Racing Live - Leicester 24th February 2009

17:14 That's it from Leicester this afternoon. Nothing really caught the eye, although I suppose Song Of Songs could have some potential.

Our next live coverage will be from Thurles on Thursday.

Until then good afternoon.

17:07 When you have a tight finish in which one horse is being ridden by a five pound claimer and the other by AP McCoy then there will be some inevitability in the result.

Indeed McCoy’s mount Matcho Pierji did prevail but only by half a length and full credit to David Cullinane who was not fazed by a battle with the champ.

Thedreamistillalive  set the pace but never had a big lead on his rivals. Nelson and Kercabellec made sure the leader was not able to dictate at will.

The filly and eventual runner up Tarabaloo was handy throughout, whilst McCoy was riding a typical tactical race.

Three out it was a very close affair with Thedreamstillalive, Matcho Pierji, Nelso and Tarabaloo all line abreast in front.

Coming to the second last Tarabaloo had the lead but the champ was tracking the fillies every move.

The pair forged well clear and the filly was still in front as they jumped the last. McCoy had to work hard on Matcho Pierji and the pair did come close together with McCoys mount getting his head in front in the final 50 yards.

Nelson held off a late run from I’m A Legend to claim third spot.

16:34 A Hunters’ Chase over 2m 7f for our penultimate race.

An interesting finish with stablemates Gentle George and Oopsmylord battling up the home straight, the latter prevailing by ¾ length.

One cannot help but feel sorry for Gentle George, with the pace and leading from the seventh, he looked beaten three out before rallying again between the final two fences.

We’re Confused was in with every chance as they turned for home, another front running performer, but when the battle commenced did not have enough left in the locker.

16:04 Another 2m 7f contest, only five runners with the defection of Jaunty Flight.

This time we did witness an all the way victory as Lightning Strike, the odds-on favourite, never looked to be in any real danger and he came home recording an eased five length victor.

Rightway Star and Elbow Lane did keep the favourite company in the early stages but Rightway Star was sending out the distress signals by half way and eventually pulled up before four out.

As they turned for home Backboard, who had been settled last, ran on to take second spot as Qualypso D’Allier began to tire.

Lightning Strike had a huge lead at the last and was heavily eased by Aiden Coleman in the run-in belying the  winning distance. Backboard took the runners-up spot and Elbow Lane rallied late to grab third spot.

15:34 A slight drop in trip for our third, an extended 2m 4f, with fourteen going to post.

Another attempt at a front running performance , this time from Macomoto who led from flag fall until the second last, where he was done for speed by Donald Will Do and Team Chaser.

The former had been well backed and looked as though he was going to be beaten by Team Chaser but he ran on again to record a 1¼ length victory.

The front pair came home 29 lengths ahead of the front running Macomoto.

Apocalozzo was a disappointing favourite, in with every chance but some scrappy jumping did little to help his cause and  he eventually came home fourth.

Instant Shot’s race ended when he fell at the second, whilst the filly, Simple Glory, unseated at the 9th

15:07 This is a game of contrasts from a four runner 2m chase to a seventeen runner 2m 7f chase.

It turned out to be an interesting race with the field very well bunched for most of the contest.

Sharp Belline, Junctiontwentyfour and Extra Bold were all to the fore, soon to be joined by Brumous.

Extra Bold fell at the 11th as Syncopated Rhythm joined the leading group.

At the 12th Walton Way departed (both horses and jockeys were OK).

By the time they reached the end of the back straight there were only two up front,

Junctiontwentyfour and Ballyvaden. These two were well clear of Mr Big and All Sonsilver in second and third. The other early front runners had faded.

Entering the home straight Mr Big had run-on to join the front pair by the second last.

Between the last two the race was decided as Junctiontwentyfour finally tired, Ballyvadden ran on like a fresh horse and Mr Big Took second spot.

All safely over the last Ballyvadden was eventually eased to record a 25 length victory. Mr Big came home second and Ya I Know, who appeared from nowhere ran on to deny Junctiontwentyfour third spot.

14:42 Well I may have tipped up Extra Bold but looking at the runners in the parade ring Sharp Belline catches the eye.

14:31 Well the opener, over 2m is one of those races where it is hard to write an interesting report as it was one of those races where, barring an accident, the result was never in doubt.

All that needs to be said is Song Of Songs won without even breaking sweat.

Midnight Diamond set the early pace, eventually fading to come home last. Double The Trouble took up the running half was but all the time the favourite and Iffy were happy to track those in front.

In the home straight Iffy had the lead but Song Of Songs was alongside, McCoy having not moved a muscle. To the casual observer it looked as though there was a potential upset on the cards. In reality there was no chance.

The pair jumped the last alongside one another but in the run in McCoy loosened the reigns and Song Of Songs ran on.

Job done.

14:10 The betting has the opener as a one horse race with Song Of Songs a very short odds-on favourite. Looking at them in the parade ring it also looks to be a one horse race, the favourite looks great.

14:00 Another non-runner, Jaunty Flight has a touch of colic and is out of the 3:50.
