18:07 That's it from a delightful afternoons racing at this lovely course.
Now the dash to get back to the airport - from Perth a very good evening.
18:00 It was no surprise that the finale went to most peoples idea of the banker bet of the day, in the shape of Nigel Twistan-Davies Diablo.
Time For Perks under Richard Johnson was the hare, tracked by the eventual winner. It was four out that Paddy Brennan asked the favourite for an effort and he easily took the lead. There was a minor scare near the end when he appeared to tire but he responded well to pressure and he held off the late challenge of Prosecco who was running on well and will probably win a small race.
The other fancied runner, Quiny Boy, probably blew his chance when hitting teh fourth from home. He did rally but was never a danger.
17:40 The second division of the maiden is as open as the first. Diablo who was promising in bumpers disappointed first time out over hurdles. Two ex-French raiders catch the eye. AP McCoy has elected to ride Pas De Baratin Boy but I prefer David Pipe’s runner Quiny Boy.
17:22 Our long distance hurdle race bought us a brave victor in the shape of Mr Preacher Man.
Leading from flag fall Peter Buchanan took them along at a fair pace.
By the start of the final circuit he had a good nine length lead.
Things looked ominous turning for home as he came back to the field and was challenged by Manoubi, who had been settled nearer last for most of the contest, then also Flying Doctor who had been tracking the leaders.
A good battle ensued as Manoubi almost joined the leader but that was his lot as Flying Doctor became the challenger with the running on Baileys Encore and it wass Baileys Encore who gave the winner most to do, taking the runners up spot with Flying Doctor back in third.
The favourite, Buck the Legend, was never in contention finishing only sixth after coming with a brief but fruitless run before stumbling turning for home.
17:02 Flying Doctor has been on a good run until his last run, which can be excused. With no other serious rivals he should regain his form
16:56 Only six runners in the novice hurdle and although the field were well reasonably bunched for most of the race, come the end they were strung out like Monday’s washing.
Once again the betting almost got it right with the top two in the betting filling the first two places.
Outsider Abbey Express took them along early on and provided some excitement turning out of the home straight on the first circuit, as the gelding seemed to give some serious consideration to running out – however he did consent to take part in the second circuit. He continued to lead for two more flights before engaging reverse gear.
He was replaced up front by the even money favourite, Rory Boy, and as the pace injected the field began to string out. Coming to the last the only challenger looked to be the well backed second favourite, Nine Stories.
Coming to the last Denis O’Regan kicked Nine Stories on and thereafter the result was never in any doubt with the combination coming home to win by 11 lengths. Rory Boy took the runners spot, 14 lengths further ahead of Ski Sunday.
16:28 In our next event it is very hard to look past the favourite, Rory Boy. A course and distance winner. His only real opposition looks to be Maidstone Mixture but he is having to give weight to the remainder.
16:22 Our longest race of the day proved to be an interesting race with an, almost, all the way winner.
Outsider of the field South Bronx led from the start setting a comfortable pace. By contrast the favourite, Cebonne, was trailing the field most of the way.
Whilst South Bronx led the favourite came with a run as they turned from the back straight but he flattered to deceive and quickly faded after reaching the heady heights of fourth and eventually trailed in last.
Turning for home South Bronx and Golden Child had a good lead on the remainder and at the second last Golden Child jumped into the lead and it looked as though South Bronx had shot his bolt.
However as they approached the last Golden Child faded as quickly as he ran on leaving South Bronx in the lead and a new challenger in the shape of Hoopy, who had beeen put to sleep near the back early on. There was a great battle to the line with Golden Bronx just holding on by a neck from the running on Hoopy, with Golden Child having a second wind and finishing a further neck back in third.
15:55 A very close contest and another where I am going to go for an outsider in the shape of Just In Debt. An infrequent winner he could well run for a place.
15:45 Well our tips today seem to be a kiss of death, with a non-runner in our last.
In this race Jordan’s Light took a kick at the start and was withdrawn by the vet. A 9/1 shot this resulted in a 10p in the pound deduction.
Roman Villa was sent off the 11/8 favourite abut only just, as Nicki Boy was backed heavily from 4/1 into 7/4.
As in the first race it was the favourites who battled it out to the line. Roman Villa had been held up to run on from three out and he jumped into the lead at the last. However Richard Johnson on Nicki Boy had the move covered and a good battle ensued on the run-in, with the well backed winner running on to take victory by 1½ lengths.
Lucinda Russel’s Summer Soul, who had been with the pace throughout, took third.
15:20 The third race looks to be a stinker. Jordan’s Light ran on the flat at Hamilton on Monday and has done little wrong in two runs over hurdles at Cartmel and at 9/1 looks a decent each way proposition.
15:08 The second race bought home the thrills and spills of national hunt racing.
Freddie The Third was sent off the favourite but any chance of willing was lost when he made mistakes at fences six and seven, when tracking the leaders. He eventually finished sixth of seven finishers.
Timmy Murphy was going for a quick double on Brave Bronco and he set the pace, leading all the way but falling at the last. Although leading at the time it was a tired fall and it is unlikely he would have won even if he had stayed on his feet.
All the fall did was make it slightly easier for Jason Maguire to steer Notre Cyborg to a comfortable 11 length win. Speaking after the race the rider said he was confident he would have won anyway. This was Maguire’s first win following a return from injury.
Carthys Cross took the runners-up spot with Go Silver Bullet back in third.
14:40 In the second Freddie The Third looks to be obvious choice however, at a price, I liked the look of Kristiansand, a winner on the flat at Musselburgh last week. He doesn’t win that often over obstacles but today could have been his day, however he is now a non-runner.
14:35 Well the betting said it was going to be a three horse race and so it proved with the top three in the betting filling the first three places, well clear of the remainder.
The pace was set by Baron Breeze who set off in front, a position he retained until three out when the big three started to battle it out.
Diamond Frontier who had disputed the lead throughout was the first to take up the running in the final stages, closely attended by Quail. However the favourite, Its Tough, was tracking the pair.
Approaching the last Quail was the first to crack leaving Diamond Frontier and Its Tough to battle it out to the line. It looked as though it was going to be a photo finish but Timmy Murphy got the favourite a length clear in the final strides.
The long time leader ended up finishing fifth. Solway Bay ran on well to take fourth.
13:50 The first race is an interesting affair with several hurdling debutants. Of those with experience Diamond Frontier looks to be the best. However there are also some interesting runners with decent bumper form.
Its Tough from the David Pipe yard is set to go off favourite.
Nigel Twiston-Davies is a successful raider at Perth and it would be no great shock if his Quail took the opener.
12:00 Good afternoon from Perth, where the weather is overcast and the official going is a rather complicated Good to Soft, Good in places, with some soft patches in the back straight. The Going Stick reading is 6.6
Only the one non-runner so far.
