08:39 It has been a dry night at Newmarket, where they race on the Rowley Mile course, the official going is Good to Firm (watered).

The forecast is for a "mainly dry" day and the seven race card begins at 14:00.

There is currently just the one non-runner.

09:40 Another non-runner.

12:55 Good afternoon from Newmarket, where the weather is overcast as we reluctantly desert jumps racing for some flat action.

Just when we thought we had escaped him this afternoons commentator is Tommo – oh well c’est la vie.

We currently have three non-runners, as always details can be found on the right.

13:21 Have just been for a walk around outside and with 40 minutes to the first race it is like a morgue – it doesn’t help with Newmarket being such a large course it needs a decent size crowd to give it some atmosphere.

13:28 I haven't mentioned food for a few days, we have an excellent lamb curry here this afternoon.

13:29 Our opening contest is the 6f 32Red  EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes in which eight two-year-old fillies line up.

They should be in the ring shortly and I will let you know how they look shortly. Paddock inspection will be telling as only one of the runners has seen a racecourse before.

13:57 Well neither the parade ring or the runners going down gave us any clues at all.

For a ring full of two year old fillies they were all impeccably behaved.

I think a race to watch rather than a race to play in.

The Hannon newcomer Looksmart is unpopular in the betting, available at 3/1 just over an hour ago she is now trading at 7/1.

The one with experience, Hortensia, is the favourite.

14:09 It is often said experience counts and it proved to be the case in this contest as Hortensia got an absolute flyer out of the stalls and was never headed, despite a few of her rivals having a good go.

First to challenge was Idiom, who came upsides half-way but was unable to get her head in front.

Coming out of the dip Madany and Looksmart came with challenges but no sooner were their challenges launched than Hortensia found an extra gear and pulled clear to record a 2¼ length victory.

A good battle for the runners-up spot with Madnay getting the better of Locksmith by a nose.

Shane Kelly is probably due a request to have a talk to the stewards for his ride on Sixty Roses, whom he eased almost two furlongs out.

The second and third will lear from the experience and are worth a look next time out.

14:22 Race two is the one mile 32red.com Handicap in which ten three-year-olds take their chance.

Like the first very few clues in the parade ring, Number One Guy is having a good look around as he goes round the ring.

Rain On The Wind is going to post early.

14:25 Flag Of Glory has attempted to unseat Jack Mitchell on the way out of the parade ring, but his rider sits tight.

14:42 After favourite backers were rewarded in the opener it was all change in the second as One Good Emperor came home the 25/1 winner, coming with a good run down the centre of the course.

Rain In The Wind set the early pace, leading what was a tightly packed field, by contrast the eventual winner was settled last.

Secretive made progress half way to launch a challenge and this coincided with Kieren Fox asking One Good Emperor for an effort.

Coming out of the dip the pair pulled clear and it initially looked as though there was going to be a decent battle to the line, however One Good Emperor always had enough in hand to record a three parts of a length victory.

Front running Rain On The Wind held on for third.

The favourite Flag Of Glory was disappointing.

14:49 The Bet At 32red.com Handicap sees six taking part in the 6f contest.

A slight negative for Burghley who is slightly on his toes in the parade ring.

15:08 Another disappointing favourite, this time Burghley (our paddock negative) who failed to respond when asked for an effort coming out of the dip, having been settled in rear.

Up front it was no surprise to see the Mark Johnston runner Jarrow set the pace, with Cockney Class and Kanaf in attendance. Indeed these three filled the first three places throughout the contest, none of their rivals able to launch a decent challenge.

Jarrow still had the advantage a furlong from home but Liam Jones asked Cockney Class to launch his challenge and he swept to the front in good style, with Jarrow unable to respond.

The Johnston runner held onto the runners-up spot with Kanaf in third.

Favourite Burghley was a never nearer fourth.

The winner certainly impressed with the way he ran on in the closing stages.

15:18 Next up we have the 32redpoker.com Handicap, a seven furlong contest with eight looking to win the £9,066 first prize.

