Racing Live - Redcar 3rd September 2009

17:38 That’s it from a windy Redcar. Some large fields this afternoon, although the racing was not as competitive as it looked to be on paper.

From the North East a very good evening.

17:33 Our biggest field of the afternoon for the finale as 19 runners faced the starter in a seven furlong handicap.

It looked to be another good result for the handicapper as barely a couple of lengths separated half the field with two furlongs to go.

Micky Mac and Smalljohn were both prominent early doors, with the favourite Silly Gilly needing to get stoked up.

Two out Carnivore was asked for an effort and he got his head, then body in front.

Silly Gilly, having eventually got going, set off in pursuit  but it was too late and the favourite was even denied the runners-up spot by the fast finishing Viva Volta.

Finsbury, whose head was cocked well to the right, took fourth spot.

17:05 Our longest contest of the afternoon, a 1m 6f handicap and also the only contest on the round course.

Golden Jess set the pace and soon had a clear lead as they turned into the back straight. Second rank was contested by Master Nimbus and Blue Jet, with Zefooha tracking.

Flora’s Pride, the favourite Outland,  Fenners, Cripsey Brook and Fistral were in the main group.

There was little change in the order until the home straight, at which point the leaders bunched up.

Zefooha briefly hit the front two out but was soon headed by Outland, who seemed to have made a winning run. Fenners was also coming strongly to join the fight.

However running on best of all was Simple Jim, who had been in the rear for most of the contest and he came with a well timed run to head the favourite on the line.

Fenners took third spot, whist Zefooha was a labouring fourth.

16:27 Back to six furlongs for our fifth, a maiden stakes.

A two horse contest according to the betting with Miss Frangipane sent off the 5/4 favourite and Equinine the 11/4 second favourite.

The betting was right as the top two in the betting were the only ones in contention at the finish, the only surprise being the finishing order did not reflect the betting.

Equinine took up the running from Halcyon Dancer at the half way point and was soon clear.

Miss Frangipane, who had tracked the leaders in the early stages emerged from the pack as the challenger but try as he may Frederik Tylicki could not cut down Equinine’s lead, eventually going down by a length.

The front pair finished eight lengths clear of their rivals, who were headed by Halcyon Days, who just held off the late challenge of Diamond Blade.

15:53 A handicap over the straight mile for our fourth contest.

Reel Buddy Star broke well bur Celtic Change was soon in front, attempting to make virtually all.
Halfway Celtic Charge was sharing the lead with Daaweitza and Reel Buddy Star.

The latter dropped back three out, with Capucci running on and the favourite Collateral Damage also making progress.

Inside the final furlong Collateral Damage hit the front and Reelo Buddy Star got a second wind to challenge the front pair, however the favourite was in total control, coming home 1¼ lengths clear.
Celtic Change just held on for second spot foiling Reel Buddy Star’s rally.

Glenmuir was another running on in the final stages and took fourth spot.

15:18 Well the big flame at the chemical works is now burning, the trouble is the course is down wind and with the flame is what can only be described as an industrial aroma.

Having said that the crowd isn’t that large and most are sheltering inside.

15:16 After two races for juveniles it was a chance for the older runners to strut their stuff, this time in a six furlong handicap.

Inter Vision was sent off the 4/1 favourite and conspired to miss the break, having to play catch-up throughout.

Just Sam set the early pace, pursued by On Offer and Avontuur.

Halfway Tangerine Trees made some headway but the effort was short lived. At the same time Hotham also came with the run and hit the front.

Luminous Gold tried to chase the leader and looked as though he was going challenge the leader but Hotham held on. Indeed Avontuur rallied and ended up being the bigger challenger to the winner, looking at one stage as though he would worry the leader out of the contest.

Inter Vision was running on in the closing stages but crossed the line a never nearer fourth.

14:44 Down to the minimum for our second contest, a maiden auction stakes.

An interesting betting heat which say consistent money for Durham Express, into 9/4 favouritism from 4/1, displacing Amno Dancer and Bronze Beau, the original favourites.

Micky’s Knock Off was first out of the gates but had been headed by Bronze Beau after a furlong.

Bronze Beau looked to be setting out to blaze a trail all the way to the line, until Clever Molly launched a challenge.

Durham Express
, who went to post early, looked to be floundering two out but eventually responded to pressure and ran on well inside the final furlong.

So well he managed to overhaul the front running Bronze Beau to record a half-length victory. Clever Molly was three parts of a length further back in third.

Hot Rod Mamma, who met trouble in running was doing her best work in the final stages and was possibly an unlucky fourth.

Burtondale Boy was with the pace before dropping back half-way.

14:15 Well as expected a competitive contest, well it was for most of the race until William Morgan under Tony Hamilton accelerated inside the final furlong, putting daylight between himself and his rivals, recording a 4½ length victory.

A furlong out sixteen of the seventeen had realistic chances, Flow Chard had been with the pace and Novay Essjay looked to be in with every chance before being beaten for pace in the closing stages.

An indication of how open the contest was is the minor honours were all taken, on merit, by runners priced 20/1 or higher.

Edward Whymper took the runners-up spot, with High Rolling and Gold Story taking the minors.

I’m afraid I can’t give much more of a report as the video recorded here in the press room has packed up, so we cannot watch the replays.

13:53 An “easy” seventeen runner nursery over seven furlongs to get us under way this afternoon and a tight betting heat, going 5/1 the field.

Very difficult to make a paddock pick as almost all the runners are wearing rugs.

12:47 another non-runner

12:40 Good afternoon from Redcar where it is overcast and there is rain in the air. There is also a very strong wind blowing, from the left relative to the home straight.
