Racing Live - Kempton 7th January 2009

16:50 Well that’s it from Kempton Park, a small crowd for a meeting originally scheduled as an evening meeting. It will be interesting to see how many turn up for the 6:20.

Not sure where our next coverage it, keep an eye on the News page.

From  chilly Kempton Park good evening.

16:44
A mile for our finale and right until the final strides it looked as though Hayley Turner was going to have a quickfire double on the front running Andean Margin.

Setting off with a good lead it looked as though she was going to be swamped in the home straight but a quick kick and she was soon clear.

However George Baker on Blaise Tower wanted to spoil the party and launching the favourite inside the final furlong he ran on to claim victory by a head on the line.

16:13 Our feature race of the afternoon was another seven furlong contest, with only six runners.

Last week Hayley Turner won her 100th race in 2008. Today she started on the path to reach the target in 2009.

Aeroplane
was sent off the 2/1 favourite and Hayley Turner settled the favourite in last place in the early stages, as Mark Johnston’s My Gacho set the early pace.

It must be said the pace wasn’t that strong and it wasn’t long before Abbondanza took up the running.

Meanwhile Aeroplane and the other well backed runner Bonus were still near the rear.
As often happens all the action was in the final stages and 1½ furlongs from home all the runners, bar My Gacho , were in line.

However Hayley had Aeroplane alongside the far rail and she drove him really hard to claim a 1¼ length victory from Bonus – making it a good 1-2 for the punters.

Nezami was a further 1¼ lengths back in third.

So that is one down and another ninety-nine to go to beat last years record.

15:44 Our longest race of the afternoon, a two mile handicap, where the naughty Wine ‘N Dine was sent off the 6/4 favourite.

A furlong out it looked as though the shenanigans in the parade ring may have cost the favourite dear as he was battling to get past Salute, who had taken the lead four out.

Eventually Eddie Ahern persuaded the favourite to get his head in front and eventually came home the three-quarter length winner, with Salute taking the runners-up spot.
Greenwich Meantime took third spot.

Anfield Road was a well backed second favourite and set the early pace before dropping out badly to finish a tailed off last. I have just hear an announcement over the PA inviting his trainer to visit the stewards for a chat – those weren’t the exact words but that was the gist.

15:34 Wine 'N Dine has just had a hissy fit in the parade ring - demolishing the rail and unshipping Eddie Ahern.

15:16 It is only just after three but the floodlights are on.

Race three was out biggest field of the afternoon, thirteen runners over 7f and a handicap to boot.

The early pace was set by Sharps Gold but unsurprisingly the front runner was nowhere to be seen come the final stages.

Also with the pace, and a runner that stayed in contention somewhat longer, was Mr Skipiton who was sweating profusely despite the cold weather.

As they crossed the line I am sure the handicapper must have allowed himself a satisfied smile as we witnessed a blanket finish.

The spoils went to Street Power, who had tracked the early leaders before leading two out.

However victory was not easily won as his rivals were bearing down on him. The delightfully named Mr Chocolate Drop was a neck back in second, with the running-on grey Sarah’s Art a head further back in third place. A fraction behind the grey was the favourite Thabaat and just behind him was the friendless in the market Guildenstern.

14:45  Let’s set the scene here. The crowd is small, even smaller than at Southwell yesterday. The water feature and lakes are both frozen.

However it does feel decidedly warmer than it was yesterday, a balmy plus one.

14:40
Well had it been a five furlong race my tip may have won the race, sadly it was a seven furlong contest and he came home last.

Jewelled Dagger did set off in front and as they turned for home he had a reasonable three length lead.

However, two out, he was challenged on both sides. The favourite Desert Dreamer on his right and Electric Warrior on his left.

It looked as though a good battle was in store but Richard Kingscote drove the favourite on for a 2¼ length victory over Electric Dreamer

Sofia’s Star ran on for third, whilst the somewhat green Dressed To Dance eventually got the idea of what was required and ran on  for fourth, but it was too little too late.

14:25 A seven furlong claimer for our second event. Nothing really stands out in the parade ring.

I did fancy Jewelled Dagger before racing - I will still go with him even though he looked a tad lethargic in the ring.

14:10 Well we finally get underway with a 6f sprint, ironically looking at the screen here in the press room it is snowing at Wolverhampton – I hope we have not been delayed for nothing.

Towy Valley and Diamond Twister set the pace, with the favourite Five Star Junior hot on their heels.

The pair held the lead until the favourite ran on two out, taking up the running on well. The challenge came, however, from Princess Cagliari who ran on really well, having been settled mid-div throughout.

Diamond Twister held on for third but the other front runner tailed off to come home last, even beating Valid Point who ran like a dog.

13:16 Another non-runner in the shape of Zuwaar (travel problems) in the 3:25

12:40 Good afternoon from Kempton where racing has been put back ten minutes to even out the gaps caused by cancellations elsewhere.

The going is standard and we currently have five non-runners, details on the right.
