Racing Live - Huntingdon 19th November 2009

16:02 That’s it from a windy Huntingdon. The main attraction was Dave’s Dream’s debut over the larger obstacles which was workmanlike rather than impressive.

The equine star, for me, was The Laodicean in the bumper who looks an interesting type.

Tomorrow we are at Ascot, meanwhile from Huntingdon a very good evening.

15:59 A tricky bumper to conclude and a race the rider of Blakeneys Pet, whose saddle slipped and he had a few anxious moments trying to control his mount.

Ironically he was the only runner with racecourse experience.

Before Blakeneys Pet ran away with his rider it was Crazy Gracie who set the pace, although it has to be said the field were very well bunched for most of the contest.

Alan King’s runner, The Loadicean, had been settled mid-division but as they turned for home Wayne Hutchinson asked him for an effort and the horse responded really well. By the time they were in the home straight it was a case of race over as he left his rivals looking a different, lesser, class. The official distance of six lengths being value for plenty more.

Mr Tallyman was making eye-catching progress in the closing stages to take the runners-up spot.

Nigel Twiston-Davies Acquisitive came home third, finally getting the hang of things in the closing stages, having been terribly green going to post.

15:30 Our finale is a 1¾ mile bumper, the EBF Junior Standard Open NH Flat Race, our largest field of the afternoon in which 16 line up and 15 of them are making their racecourse debuts.

15:28 Well if a horse ever deserved to lose a race it must be Canni Thinkaar and if a jockey has ever earned his riding fee it must be Jamie Moore on the aforementioned beast.

The odds on favourite was in second place when almost spread-eagling at the first, with Moore doing well to remain on board. He dropped back several places, leaving Wujood well clear.

A couple of flights later Canni Thinkaar was soon back tracking Wujood, with Mycean Prince also with the front pair.

Four out the favourite was in front and looking to be the easy winner, with only Mistress To No One looking to be any kind of threat as she emerged from the pack.

Canni Thinkaar made another slight mistake three out, giving  Mistress To No One a chance to mount a serious challenge.

They turned into the home straight well clear of their rivals.

The favourite was still in front two out and looked to have the measure of his rival, however he once again decided to completely mess up his jumping and once again Moore did very well to remain on board.

Moore managed to regain momentum as was again on terms at the last. Favourite backers held their collective breath as they came to the last and although not a perfect jump Canni Thinkaar did get over the other side in one piece.

A battle ensued up the run-in and all credit to the filly Mistress To No One in she fought all the way to the line, with Canni Thinkaar just holding on by half-a-length for, an arguably undeserved, victory.

15:00 The final race over obstacles this afternoon is the 2m 5f Racing UK Horseracing In Your Home Handicap Hurdle in which ten line up.

14:56 Another good result for favourite backers as the well backed Sea Cadet took the contest with ease under Rhys Flint.

Orfeo Conti set the pace, although it has to be said his jumping was, at best, iffy. Although it has to be said it wasn’t as bad as Digger Gets Lucky’s who was soon behind and finally made one mistake too many at the eighth, after which Liam Treadwell called it a day and pulled him up.

Orfeo Conti finally ceded the lead at the final ditch, four from home, where he made another mistake.

Dune Raider took up the running and had a good lead as they turned for home although Sea Cadet was closing fast.

Two out Orfeo Conti pulled up as Sea Cadet hit the front full of running. Another running on well in the closing stages was  Prof de L’Isle but he only managed to get within five lengths of the winner.

Dune Raider plugged on for third place as the field came home well strung out.

14:31 Next up is our longest race on the card, the three mile South African Pioneer Handicap Chase in which nine go to post.

14:30 Tony McCoy said "(Daves' Dream) will come on for the run and he jumped well. He slipped on the home bend and he may get further.

"Having said that he would do well in a two mile contest with a good pace at a course where he is better suited."

14:26 Our feature race of the afternoon saw a couple of decent hurdlers making their debuts over the larger obstacles.

Dave’s Dream was sent off the odds-on favourite whilst Numide attracted some late support.

They had differing fortunes in the race in which the pace was set by Matuhi and in which they were soon strung out in Indian file, with My Moment second, Dave’s Dream in third, Numide Fourth and Vogarth never in contention.

It was as they turned for home they order finall changed with My Moment taking up the running, followed by Dave’s Dream as Matuhbi dropped back to third. At this point Numide was tailing off and was at least twenty lengths behind the principals.

Approaching the second last My Moment had a slight lead but McCoy was tracking his every move on the favourite.

