It was a smaller crowd than would have expected for an evening meeting at Salisbury, perhaps the drizzle in the air had something to do with it.

A controversial start to the first race as the starter sent the field off three minutes early. The Stewards held an inquiry and referred the matter to the BHA.

Although there was no official comment available the feeling is the early start was the result of well behaved runners. The starter began the loading process for the 16 runner handicap in plenty of time to allow the runners to be in position for the 6:10 start. Unusually not a single runner played up and they all walked in with no problem and consequently loading was completed early.

The race itself was one of those where it was impossible to call the result until well inside the final furlong.

Amy Ryan on Charlie Delta made a decisive run inside the final furlong, chased home by Angharad Frieze on Exit Strategy.

Judge Di Clarke was called into early action to decide 3rd and 4th places with the decision going to Over To You Bert and Binnion Bay respectively.

The favourite, Vanadium, a course winner over seven furlongs last time out, was never really in the race.

Excitement before the second race came in the shape of Richard Thomas being unshipped from Captain Kallis on the way to the start. Emerging from the parade ring somewhat rapidly the mount almost ran into the back of some other runners and jinked throwing off his jockey. Luckily the riderless horse was happy to canter down to the start with the others and was easily captured.

Tishtar was a very well backed favourite, available at 6/4 in the opening exchanges before being sent of at 8/11. It was easy to see why he was so well supported as he hacked up in the manner expected of a short priced favourite.

Richard Hughes took the lead from the off, setting a reasonable pace in the process.

The other well backed runner Finnegan McCool, who looked anything but cool in the parade ring, tracked the leader before fading a furlong out.

The runner-up Klynch only managed second due to the very strong urgings of pilot Robert Havlin.

In all honesty not the most inspirational race.

The pre-race excitement in the third came, once again, as the runners were going down.  This time Gallantry bumped into the running rail, forcing Tolley Dean to bale out. Luckily the jockey kept hold of the reigns and the pair were able to walk to the start.

For a field consisting of several known front runners the pace of the race was surprisingly slow.

China Cherub and Stamford Blue set the pace and looked to have the race sewn up.

Seamus Shindig, owned and trained by Henry Candy and ridden by Amy Scott, who really gets on with the horse, came from virtually nowhere with a flying run to claim victory in the dying strides.

Race four was the longest race of the evening and nothing untoward happened before this one.

Zen Factor, under Vince Slattery, set the early pace tracked by two of the three greys Leitmotif and Any Given Day.

As they passed the intersection Any Given Day was pushed into the lead by Richard Mullen, pursued by King Of Pentacles.

Any Given Day who had seemed to be a handful relaxed notably once in front, slowing increasing his lead as the race progressed. Indeed the result was never really in doubt once inside the final half furlong.

King Of Pentacles looked booked for second King Supreme under Richard Hughes emerged from the pack to deny him on the line.

It was a long wait but race five produced by far the most impressive winner of the evening in the shape of Dubai Power in the 6f Fillies Stakes.

Trained by Clive Brittain and ridden by 5lb claimer Ahmed Ajtebi, the daughter of Cadeaux Genereux tracked the initial pace but was soon in the lead and never looked to be in any real danger. It was little surprise she was sent off the well backed joint favourite.

The other joint favourite, Orange Pip, by contrast looked to be a right madam with Richard Hughes having to throw everything bar the kitchen sink to get his mount to respond. Once she got the message she ran on to take second place.

By the last conditions were quite murky and binoculars were next to useless. In truth it was a disappointing start with several playing up on the way to the start and the race itself being run at an uneven pace.

Consequently the spoils went to a hold up horse in the shape of Mon Plaisir under Ted Durkan. Happy to sit behind he made progress two furlongs out taking the lead in the final 100 yards of the race. Mizooka, under Seb Sanders, was the one denied the spoils and once headed the filly had nothing more to give.

Disappointment of the race, indeed the entire evening, was the odds on favourite Sleepy Hollow who was never in contention, eventually finishing a tailed off last. There was clearly something wrong with the horse and his jockey Steve Drowne reported the gelding just suddenly stopped.
