Racing Live - Lingfield Park 7th February 2009

16:54 That's all from Lingfield our next coverage will be at the mercy of the weather Gods.

Good evening

16:49 A five furlong sprint for our final contest but not much of a betting prospect with Flamsteed sent off the 2/9 favourite and winning as such an odds-on favourite should do.

Not much else to say about the race really.

16:40 Flamsteed is a very short priced favourite for the finale.

16:36 News from the Stewards Room. Pat Cosgrave picked up a three day careless riding ban for his ride on Fantasy Ride.

16:17 Down to seven furlongs for our penultimate race with only five going to post.

Strabinios King, who has been called some unflattering names was sent off the 6/4 favourite.

Set off in front it looked as though he would be an all the way winner.

However as they came down the home straight his rivals were steadfastly closing the gap and the distress signals were coming from the leader.

Gallantry
and Compton’s Eleven, who had been settled in last place, both came with ratthling late runs to head the favourite inside the final half furlong.

Another disappointing run from the favourite.

15:44 It is not very often that a punter stands to win over £2m on an all weather race at Lingfield but that was the situation in our feature race.

The 1¼ mile handicap happened to be the Tote scoop6 bonus contest and last weeks winners stood to win a shade over £2.4m had Lady Jane Digby won the race.

John Terry set the initial pace with Lady Jane Digby tracking the leader.
Turning for home John Terry dropped out having run his race and Philatelist joined Lady Jane Digby in front.

A furlong and a half out Lady Jane Digby looked beaten, leaving Philatelist in front.

Unfortunately Philatelist was unable to stamp his authority as Ace Of Heart and Formation came powering past with the line coming just in time for the latter.

The grey Baylini seemed to come from absolutely nowhere to deny Philatelist third place.

15:18 The second division of the 1m 4f handicap was more conventional than the first division.

Steady Gaze set the pace but was swamped as they turned for home.

Prince Charlemagne
ran on to take the contest for Gary Moore under Fergus Sweeney.

14:36 Not  the most exciting 1m 4f handicap for our fourth race and some interesting betting.

Insignia was a big drifter whilst Itsawindup was well supported as was Looter, with Fantasy Ride sent of the favourite.

It was a strangely run race with Just Serenade setting the pace.

As they turned for home the front runner was joined by Itsawindup and, briefly it looked like gamble won.

Then the entire complexion of the race changed with several of the contenders coming with late runs.

The favourite Fantasy Ride swept past the leader and looked to be the likely winner, however a gap appeared on the far side and Martin Dwyer on Gay Kelleway’s Shenandoah Girl took fill advantage and came with a well timed run to grab the race on the line.

14:23 Insignia is drifting like the Marie Celeste in our next 11/4 out to 9/2 and 6/1 on Betfair

13:57 On paper our third contest was a sprint, in reality it was a crawl in the early stages with the pace only coming in the final stages.

The first half was run at a sedate pace, set by Storey Hill, followed by Mutamared, looking for a five timer, and Thoughtsofstardom.

As they turned for home, Storey Hill still had the lead but Neil Callan bought Mutamared out and launched his challenge and the race was soon over as a contest.

Chjimes, who was weak in the market, failed to take advantage of a gap alongside the far rail – it will be interesting to hear Tom Queally’s observations.

It was left to Qadar to be the challenger, but he was never a serious threat.

It was a case of job done for the winner.

13:30 A mile claimer for our second race and one of those classic commentary moments from Richard Hoiles.

Whotsit
came from way back in the home straight to pass nearly all his rivals, prompting the immortal lines, “what’s that, Whotsit, that’s what.”

In the process the Amy Weaver trained gelding sprung a massive 40/1 shock, defeating favourite Desert Bump on the line.

Indeed it could be argued Desert Bump was a lucky leader  as the Jamie Osborne pair of Special Bond and Precocious Air did each other no favours. Osborne’s third runner Michelle was well backed but a right madam going down and going into the stalls.

She was also green in the early stages, however once the penny dropped she did run on well in the later stages.

12:53 An interesting mile maiden to get us underway with some interesting newcomers. None more so than Willie Haggas’ Mutamaashi, who held a Derby entry, although no longer does as he has been gelded.

Sent off the 9/4 favourite Mutamaashi won the race impressively. Settled in about fourth or fifth throughout Liam Jones bought him through to the lead as they turned for home.

Eastern Aria set the pace but swung wide turning for home, throwing away a significant amount of ground and Greg Fairley did well to get the filly back into second place. This was her first run and I have no doubt she will soon be visiting the winners enclosure.

Monaco Dream ran on to take third spot.

Ettrick Mill, who was with the pace throughout, took fourth place.

12:25 So Blissful has attracted support in the opener