McCoy took Dave’s Dream into the lead at the last and it was race over as he hacked up the run-in to record a 4½ length victory over My Moment.

Matuhi was a further seventeen lengths behind, whist the disappointing Numide came home last, in his own time.

An adequate rather than inspirational debut from Dave’s Dream but it was a case of job done. Paddy Power were not overly impressed with the winner leaving him unchanged at 25/1 for the Arkle.

14:01 Our first chase for race four, the Kier Eastern Novices’ Chase, again over the extended two. Michel Flips misses the race, leaving five to face the starter.

13:59 A strange race this one with Nautical Approach being very popular in the ring, backed into joint favouritism, yet he was singularly unimpressive on the track. Tracking the leaders early on he soon dropped out of contention and was never a threat.

Murphy was the hare in this contest, although like far too many front runners was reeled in when it mattered.

Viable was the one who hit the front turning for home yet he wasn’t going to have it all his own way.

Approaching the last it was a four way go with Viable, Crosby Jemma, Mount Helicon and Laureate des Loges all in line.

The fence itself decided the race though. Viable put in a cracking jump, Crosby Jemma an OK jump, Mount Helicon an indifferent one and Laureate des Loges took a crashing fall. (Down for a long time but walked back OK)

There was a good battle on the run-in with Viable and Crosby Jemma battling away.

Viable
held on by a neck under an good ride from 17 year old Gina Andrews.

Three lengths behind the front pair was Mount Helicon.

13:31 Our third contest, the Huntingdon Handicap Hurdle, is like the two opening hurdles over the extended two miles. All thirteen face the starter.

13:29 Plenty of excitement before the race when one of three runners vying for favouritism, Wizard Of Odds , did everything possible not to go to the start and his rider / owner David Dunsdon did very well to get him to take part.

As a result he did drift in the betting before the off, whilst his market rivals Cheshire Prince and Ashammar shortened to go off 15/8 joint favourites.

Wizard Of Odds  almost did not start but he did consent to race and once running with the pack he seemed to settle.

Chinese Profit set the pace, with Savaronola and Ashammar tracking and Wizzard Of Odds and Cheshire Prince in the next rank.

As they turned for home it had come down to a three horse race with the top three in the betting battling it out in front.

Ashammar was leading on his debut but as they broached the home turn he went very wide under champion jockey AP McCoy and he lost so much ground he couldn’t win.

This handed the advantage to Cheshire Prince, albeit a narrow advantage as Wizard Of Odds was on his quarters.

Cheshire Prince put in the better jump at the final flight and pulled a couple of lengths clear. Wizard Of Odds tried to respond but did not have enough left in his locker after his earlier antics.

Cheshire Prince
came home the easy four length winner over his recalcitrant rival and it says a great deal about the opposition that despite his running wide Ashammar still managed to come home in third spot.

13:02 Race two is Division Two the Turf TV Betting Shop Service Novices’ Hurdle over the extended  two miles. This time we have two defectors, Laertes Cause and Rock ‘n’ Roller, leaving eight to take their chances.

A less motley set of runners in our second, the only negative was Savaronola who was a little bit on his toes. Otherwise the others were quite neutral.

12:54 Well there was a massive plunge on Sereth before the off, backed from 6/4 into 5/6 and favourite backers were not disappointed.

Wester Ross, Sereth and Reland set the pace and held that position until they turned for home, at which point Reland dropped out of the battle, only to be replaced by Lap Of Honour.

Sereth had the lead approaching the second last with his main market rival, Wester Ross, his main challenger.

The field were well bunched at the last but it was on the run-in that Sereth’s flat speed came to the fore and he pulled away from his rivals to record a 4½ length victory.

Wester Ross came home second, whilst Points Of View was not disgraced back in third place and is one who may well take a small race some time in the future.

12:31 With one exception the contenders for our opener are a motley looking bunch.

Despite the wind and it not being too hot Points Of View is already sweating heavily.

BA Dreamflight looks as though he has hit turbulence , he is bouncing about so much. Lap Of Honour and Gunslinger.

12:12 Just under half an hour to our opener, Division One the Turf TV Betting Shop Service Novices’ Hurdle over the extended  two miles. Farleigh House is a non-runner and ten face the starter.

11:40 Good morning from Huntingdon, where the weather is overcast but there is a very strong headwind as they come down the home straight - so watch out for some stamina sapping finishes to our races.

09:40 The non-runners are still trickling through, just keep an eye on the right and they will be updated as opten as possible.

08:54 We have the first non-runner of the day, as always details can be found on the right.