Belle des Airs is the non-runner.

15:26 Cape Rock is going to post early.

A couple of negatives, Lindoro is attempting to bite through his bit and is getting more on his toes the longer he remains in the parade ring. Ocean Legend is jig-jogging around the ring.

Judging just on looks and demeanour Orpenindeed catches the eye.

15:44 What an amazing training performance from Amanda Perrett, Coasting has been off the course for 1007 days but it did not stop him winning, given a perfectly timed ride by Pat Dobbs.

Surprisingly jockeys still seem to be sticking towards the far rail but every winner so far this afternoon has come down the centre of the course.

Cape Rock and Barons Spy set the pace with favourite Ocean Legend close behind, Coasting was settled near the rear.

Ocean Legend hit the front coming out of the dip and looked the likely winner. However Dobbs, who was in last position three out, had launched his challenge, hitting the front inside the final yards, recording a half-length victory.

The rallying Cape Rock was a head further back in third place.

Santefisio looked to be a challenger until fading inside the final furlong and will improve for this his first run of the season.

15:49 Another fillies’ contest up next, which sees five face the starter for the 1½ mile 32Red Casino Maiden Fillies Stakes.

Norse Dame is the non-runner.

15:59 It is really funny – the opening race was contested by two-year-old fillies, most of them unraced, and they were impeccably behaved.

This race has some more experienced three-year-olds and all five of them were on their toes to varying degrees, with Kleio being a really hard puller.

16:20 Plenty of shenanigans at the start as Doyenne Dream twice reared and fell before she was withdrawn.

This left just four contenders.

Radio Wave set the pace, tracked by Meeznah, Kleio and Affinity.

There was little change in the order until the race developed three out.

At this point Chris Catlin kicked Meeznah into the lead and they soon pulled well clear, eventually coming home unchallenged, nine lengths clear of her rivals.

There was a mini-battle for second with Affinity resolutely refusing to pass Radio Wave, the pair eventually separated by half-a-length.

Kleio was a major disappointment and came home tailed off, a distance behind her rivals.

16:35 Race six is the 32Red Handicap a mile and a quarter contest with a dozen lining up.

Ramona Chase is going to post early.

Gordon Road is on his toes in the parade ring, Woolfall Sovereign is also slightly on his toes, General Tufto is having a good look round.

16:58 Sceptics said that will be the day if Buddy Holly took this contest. Very much an everyday race he tracked the leading pair (Penchesco and It’s Dubai Dolly).

General Tufto, Gordon Road and Hits Only Cash were also to the fore with Basra looking set to challenge behind before blowing up.

Penchesco was still leading coming out of the dip but it was obvious Buddy Holly had been learning the game, once in front it was easy to think it’s over and it was clear it’s so easy as he came home two clear of Penchesco.

Archie Rice made eye catching progress to take third spot with Petsas Pleasure running on to take fourth.

17:11 Down to 5f for our final contest and a dozen line up over the minimum trip for the 32Red Casino Handical.

Master Lightfoot is the absentee.

Ziggy Lee is a little bit on his toes, The Jobber is dribbling as he walks round.

Zowington, Make My Dream and Fine Silk all looked nice.

17:31 A typical Newmarket sprint with many in with chances coming out of the dip with The Jobber looking to be running best of all, yet he somehow contrived to finish unplaced, eventually coming home dead heating for fourth with Evelyn May.

Honours went to Ziggy Lee who came out of the dip best of all, coming home from Brynfa Boy, who also handled the exit from the dip well.

They were 1¾ clear of Our Piccadilly.

Hard luck story of the race was joint fourth Evelyn May who twice met trouble in running.

Backers of the winners stablemate, Zowington, knew their fate as soon as the gates opened, missing the break badly.

Favourite Taurus Twins was a disappointing seventh.

17:33 That’s it from Newmarket where a small crowd has witnessed some reasonable rather than sensational racing.

I don’t think we have seen any future classic winners this afternoon but what the heck.

We shall be back here again tomorrow afternoon, until then a very good afternoon.
