Racing Live - Nottingham 12th August 2008

20:35 That’s it from Nottingham where a good crowd enjoyed the racing.

Our next live coverage comes from Newbury on Friday.

From Nottingham a very good evening.

20:30
Another minimum distance contest to finish off proceedings this evening with some relief for favourite backers as Equuleus Pictor made all and won by an easy 1½ lengths.
High Reach was in contention but faded a furlong out.

Matterofact ran on well to grab the runners up spot from Tender Process, also running on and there was a blanket finish for fourth place.

20:00 Back down to the minimum distance for our fifth race and a very competitive conditions stakes.

Peace Offering
was considered a lucky winner last time out at Newmarket where in a tactical race it is said he was handed victory. Tonight there is no doubt it was a deserved victory for the Nicholls family with father Dandy training and son Adrian riding.

Two horses vied for favouritism, Chief Editor eventually sent off at 11/4 managed to take second place under Jamie Spencer. The eventual 2/1 favourite Befortyfour finished third but lost the race in the early stages where he took a somewhat eccentric course, preferring to go the bendy route rather than in a straight line.

19:45 Going back to our 6:55 race and the stewards enquiries. In the interference enquiry Jamie Spencer was found guilty of careless riding and given a caution. In the whip enquiry he was found guilty and given a two day ban.

19:30 An interesting six furlong nursery next, which looked to be competitive on paper beforehand and three out it was just that with most of the field line abreast.

Another saying in racing is back those near the top in early season nurseries and so it came to pass the top three took the first three places.

It was also good news for favourite backers as Shadow Bay took the prize. The Tom Dascombe trained, Richard Kingscote ridden gelding looked to be in trouble half way but he ran on well centre course under strong urging in the final stages to give his trainer a maiden course victory.

The tissue favourite, but weak on course, Lisburn was always to the van but only managed third from the running on Happy Anniversary, who didn’t seem to like the conditions.

Good news is the rain has stopped, although it is still very dull

19:15 Goodbye sunshine the rain has returned and it is very dull outside.

19:00 Oh to be a bookmaker at Nottingham as another odds-on favourite bites the dust and Tasheba was a well backed favourite to boot, opening at 4/5 and going off at 4/7.

Running over 1¾ miles Yossi was the pacesetter, going at a steady pace in the conditions, he was closely attended by the outsider Salute – indeed they did swap the lead a couple of times. The favourite was happy to settle in third place.

In the home straight Salute was the first to fold and the favourite began to run on and looked to be in a challenging position but he failed to deliver. Ultimately it was The Betchworth Kid, under Jamie Spencer who challenged from last place.

Running on well he took the lead inside the final furlong to win by two lengths. Yossi just held on for the runners-up spot with the favourite finishing third.

There is a stewards enquiry, well two in fact, one looking at interference between the winner and the favourite and the other looking at Jamie Spencers whip use.

18:30 There is an old adage in racing – back the outsider of three. In this second race we had three runners and guess which one won. Yep – the outsider of three.

The Mark Johnston trained Crackdown was sent off the 8/15 favourite, with John Gosdens’s Pergamon the second favourite at 5/2 and Canwinn the 6/1 outsider, trained by Mick Channon.

As in  the first the field set off in Indian File with Pergamon leading, followed by Crackdown and Canwinn hacking up behind.

Three out, the favourite came alongside the leader but didn’t seem to want to put his head in front and as they approached the furlong marker it looked like a two horse race. However Canwinn was making steady progress and in the final half furlong passed the other two to win by 1¼ lengths from Pergamon amnd the favourite finishing a further 1¼ lengths back.

Connections of the favourite said he is “a bit of a lad” and that he did not like the soft going – I just think he looked irresolute.

Red face of the evening award goes to course commentator Graham Goode who, before racing, confidently said "Canwinn cannot win." - whoops!!!!

18:00 Not so much a race for our first event, more a procession, with the field strung out from the start.

None more so than Hester Brook who only deigned to leave the stalls once the remainder had gone at least a furlong.

The very well backed favourite Clear Sailing set the pace and was never headed, indeed it is safe to say the George Baker trained favourite was never even challenged.

Initially it was Touch Of Style who went with the leader, these two very well clear of Master Mahogany, Dragon Slayer and Given A Choice, with Hester Brook tootling along at her home pace.

That is very much the order they stayed in until the home turn when Touch Of Style dropped off the pace and Master Mahogany ran on into second.

A furlong from home Master Mahogany got within a couple of lengths of the leader but a shake of the reigns from the promising claimer Frederik Tylicki and he ran on again to win by 2¾ lengths.

Dragon Slayer ran past the tiring Touch Of Style to take third place eight lengths behind the front pair.

17:25 Good evening from Nottingham where the sun is currently shining but there are a few clouds as well, plus a cooling breeze blowing down the home straight.

This is the first of two meetings at the course this week with a "School's Out" themed day on Friday.

12:40 Following heavy rain the going at Nottingham is now Soft.

As a result we already have a number of non-runners.
