drowne asked Palace Moon for an effort and he was soon in front, Diana’s Choice tried to respond but was unable to do so.

Judd Street, by contrast, did respond when asked for an effort by Dane O’Neill. Edging in front half a furlong from home.

Palace Moon responded and it was nip and tuck to the line.

After what seemed a very long wait Felix Wheeler announced Judd Street the winner by a nose.

15:30 Our feature contest next the six furlong, Listed, Bathwick Tyres Cathedral Stakes.

Five of the six  look good in the parade ring, the exception being Palace Moon who is getting very warm indeed and is fighting his two handlers. Interestingly Palace Moon happens to be the odds-on favourite.

The interesting contender is Mike De Kock’s Diana’s Choice.

15:17 If you want a graphic example of the problems being faced by Godolphin this race exemplifies it.

A Class 5 maiden, with their runner, Silk Trail, sent off favourite yet they only manage third place and one of the horses in front was a 50/1 shot.

Silk Trail was with the pace from flag fall, along with Rock Art, who held the advantage for most of the contest.

Silk Trail did edge in front two out but was soon running flat out under Dane O’Neill.

It was time for the late finishers to mount their challenges and the first to do so was the 50/1 shot Levitation, who certainly looked better than the jolly.

However coming from the pack at an even greater rate of knots was Mrs Beeton who cooked up a recipe to defeat her rivals, coming home half a length clear of her rivals, battering them into submission.

15:56 A mile three year old maiden fillies contest for our third contest.

Actually for a ring full of 14 fillies they were quite well behaved. A couple are getting warm, but it is a warm afternoon. The big negative for me was Rock Art who was getting really worked up.

14:46 Well it looks as though we are in for an afternoon of exciting finishes here at Salisbury.

Our second contest, a 5f handicap, produced another cracker and one that kept the judge, Felix Wheeler, busy.

Cape Royal set off in front, at a decent pace, which is more than can be said about the favourite Ivory Silk who fell out of the stalls, took a strong hold under Steve Drowne and even stumbled after a furlong.

Meanwhile up front Victorian Bounty was tracking the leader, along with Canadian Danehill and The Jobber.

By two out Victorian Bounty had taken up the running, with Cape Royal and The Jobber still in pursuit.

A furlong out it looked to be a two horse race as The Jobber had taken up the running with Cape Royal trying to peg him back, the pair having a good lead on their rivals.

However in the centre of the course Steve Drowne had finally engaged the favourite and she came out of the pack as if someone has tied a rocket to her.

The front three passed the line in a heap but after consulting the photograph the judge decided The Jobber had just held on, with Ivory Silk taking second and Cape Royal third.

With a better start it is not beyond the realms of possibility we would have seen a victory for the favourite.

Hard luck story of the race must be Dazed And Amazed, another tardy starter but he met trouble in running when asked for an effort.

14:15 Who says you need big fields to have an exciting race. Only four went to post for the 1m 4f contest but we were treated to a cracking finish.

It has to be said most of the contest was uneventful, with the field in Indian file, headed by It’s A Date, then King Supreme, Sharpazmax and Outlandish.

Even the pace was not too great.
Three out It’s A Date cranked up the pace and had his rivals in trouble. Indeed it was the outsider Outlandish who emerged as the challenger.

Two out it looked as though an upset was on the cards as Outlandish narrowly edged ahead. Dane O’Neill had to get to work on It’s A Date and he ran on again in the closing stages to come home by a neck.

The other pair came in five lengths behind the front two, with King Supreme, who did not respond to pressure, edging out Sharpazmax by a neck.

13:48 The four runners look OK physically but Sharpazmax was very much on his toes and bucking in the pre-parade ring.

King Supreme was beginning to sweat up.

13:34 As expected a very good crowd on a lovely sunny afternoon.

Unfortunately two non-runners in our opener means only four go to post. I will pop down to the parade ring shortly to take a look at them and let you know what I see.

12:45 Good afternoon from a sunny Salisbury, where it looks as though we are going to have a bumper crowd.

We do, however, have lots of non-runners - details on the right.

09:01 I spoke too soon, another two non-runners have come through.

08:47 There has been 1mm of rain overnight and this has, surprisingly, led to an easing of the going where it is now Good to Firm, Good in places.

We currently have just the one non-runner.
