17:40 That’s it from Market Rasen on what turned out to be a pleasant afternoon weather wise.
Indeed it is a lovely course and well worth a visit, offering very good viewing of the entire course. Something I’m sure commentator Malcolm Tomlinson appreciated after calling at Great Leighs yesterday.
From deepest Lincolnshire good night.
17:35 Last blood to the bookies as another odds-on favourite was turned over.
Film Festival was the well backed jolly and after tracking the leaders initially the gelding under Robert Thornton took up the running starting the final circuit.
By the far side he had a decent lead but turning for home the fitsr distress signals started to appear.
Entering the home straight there was only one challenger, Wizard Of Us , although the remainder of the field did close coming for home.
Taking up this afternoons theme of inevitability you just knew a shock was on the cards and so it was the 20/1 shot under Mark Bradburn left the odds-on shot looking flat footed and he romped away to a six length victory.
Indeed Film Festival had to fight to retain second place as the running on Portavadie almost grabbed the runners up spot – all the more impressive considering he was well tailed off as they passed the judge for the first time.
17:05 Inevitability seems to be the theme this afternoon. Mr McCoy may have failed to record a double in the last race (incidentally the stewards did have a peek but decided there had been no riding offence committed) duly too this next one on the 6/4 favourite Akram.
Not surprisingly he lurked, he came and he won. Taking the lead at the last and running on for a comfortable 4½ length victory from Sea Venture who, like the winner, came from the pack with a late run.
16:35 Well a cracking finish to out fifth race with the front running Brave Joe and Sycho Fred locked together as they crossed the line.
It took judge Brian Goodwill a while to decide but the spoils went to the brave front runner under David Dennis.
Once again McCoy was looming large in the McManus green and gold but as he went for a gap in the home run it closed and he lost any chance of getting his double.
Side on it looked bad but when seen head on he just lost his racing spot and no enquiry was called.
Graham Lee was taken back to the weighing room in the ambulance after taking a crashing fall on Deputy Mayor at the second, however he did walk into the ambulance.
16:00 There must be no worse sight for a jockey than sitting comfortably leading a race to look over your shoulder and seeing AP McCoy looming on a seemingly looking fresh horse.
That was just the nightmare Nick Williams faced as her turned for home in our fourth race on Mcevoy. Having led all the way he looked behind to see the maestro travelling well on Spirit Of New York.
To his credit the amateur tried to make a race of it but the writing was on the wall as the eleven times champion jockey took his mount into the lead at the last. In the end winning by an increasing 5 lengths.
Mcevoy took second with Aleron a further 11 lengths back in third.
15:32 Well the rain has arrived and it is coming down stadily now
15:25 One for the bookies in our third race with the odds on favourite Zilcash getting turned over.
To be honest if you were on the favourite you would have been worried even before they set off as he was very headstrong coming out onto the track.
Arguably he was very lucky to get second place as he was booked for third until Chrysander departed two out.
Victory however went to Seymour Weld who, under Adam Pogson, put in an enterprising front running performance which drew the sting out of his rivals.
Speaking after the race the jockey confirmed it was his intention to draw the sting from his rivals.
The horse is a local favourite as he is trained locally by the jockey's Dad Charlie making it a real family win.
15:50 It looks as though we are ion for an afternoon of excitement here at Market Rasen.
Whereas the excitement came at the start of the opening race, in the second it came at the end.
The favourite Tobago Bay had made all – well almost. Carry On Cleo set off in front but jinked hard left approaching the first – it’s lucky she was in the lead or she could have taken a few others out with her. After that episode the favourite led being kept company by
Hyper Viper most of the way.
Turning for home Evan Williams newcomer Karashar was the only challenger and approaching the last it looked as though he was poised to take the race.
Unfortunately he took a sickening fall at the last, ending up wrapped round one of the fence poles and handing the race to the favourite, who won by 19 lengths.
The screens were up for a while but to rapturous applause he was on his feet and walking back.
100/1 shot Galley Slave took second and Hyper Viper held on for third.
14:25 Well an incident packed opening race here at Market Rasen.
On the way to the start Princess Shirl unshipped Barry Keniry following which a comical pursuit with men waving flags ensued. The horse was caught and took part in the rcae which does seem pointless as she ended up being pulled up.
One who did not take part was Young Owen. Reluctant to go onto the course he was even more reluctant to start and the starter lost patience and withdrew him.
When the race did get underway we lost two at the first fence, Mendip Dane and Moon Phase.
In the race itself Jalamid set the pace tracked by General Alarm. The well backed favourite Coronado’s Gold was happy to settle mid-div.
Turning for home it turned into a three horse race with Dancewiththestars battling with Bolton Hall, who had run into contention at the end of the back straight. These two being tracked by the favourite.
Bolton Hall was the first to crack and coming to the last the favourite, under Robert Thornton, made his final decisive move and it was race over. The favourite winning by seven lengths and the rest of the field strung out across Lincolnshire
13:30 I have a feeling of deja vu here - like Leicester yesterday evening there is some sunshine but there are also some nasty looking grey clouds and a stiff breeze.
09:20 A few non-runners to set us off. Details on the right.
