Racing Live - Newmarket 2nd October 2008

17:42 Well that’s it from day one of this three day meeting, an easy day with only seven races – tomorrow we have nine so a marathon effort starting at 1:00.

Join us here tomorrow until then good evening from the Rowley mile.

17:36
A mile handicap for our finale and it was gamble landed as the well backed Willow Dancer (7/1 into 9/2) won the race well.

Always with the pace and disputing the lead with Summer Gold in the early stages, Steve Drowne pushed him easily into the lead two out and the Walter Swinburn trained gelding never looked to be in any danger.

Jack Mitchell tried to produce favourite Ace Of Hearts with a run but was never a danger to the winner, only getting to within ¾ of a length. The pair finished 2¼ lengths ahead of Daaweitza.

17:13 The result stands in the last race

17:02 Only six runners in this fillies handicap but there was plenty of argy bargey in the race.

Angus Newz was sent off the drifting 3/1 favourite, in truth the filly was not going to be happy on the prevailing going, her last two wins have been with give in the ground.

To her credit she was with the pace for most of the race, along with Temple Of Thebes.

Two out the favourite was back in the lead but being challenged on the outside by Masada, ridden by Martin Dwyer. Bastakiya under Ryan Moore then went for the narrowest of gaps between Masada and Angus Newz. There was plenty of contact as Masada leant into Bastakiya who in turn leant on Angus Newz.

The stewards are taking a look at the race.

16:45 It looks like we have had another Newmarket punch up as a posse of  police charge into the beer tent – either that or the local constabulary have a mass thirst attack although with two police women leading a chap out I suspect not.

16:32 Down to the minimum distance for our next race and they went a fair lick again, only seven hundredths of a second outside the course record.

Honours went to the Nicholls sprinting family with Adrian riding Peace Offering to victory for father Dandy.

Always with the pace he took the lead off Princess Ellis  inside the final furlong. His main danger came on the outside in the shape of Siren’s Gift who made a valiant but vain attempt to head the leader, eventually going down by half a length.

Sir Mark Prescott’s Starlight Sands was always tailed off and eventually pulled up and dismounted a furlong from home.

15:57 The seven furlong Tattersalls Race was a very interesting race.

Wingwalker was the weak favourite going off shade of odds on. The Henry Cecil colt was backed to follow up his impressive Sandown win fifteen days ago. However the colt was eye catching for all the wrong reasons today. Very free going to the start he was just as bad in the race, expending far too much energy fighting jockey Tom Queally.

The pace in the race was set by Michael Hills on North East Corner, tracked by Derbaas.
However it was two horses who were nearer last than first early doors who stole the show.

First of all Jamie Spencer launched Control Zone with a sweeping run to take the lead in very impressive style to take a commanding lead approaching the bushes.

Champion jockey elect Ryan Moore had other ideas and he took the “anything you can do, I can do better” approach on Ashram and in similar style he launched a run leaving everything else, including Control Zone, looking leaded footed, to record a very impressive 4½ victory.

This one is definitely going in the notebook and if any further evidence was required the winners time was a new course record by almost half a second.

15:21 It is strange how your eyes can sometimes deceive you. The pace in the 1¾ mile Noel Murless  Stakes looked to be somewhat uneven, yet the clock says they were only a quarter of a second outside the course record.

Nobody was keen to lead early on as Lough Diver missed the break.  Eventually, probably more by default, Fiulin set the pace. Silk Affair followed and then Lough Diver, Resplendednt Light and the
Betchworth Kid in Indian file, the field tracked by Frankie Dettori on the favourite Savarain.

The order changed very little until three out when Lough Diver faded badly.

Two out the favourite had a break against the stands rail but did not look too keen to run on.

A furlong and a half out Fiulin still had the lead and Savarain was in second place with the others all fading. Dettori was still riding a cool race eventually asking the colt to run on inside the final furlong. When he did the move was decisive and he ran on to record a 1¾ length victory over the brave front runner, the pair finishing eleven lengths ahead of their rivals.

14:46 A 28 runner six furlong two year old race for our second contest – easy!!!

To make following the race even more difficult the runners split into three groups spread across the course.

Despite the very large field there was a strong favourite in the shape of the filly Excellerator who was sent of at 11/4, having opened at 7/2.

Two out she was in prime position against the stands rail but the others were queuing up to take her on.

In the end it was the stands side who had it with Kingship Spirit from the Jeremy Noseda yard grabbing victory in the final stages from Pyrrha who looked to be the winner half a furlong out.

As in the first, the winner ran on really well under a strong Johnny Murtagh ride. Pyrrha held on for second place with Imperial Guest half a length further back in third.

14:14 A tricky little maiden for the opening heat of the three day meeting.

The race made more difficult by the fact ten of the seventeen runners were making their racecourse debut.

Alhaque, an eye catching second on debut here at Newmarket, was sent off the well backed 11/8 favourite.

The colt was always to the fore and took the lead three furlongs from home and looked to be very much the winner until the very final stages.

The fly in the ointment for favourite backers was Barry Hills Redwood, ridden by son Richard. In a terrible position with nowhere to go approaching the furlong marker, Richard Hills had to take the colt well to the right to find a place. Once he found a space, the horse ran on with an impressive turn of foot to take the lead in the last few yards to record a ¾ length victory.

It has to be said the manner of victory was most impressive and this looks to be a horse destined to win some more races.

Third spot went to Roman Glory who, along with fourth placed Kansai Spirit was one pace at the finish.

13:00 Another non-runner to add to the list

12:20 Good afternoon from Newmarket where although the sun is shining there is a chill wind blowing across the heath, a very autumnal day.

We have eight non-runners so far, details on the right.

The official going is Good to Firm
