Racing Live - Newmarket 3rd October 2009

17:41 That’s it from Newmarket on Cambridgeshire Day, a few shock results and definitely a day for the bookies.

A good crowd, just a shame about the strong wind.

Tomorrow we will be at Longchamp for Europe’s biggest race, the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and it looks to be a cracking renewal.

We will bring you all the atmosphere and news from the big day, until then good evening from headquarters.

17:37 One of those races where it is almost impossible to make it sound exciting and, indeed to make it sound exciting would be an injustice.

The pace was steady and was set by Resplendent Light, with Lochiel in pursuit. A few lengths behind sat Camps Bay and Lord Theo, with the favourite, Senses, happy to sit patiently in rear.

That was the story of the race for most of the contest.

Three out Lochiel edged past Resplendent Light and the others were still three behind, although Senses had edged forward to challenge for third spot.

Inside the final furlong Lochiel slowly increased the lead, coming home the 4½ length winner.

Senses was running on inside the final furlong but had left it too late to mount a serious challenge and was not even able to pass Resplendent Light for the runners-up spot.

17:17 Our final contest, the View Tattersalls Lot 5 & 39 Handicap, is also our longest race of the day, over 1½ miles. It is also our smallest field of the afternoon with only five of the ten declared going to face the starter.

Nothing exceptional to report from the parade ring.

17:03 A nice little handicap for the penultimate race of the Cambridgeshire Festival and another cracking finish.

Celtic Sultan was quickly away and soon across to the far rail and taking the field along at a fair pace. Aldermoor and Thebes were with the leader and the three of them were still in contention as they passed the furlong marker – it was a question of which of the three would take the spoils.

Aldermoor was the one who slipped into the lead and was soon a length clear, Celtic Sultan was holding second and Thebes was attempting to gram second place.

Towards the centre of the course One Way Or Another began to make late progress and was eating up the ground. He was soon in second place and closing on the leader but Aldermoor held on by a diminishing head to take the spoils.

One Way Or Another took second, whilst the favourite Celtic Sultan held off Thebes to take third.

16:45 The Best Odds Guaranteed At totesport.com Handicap, another seven furlong contest, is next.

15 go to post, another handicap knocked down below the 1-2-3-4.

Spanish Bounty was frisky in the ring.

16:42 The result stands.

16:32 Despair for each way backers as Water Biscuit was withdrawn at the start on veterinary advice, reducing the field to 15 runners and 1-2-3 for the places.

Those who will be aggrieved are backers of Mistic Magic, who came fourth at 20/1.

Cash Queen Anna and Dark Eyes were to the fore once the field merged after a couple of furlongs and they held the lead as they came out of the dip.

At this point Ryan Moore launched the favourite Bab At The Bowster with a run and a battle ensued with Cash Queen Anna.

They crossed the line locked together and for the second race in a row Nick Bostock had to resort to the camera to decide the result, which went in favour of Bab At The Bowster.

However the winner did drift to the left and there was certainly contact with the runner-up and the Stewards are taking a look.

Dark Eyes was battling on well in the final stages and was only a neck behind in third.

16:08 The EBF Jersey Lilly Fillies’ Nursery Handicap over 7f is our next contest.

A number of these fillies are on their toes although it is difficult to say if it is temperament or just a reaction to the swirling wind.

16:01 Well the totesport.com Cambridgeshire Handicap once again threw up a surprise result in which Supaseus put in a brave performance to make all and bravely hold off a late challenge from Tartan Gigha, who would have run in another stride.

Unsurprisingly those battling out the finish were against the far rail, which is certainly the place to be. Indeed there was a slight split early doors but never further than centre course.

Supaseus was drawn 26 but was soon far enough clear to grab the far rail.

The field were well bunched coming out of the dip and one of those making good progress at that point was Applause, but he was unable to trouble the front two.

Tartan Gigha joined Supaseus on the far rail a furlong out whilst Nanton and Applause had their own private battle in the centre of the course.

Half a furlong out Supaseus still had a half length advantage but Tartan Gigha was slowly gaining.

They crossed the line locked together and it took judge Nick Bostock a while to call the result.

In the battle for third it was almost a repeat of the battle for first and second with Nanton just holding off the late challenge of Applause.

Most bookmakers were paying on the first five and they are probably smiling as that place went to the 100/1 outsider Shavansky.

15:36 Wannabe King is attracting money and has been backed from 11/1 into 8/1 favouritism

15:30 First of all good luck to Mike Cattamole, Simon Holt and John Hunt who have the dubious pleasure of commentating on this contest for on-course, Channel Four and Radio Five respectively.

