Racing Live - Kempton 17th September 2008

21:36 Well that's it from our double header at Sandown and Kempton.

Thirteen races - some good horses and a few shock results as well.

It is actually very chilly now and I am looking forward to the warmth of my car.

From Kempton goodnight.

21:25 Well after saying the getting out stakes here at Kempton was easier than Sandown’s earlier on, we ended up having another shock result with the 25/1 outsider Miss Serena taking the finale, with Micky Fenton defying a 2lb overweight.

The favourite Borrowdale made a brave attempt to make all under Shane Kelly and he held onto the lead until a furlong from home when the winner swooped.

The earlier exertions took their toll as Borrowdale faded with the running on The Composer crossing the line almost in unison.

It took judge Di Clarke a while to give the runners up spot to The Composer.

21:02 An easier getting out stakes than at Sandown earlier today.

Borrowdale has had problems getting his head in front but his recent performances in defeat have been good.  The distance is no problem and this drop in class should give him his best chance of winning.

20:58 Another race for favourite backers in the shape of Priti Fabulous under Jamie Spencer.

The field were taken along by Silent Master (no surprise for a Mark Johnston horse) and Gone Fast.

This pair were tracked by Minus Fiveteen and the eventual winner.

Spencer held the rail on the home turn, closely tracking the leader. When the rail disappeared by the inner turn Spencer made his move and took the lead in a matter of strides. Minus Fiveteen went with him whilst the two front runners faded.

Also running on at the end was Mujaadel who took the runners up spot, however had he not missed the start badly he may well have won the race.

20:31 A very tight little handicap next.

Bluejain has been in and out form wise but the best form has come on this surface, the draw does not help though.

Silent Master is a front running Polytrack lover and this may be his ideal trip.

Priti Fabulous another course winner back to her favoured surface.

Hard to decide between the three but I am going to go with Bluejain at the prices, although I would not be surprised if Silent Master took this one.

20:24 Back to seven furlongs for our fifth race and an easy winner in the shape of Kings Wonder trained by William Muir and ridden by Martin Dwyer.

Glenridding was the pacesetter although the winner was always with him until going for home three out. Onenightinlisbon ran on into second two out and then had to hold off a late challenge by bottom weight Lawton.

The time was particularly good and close to the course record.

20:06 My original choice in the next, Beauchamp Wizard is a non-runner. Without him this looks a tricky handicap.

Lawton is entitled to improve off a low weight. At the other end of the weights Glenridding is a bold front runner who seems to be liking the surface.

Kings Wonder second in his last two races could take on Glenridding as the front runner and they may not do each other any favours.

On that basis I will stick with the bottom weight Lawton.

19:56 Another mile and a half contest. There was no great pace for most of the race shown by the winning time being some two seconds slower than the previous race.

Split The Wind set the pace, tracked by Oasis Sun, with Garafena and Fateful Attraction tracking the two leaders.

It wasn’t until they began to turn for home that the pace picked up.

Split The Wind held the lead until the furlong marker where he was attacked on both sides with Oasis Sun coming on his left and the grey Just Intersky on his right with Split The Wind fading quickly.

Oasis Sun under the male Andrea Alzeni won that battle.

Formidable Guest ran on to take third, although arguably Adam Kirby could have launched his challenge earlier.

19:37 Not very original but the next contest will in all likelihood go to one of the two improving fillies who are likely to head the betting.

Formidable Guest certainly relished being upped to this distance last time out and she carries a six pound penalty for her troubles. It is a big penalty and she will need to improve but now she seems to have found her distance she could get the double.

Her main rival is the other runner carrying a six pound penalty Shraayef. She is stepping up a furlong tonight but that should suit. She is unexposed and could well improve again.
I can’t decide between the two and will have a small wager on both.

19:26 Well I said if the compliant Buddhist Monk turned up he would hack up and, guess what, he did.

The early signs were not too good as he was settled nearer last than first.

It was Brexca who set the pace along with Cherokee Star.

The pair were still together turning for home but once they turned for home Adam Kirby kicked

Brexca into the lead and it looked to be a decisive lead with Isabelonabicycle the follower.

However Buddhist Monk was on a going day and Darren O’Donohoe bought him to the stand side and launched him on a run two out. Today he responded to his jockeys urgings and a furlong out he launched into the lead and won easily. So well it took almost half a circuit to pull him up.

Isabelonabicycle took the runners up spot with Brexca taking third.

19:05 A horrendous Class 6 contest next and another of those races where you need to find the least worse. I think it comes down to two Buddhist Monk and Brexca.

However the former was turned over at odds of 1/5 at Hamilton last time out and is clearly unreliable, if the reliable version turns up tonight he should win – but it would take a great leap of faith to lay down your money on him.

Brexca is no world beater but he is consistent and the grey is capable of winning a race like this.

18:55 A six furlong nursery for our second contest and the handicapper may have to have a second look at the winner Ray Of Joy who won easily by 3¾ lengths under Jimmy Quinn.

The charge was led by Going Time who set a reasonable pace with the winner happy to track a couple of lengths behind along with Val De Flores  and Pressed For Time.

Coming for home Jimmy Quinn asked Ray Of Joy to make a move and the filly responded well quickly putting daylight between herself and her rivals.

Pressed For Time, running on well, looked booked for the runners up spot but Pacific Bay was launched with an even later run on the stand side and denied Pressed For Time by a neck.

The favourite, Daily Double, was very disappointing and tailed in last.

18:25 A mile contest to get us under way with Kouloura sent off the favourite.

Kaloni and Wake Me Now set the pace, running side by side until just before the two furlong marker.

As they passed the two marker Something Perfect, who did not look that impressive in the parade ring, came from the pack to join Kaloni up front, with Wake Me Now Fading.

The favourite was asked for a run two out and immediately hung strongly to the left, into the whip, and losing any chance of victory.

Something Perfect and Kaloni battled to the line with Something Perfect grabbing victory on the line, the win all the more impressive considering the saddle slipped.

17:40 Good evening from Kempton where I have made the dash from Sandown with plenty of time to spare.

The weather is overcast and the going Standard.

We have seven non-runners, details on the right and we get going at 6:20.
