Racing Live - Redcar 17th October 2008

17:56 That's it from Redcar both for today and the 2008 season.

Tomorrow we will have jumps action from Cheltenham, meanwhile it is a good evening from the twilight at Redcar

17:50 They say the camera never lies but if you look at the television pictures of the final race it looks quite bright, in reality it is actually very dull and very hard to see what happened in the race in natural light.

Full marks to commentator Stuart Machin, who shared the calling duties with Malcolm Tomlinson. I think Malcolm had the better deal.

Not only was this race run in poor light, the field were spread right across the course and for a good deal of the race it was nigh on impossible to call a leader.

It can be reported that David Allan on Ishiadancer was well in contention two out but he then faded so no four timer.

The race itself was decided in the final furlong with several running on horses and the lead changing a few times.

In the end it was Strawberry Moon ridden by Paul Mulrennan who took the honours, giving trainer Brian Smart a 156/1 treble.  Following him home was Top Tribute, the first two both coming towards the near side.

Third place went to Bertie Vista on the far side and fourth to Red Skipper.

What a great race to bring the curtain down on Redcar’s season.

17:31 I would not be surprised to see the jocks coming out wearing miners lamps on their caps. It is very dull here and the cars driving past the course all have their headlights on.

17:14 Back to sprint distances for our penultimate race and another odds-on favourite and just like the earlier one this one, Taqdeyr, was also turned over.

Not the quickest out of the stalls Neil Callan had to bring the favourite from the rear. By two out, and to his credit, he was contending for the lead but never looked like going away like an odds-on shot should.

He had his head in front briefly at the furlong marker but looked to be there under sufferance, with Liberty Ship niggling along alongside.

The biggest danger was coming from the rear in the shape of the grey Medici Time, ridden by the man of the day David Allan. Running on he took the lead in the final half furlong to record a 1½ length victory.

For followers of David Allan they would have been rewarded with returns of 1,106/1 and he is on a 14/1 shot in the last!!!

16:59 Some news from the Stewards room following the 4:30, Jimmy Quinn has picked up a two day ban for careless riding on Lemonesse.

16:55 Some excitement before the seventh as Little Pandora, who was going to post early, unshipped Catherine Gannon before careering back towards the parade ring. After breaking through a rail the filly fortunately came to a dead end and was quickly caught. Had she jinked the rail on the other side she could well have been loose in the enclosures.

16:38 A good little long distance race to keep the crowds attention for the sixth race and it produced a nice little finish.

River Danube waltzed away up front for most of the contest although you always had the feeling the gelding was there to be shot at.

Sure enough three out it was all change as the joint favourite, Monterrico, set off for home, however the lead was short lived as Bollin Rita, who settled in eight place down the back straight, came with a run on the outside under David Allan to take up the running.

However the grey Motarid was going to make sure Bollin Rita would have to fight for any victory and the winning jockey had to work really hard to ensure the winner kept her head in front.

The pair finished well ahead of the remainder who were led home by Garra Molly, who briefly looked like being a serious challenger a furlong out.

Monterrico came home in fourth place, whilst the other joint favourite Behengo was unsighted.

16:06  Into the second half of the card and some very interesting betting for this two year old maiden over the straight mile.

The Godolphin runner, Popiel, was well backed into 5/6 favouritism. More eyecatching, however, was the money bet on Bigalo’s Star backed from an opening 66/1 into 10/1.

Popiel set the pace after a good exit from the stalls, although early doors he was joined by Mick Channon’s Forty Thirty and the gambled on Bigalo’s star.

Two and a half out Popiel should have been running away with things, however Storming Sioux, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Liam Jones, had not read the script and came through to take up the running.

Popiel briefly tried to fight back but to no avail as Storming Sioux had stormed away to take the scalp of the favourite. To rub salt into Godolphin’s wounds, Swing It Ruby came with an eye catching run under Catherine Gannon, to grab the runners up spot.

For those on the big gamble, they must have been unhappy as Bigalo’s Star only managed fourth and if I were one of those backers I would be asking if the jockey could have tried that little bit harder.

15:36 The sun is now out but there is still a chill in the air.

The crowd is reasonable for a mid-week meeting although the young lady I just saw in the stands could not have seen the forecast - let's just say her attire is more suited for mid-summer than an October afternoon. She even had goose bumps on her goose bumps.

15:28 For the first time this afternoon we had a front running winner. Impressible got a flyer from the stalls which set him up for a front running performance where he led almost all the way, although it has to be said he had to work for his victory.

The winner had problems shaking off the attentions of Real Diamond and it was only at the furlong marker he put daylight between himself and the rest of the field.

Once clear jockey David Allan may have thought his problems were over, however Russell Kennemore launched Lily Jicaro with a blistering run that made the filly’s  opponents look flat footed and only just failed to overhaul the winner.

This was Lily Jicaro’s first appearance on the racetrack and boy was it eyecatching – one for the notebook.

Two and a quarter lengths back in third was Real Diamond, who deserved a place after giving the winner so much trouble earlier on.

The favourite Forgotten Dreams was never sighted.

14:49 A Hamlet moment in our third race when El Portet steadfastly refused to leave the stalls as the gates opened – that should get Big Mac foaming at the mouth.

A claiming race it showed that trainers can be as good at handicapping as the handicapper himself as the field were well bunched throughout.

Initially it seemed the centre / far side had the advantage but the winner Digit, came with a rattling run nearer the stand side to take the lead approaching the furlong marker, going on to win by a length and a quarter. Indeed all the placed runners came from the pace with Flyit grabbing second with Skruton back in third, officially 1¾ lengths but visually it looked to be further.

To be honest one of those races that tells you little and I cannot see any of these two-year-olds setting the world alight next season.

No surprise to know there were no claims for any of the runners.

14:18 A mile and a quarter ladies handicap for our second event and it produced a good finish with judge Nick Hargreave needing a photograph to decide the result.
Natural Rhythm set the early pace, arguably too strong a pace, as the colt was soon five lengths clear of the field.

Two out Natural Rhythm was still at the head of a weakening field and the race came down to who would hold out longest.

Once Natural Rhythm had ceded the lead it became a three way battle between Neon Blue, Miss Ferney and Emperor’s Well and that is the order they crossed the line with a neck and a head separating them.

Amy Ryan had to work really hard to get the winners head in front and it was a hard earned victory.
Waterloo Corner threw away any chance of winning by running wide throughout.

13:50 A six furlong maiden fillies event to get us underway .

The runners kept centre course in a race where the pace was set by Timeless Dream under Greg Fairley, accompanied by Oceanic Dancer.

Two out Paul Mulrennan launched a run on Mythicism, which proved to be decisive as he took the lead approaching the final furlong and held on to win by a neck.  The winner had been with the pace early on but seemed to have been given a breather about half way.

The pair finished four lengths clear of third placed Makaykla.

13:22 Some more jockey changes. 1:40 No 5 Gary Bartley (5) & 13 Catherine Gannon, 3:20 No 12 Silvestre De Sousa

12:50 A couple of jockey changes. In the second race at 2:10 No 14 Miss Ferney is now ridden by Rebecca Bastiman. Some later changes include Pat Cosgrave's, in the 5:05 No 19 Silk Gallery is now ridden by Andrew Mullen claiming 5lb. We are still waiting for news of his other ride.

12:30 Good afternoon from a chilly and overcast Redcar, where a very tricky eight race card brings down the curtain on their 2008 season.

I must admit it is quite strange arriving at the course and seeing a sign saying the next meeting is Easter Monday 2009.

We have five non-runners so far, details on the right.

The official going is Good.
