5:40 That's it from a very hot Lingfield - so hot they actually ran out of bottled water.

5:30 At the risk of being accused of being sexist the finale was a typical ladies race with a muddling pace and odd tactics.

Ecentually it was Carlitos Spirit under Emily Jones who came from the pack to take victory by 1 1/2 lengths.

5:00 A useful little winner in the six furlong sprint with Brassini coming from the pack to leave his rivals standing under a well timed ride from Alan Munro.

In doing so he easily beat the best backed horse of the day, Asian Power, who looked one paced in second an ever increasing 3½ lengths behind in second.

Asian Power opened at 8/1 and was sent off the 7/2 favourite.

4:25 Back to the round course for a maiden stakes.

One of those races where the betting was no help with a tightly packed market.

Vinces under Frankie Dettori was happy to set the pace and it proved to be a good move as he was never headed.

For most of the race his lead was only a couple of lengths, once in the home straight he opened up a decent lead and the only horse looking likely to erode the lead was Eve Johnson Houghton’s Kiho who came from the bunch with a decent run but, in truth it was never going to threaten the leader.

King Of Pentacles took third place.

The winner is lightly raced and I suspect this will not be his only visit to the winners enclosure.

3:50 Onto the straight course for the next and a five furlong fillies sprint, where the French raider Sabana Perdida was sent off the well backed 5/2 favourite.

Verba set the pace well attended by Salsa Steps and Kylayne with the favourites pilot happy to tuck in behind.

Come the two furlong pole and a typical French run was unleashed as the favourite came out to make her challenge, which proved to be decisive, taking victory by 1¾ lengths from the fast finishing Verba, who seemed to find here second wind.

3:20 In truth a very disappointing Derby trial and I will eat my proverbial hat if we have seen the Derby winner here at Lingfield this  afternoon.

Arguably the race was devalued by the defection of the Derby second favourite Curtain Call – due to concerns about the going.

The pace, or what pace there was, was set by Aiden O’Brien’s Alessandro Volta who had opened favourite but was sent off second best due to strong support for the Goldophin runner Campanologist.

It was widely assumed that O’Briens second string King Of Rome had been put in the race as a pace setter.

In the home straight  Frankie Dettori launched a challenge on Campanologist, who was running further than she has ever run before.

At the same time Alessandro Volta started running very green, I’m not sure if it was the equine equivalent of a hot flush but she did not look happy for a while and it looked as though the gamble would be delivered.

However approaching the final furlong it looked as though Campanologist was beginning to run on empty whist the O’Brien runner seemed to get her second wind. The view that Campanologist will be better at 1m 2f rather than 1m 4f was confirmed by Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford who said the colt will more likely be aimed at the French Derby.

Oddly enough the supposed pace setter, King Of Rome, was running on like a sprinter at the end and eventually denied the Godolphin runner second spot.

Bookmakers were unimpressed with the winner leaving him at 20/1 for the Classic.

2:50 Not for the first time the Lingfield Oaks trial threw up a strange result with the 10/1 shot Miracle Seeker making all to take the prize from the fast finishing Look Here.

The cynics would say the result was a miracle and the winner is 33/1 for the fillies classic.

It has to be said the field did not set off at any great pace and it could be argued the weather may have had some impact on the outcome as all the fillies were looking warm in the parade ring.

Disappointment of the race was the Irish raider Ice Queen from the O’Brien camp. Settled mid division she was last turning from home. She flattered to deceive three out, launching a brief challenge. There must be a question mark as to whether 1½ miles is too far for her.

2:20 Well no surprises in the first at the Brian Meehan trained odds-on favourite Red Rocks took a pillar to post victory under joint champion jockey Jamie Spencer.

Even though the final winning margins were close the favourite never looked to be in any real danger

Many Volumes from the Henry Cecil yard caught the eye in second.

Disappointment of the race was Al Shemali who flattered to deceive coming into the home straight but never looked to be a danger.

1:30 Good afternoon from a very warm and sunny Lingdfield on classic trials day.

Quite a few non-runners this afternoon, including the current Derby second favourite, Curtain Call in the Derby trial.
