16:22 That's it from a miserable Lingfield and being honest the weather reflects the quality of this afternoons racing, although we were treated to some cracking finishes.
From a dreak Lingfield a very good evening.
16:16 In the closing bumper, the Burstow Intermediate Open NH Flat race over 2 miles, Chilli Rose was sent off the hot, 8/15, favourite.
However Alan King’s seeming hot shot found Henrietta Knight’s Cashpoint was too hot and the favourite had to settle for second best.
Of course the story is not that simple. The front two were held up for most of the contest and when the pace picked up they met contrasting fortunes. The winner had a clear run on the outside, whilst the favourite was boxed in when needing a clear run.
Cashpoint hit the front a furlong from home and although closing in the final stages Chilli Rose had been left too much to do.
Had the favourite had a clear run then the result would, more than likely, have been different.
Third placed Alwaysonthemove was another who had been settled in rear and after running on turning for home came home one paced.
15:45 Our final race over obstacles was the 2 mile Copthorne Handicap Hurdle.
Musashi set the pace in the contest, with the favourite War Footing settled in second spot.
That was the position until the 5th where War Footing jumped into the lead and Musashi sulked at being overtaken and soon dropped out of contention.
War Footing’s effort in front also turned out to be short lived, as after jumping the second last in front he also went into reverse.
This left AP McCoy on Stratford Stroller in front although coming to the last his lead looked to be precarious with Lepido, Just Beware and We’re Delighted all looking likely challengers.
As the started up the run-in Stratford Stroller looked to be in real trouble as Lepido launched a strong challenge.
Had virtually any other jockey been on Stratford Stroller it may well have been a case of race over but McCoy does not know when he is beaten. Asking for a final effort he squeezed enough out of Stratford Stroller to hold off Lepido’s challenge to win by three-parts of a length. Giving a double for McCoy and trainer Jonjo O'Neill.
Just Beware took third.
15:18 Our third chase, the T Frost Bawtry Racing Saddlers Handicap Chase over 2m, saw another incident packed chase.
Green Gamble set off in front, pursued by Huguenot.
The first drama was at the first when Charlie Poste was in troubls as the tack broke on Pilgrims Lane after which point he was officially “pulled up” although it was another very painful mile before Poste was able to bring his mount to a stop.
Meanwhile Green Gamble and Huguenot battled it out for the lead before Green Gamble tired after the sixth, leaving Huguenot in the lead, with Vinmix De Bessy the challenger.
The favourite Zorro De La Vega, was settled almost last by Charlie Huxley before making progress.
Three out it looked to be between Huguenot, Vinmix De Bessy and Zorro De La Vega who was looking best of all.
They were only the three in contention two out but Zorro De La Vega slipped on landing, giving Huxley no chance to stay on board.
Huguenot put in the better jump and had a clear lead coming to the last with Vinmix De Bessy looking beaten.
However on the run-in Joshua Moore asked Vinmix De Bessy for a final effort and the grey ran on to grab the spoils on the line.
14:47 Another eventful chase with the “incident” happening at the 9th where half the field managed to jink either left or right. The one who came off worse was Millenium Mag who ran into the back of Count The Cost and almost came down.
Jamie Moore then, wisely, pulled him up.
Coast Of Malabar looked to be the likely winner, having run in snatches, but finally taking the lead two out, with Pipers legend and the favourite Poncha Train looking to be the rivals.
However the challenge to the leader eventually came from an unexpected source. Winning Show had been stone last and even tailed off turning for home. Colin Bolger then found the turbo-charge button and passed all his rivals to come home a comfortable 3¼ winner.
14:27 The going on the chase course is now Good
14:26 Race four is the New Chapel Handicap Chase over the extended 2½ miles.
Again no real positives or negatives in the ring.
14:15 Sonowyouno followed up his recent Aintree victory with a handy win here at Lingfield under champion jockey AP McCoy.
One has to feel some sympathy for Emperor Concerto who set out to make all, a position held until the final flight.
Indeed Emperor Concerto only just held onto the runners-up spot
As Ashleys Lad came with a late rattle, having been settled nearer last that first early doors.
Divi was settled in second spot before tiring on the turn for home, eventually coming home fourth.
Good For Blue was good for nothing and only beat tired horses home having been last most of the contest.
13:53 Back to the smaller obstacles for race three, the EBF National Hunt Novices Hurdle over the extended 2m 3f.
Eleven face the starter.
13:50 Another good finish in which Brimham Boy put in a brave performance - but was done in the closing stages by Dusk, giving another result for the layers.
Stockton Flyer set the initial pace until Brimham Boy hit the front at the third. The favourite, Absolute Shambles, was with the leaders.
There was little change throughout the contest with the race developing half a mile from home.
Rojabaa did make some progress but then dropped out and was pulled up. Dusk, who had been settled fourth before running on emerged as the challenger.
Stockton Flyer was in with a chance before making a mistake two out, the same fence at which Hobbs Dream fell.
Dusk hit the front at the last and it looked race over but Brimham Boy fought back and looked as though he could hit the front again. However half a furlong out Dusk put in one last effort and the tired Brimham Boy could not respond.
13:26 Race two is the Ashurst Wood Novices’ Handicap Chase over three miles in which six face the starter.
No mega positives or negatives in the parade ring. The filly Hobbs Dream was having a good look around and Stockton Flyer is a huge horse.
13:15 Well if the rest of the finishes are as exciting as this one we are in for a cracking afternoon.
Veras Joy set off in front but five furlongs from home she went out like a light and was pulled up. In the early stages she was kept company by Etain but her jumping was sketchy and it was more a case of when, not if, she would fall. As it happened her race ended at the third, both horse and rider were OK.
Vera’s Joy pulling up left Queen Poline in front and the favourite, Megasue, made progress to join her up front, having been settled mid-division in the early stages.
Alasi was another making eye-catching progress turning for home and those three looked destined to fight out the finish.
Megasue hit the front two out as Alasi continued to make good progress.
Megasue led over the last and a battle then ensued up the run-in with Alasi cutting down the lead with every stride.
The pair crossed the line locked together and it took judge Felix Wheeler a while to award the contest to Alasi.
12:51 Our opening contest is the Marsh Green Mares’ Novices Hurdle over the extended 2 miles.
Fourteen face the starter and AP McCoy who was booked to ride the non-runner, Wild Rhubarb, now rides Theft – stealing the ride from Felix De Giles.
Most of them looked like the weather although Queen Poline and Behest were both shaking their heads like rockers and Little Roxy was slightly on her toes.