Thirty two runners line up for the first part of the Autumn double.

An open betting heat, they go 8/1 the field with Almiqdaa and Applause vying for favouritism.

15:16 On a weekend where the racing spotlight falls on Paris the French are making it a weekend to remember at Newmarket.

After Special Duty took the Cheveley Park Stakes yesterday, Sahpresa pulled off something of a shock in taking the Sun Chariot Stakes, lowering the colours of Ghanaati.

Spacious set the pace and Ghanaati went with her, along with Alnadana.

Spacious and Ghanaati were still locked together as they came out of the dip before Ghanaati eventually came clear.

However in Ted Durcan had clearly been told to ride Sahpresa in typical French style and come with a late run. The orders certainly work as she positively rattled up the hill and Ghanaati had nothing to give when she was passed.

Spacious held on for third and the running on Strawberrydaiquiri  took fourth.

14:56 The £200,000 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes over a mile is next up.

A relatively small card by this afternoons standards with only eight going to post.

A two horse contest according to the betting with Ghanaati the 11/8 favourite and the grey Strawberrydaiquiri trading around the 4/1 mark.

Ghanaati did look really good in the parade ring, although there were no negatives to report.

14:47 Some hot news from Longchamp where the wonder filly Goldikova has been beaten in the Prix De La Foret by Varenar.

Goldikova looked like winning the race when taking up the runing in the home straight.

However she seemed unable to pull away of her rivals and, first of all, Sweet Hearth mounted achallenge, before the Aga Khan's Varenar came with a strong run under Stephane Pasquier to grab victory on the line.

14:46 It cannot be every day that a horse wins a £1,000,000 race without a massive roar from the crowd.

To say this race had a surprise result would be a massive understatement with the first two coming home at 66/1 and 50/1 – I think the only loud cheers must have come from the bookmakers.

There was some joy for each way backers as the well backed Take Ten came home in third spot.

The field spilt into two groups and one lesson that must be learned is that coming to the stand side is suicidal as the far side were always ahead and the near side runners were well beaten.

Unluckily for punters, but excellent for the bookies, was that the well backed favourite Markazzi, ridden by Richard Hills, was in the stand side group and he couldn’t even win on that side.

In the closing stages there were only three in with chances and Oasis Dancer, Kona Coast and Take Ten all had chances. Indeed Take Ten was running on best of all but the line came in time to save the two outsiders, in which battle Oasis Dancer got the better of Kona Coast.

14:19 Race two is the Tattersalls Timeform Million over seven and, as the title suggests, £1,000,000 up for grabs, so no surprise we have a big field, with 23 facing the starter.

We have news of another non-runner, with Bushman out of the Cambridgeshire.

14:04 Wow!!!

A very impressive run from the odds-on favourite, Lillie Langtry, who met all sorts of trouble in running yet when finding space was unleashed with a devastating turn of foot to make her rivals look static, taking the contest by 2¼ lengths.

Dubawi Heights and Waveband set the pace and had the field in their wake. The pair still had the advantage a furlong out and looked set to battle out the finish as Lillie Langtry was behind a wall of horses.

Jira looked to be the only challenger to the front pair inside the furlong.

Dubawi Heights was winning the battle with wavelength until Lillie Langtry showed she was a different class.

Dubawi Heights held on for second, with Waveband (66/1) back in third.

A running-on Pink Symphony denied Jira fourth spot.

Lillie Langtry has been cut from 10/1 into 8/1 for next years 1,000 Guineas by William Hill. Paddy Power were more impressed cutting her from 10's to 7's.

13:45 Plenty of money on offer this afternoon and the opening Tattersalls Timeform Fillies 800 had £800,000 of prize money.

For two-year-olds over seven furlongs.

Needless to say a decent field turning out for this contest with the Aidan O’Brien trained Lillie Langtry trading odds-on. It is difficult to see just how fit she is as she has a huge rug on.

One or two of the runners were on their toes in the ring but with the strong wind whipping round the course it is no surprise the youngsters are on their toes.

12:35 Good afternoon from Newmarket where it is overcast and very windy with a gale blowing right to left across the home straight.

We have another three non-runners.

10:02 The number of non-runners is now picking up - again full details on the right.

09:25 One more non-runner, bringing the total to six - details on the right.

08:22 Another dry night overnight and the going remains Good to Firm. A further 4mm of water was added to the final 6f after racing yesterday. There is still a still cross wind
