21:14 That's it from Huntingdon where it stayed dry for us.
This was HUntingdon's last race before their summer break.
No such break for us as we will be at Southwell tomorrow ebening for more NH action. Until then good evening.
21:10 A report from the stewards into the fall of Sir Liam in the 7:50 apparently the horse put his foot in a rabbit run, which caused him to fall.
21:05 Unusually the longest race of the day was left to last with a 3m 2f handicap hurdle.
It turned out to be another one for the punters as the 11/8 favourite Bob ‘n’ You, who was a good winner at Market Rasen last week, came home the two length winner, despite making a Horlicks of the last flight, having been held up for most of the contest.
Even worse at the last was the grey Job One, probably out of contention who made an even bigger mess of the final flight with his jockey doing a very good impersonation of a rodeo rider before gravity finally won the day.
Bob ‘n’ You’s mistake at the last gave Ramvaswani a chance but the favourite had sufficient in hand to hold on.
Orchard King who led briefly from four out came home third.
20:38 A 3m Hunters’ Chase for our fifth contest and one of those winners that really concerns me.
Call me old fashioned but I want to see Hunters’ Chases contested by true hunters, not by retired championship horses who are then sent notionally hunting in order to farm these contests.
This evening’s contest featured Royal Auclair and Tikram – both winners at the Cheltenham Festival and both heading the betting in this contest.
It was one of the pair, Tikram, who took the race coming home the comfortable nine length winner, after being settled mid-division before running on in the closing stages. He took up the running from long time leader Oranger as they jumped three out, at the same time Royal Auclair came under pressure, having tracked the leaders.
Youlbesolucky had been with the pace and looked booked for the runners-up spot until being headed by the running on Little Rocker in the dying stages.
Although Tikram may go in the record books as being the winner of the race, for me the moral winner was the runner-up Little Rocker.
20:04 An extended 2m Novices’ hurdle for our fourth contest and another good result for favourite backers as Moment Present gave Noel Fehily a comeback win after returning from a layoff with painful kidney stones.
Settled mid-division the gelding made steady progress down the back straight as the long time leader Spilt The Wind began to tire, leaving long time second Makhzoon in front.
By two out Moment Present had joined Makhzoon up front and was soon in the lead.
Seattle Storm also began to make some eye catching progress and although running on well the favourite had his measure.
It was only Seattle Storm’s second run and he looks like a future winner.
Makhzoon held on for third spot.
There was an interesting incident down the back straight where Sir Liam fell on the flat without any obvious reason. Both horse and rider were OK.
19:35 Only three went to post for the 2 mile novices’ chase and the old adage of backing the outsider of three held true as Noticeable won the contest in a facile manner – having said the “outsider” was only 11/4.
Marsam was sent off the favourite and set the early pace, although he jumped left over the first couple of fences.
Noticeable, on his chase debut, settled in second place, with Sendani back in third, where he always stayed.
As they went out on the second circuit Noticeable took up the running and gradually pulled away as the contest progressed, eventually coming home 23 lengths clear.
19:11 As opposed to the opener where we had a well backed favourite, in our second contest (a 2m 4f handicap chase) we had an uneasy favourite in the shape of Dead Or Alive.
However unlike in the opener the favourite romped home by ten lengths.
Kirkos set off in front and attempted to make all, looking to have every chance until blundering at what would have been two out but turned out to be the last as the final fence was omitted.
However when he made the mistake Dead Or Alive was already on his quarters and he soon jumped into the lead. Indeed the favourite was running so well he would still have run even without Kirkos’s mistake.
Free Gift, who had been with the pace for the last mile failed to take advantage of the front runners mistake, coming home a length further back in third.
The final fence was omitted due to Tech Eagle breaking down as they approached the fence on the first circuit, unfortunately he had to be put down.
18:39 Right the opening contest was an extended 2m selling hurdle and let’s begin by dealing with the gamble of the day, Monsieur.
As mentioned previously he looked terrible in the parade ring and was even less impressive going down to the start, taking a very strong hold and expending plenty of energy in the process.
In the race itself he lived up to his terrible form figures, never in contention and never likely to bother the judge. Quite how or why the gamble developed we will never know.
In the race itself Bernabeu set the pace and was still leading, although about to be headed, when falling three out.
This left Bundle Up in front ridden by up and coming conditional Rhys Flint for his father John. He had been settled mid-division before making progress turning out of the back straight.
San Antonio and Mycean Prince were on the leaders heels but it was the latter who became the serious challenger.
Both Bundled Up and Mycean Prince were running on approaching two out and it was clear the contest would be between the pair.
At the last Bundled Up still had the advantage but Mycean Prince was still trying to close the gap. The pair had a good battle on the run-in but Bundled Up held on to win by a diminishing head.
Slo Mo Shun came home in third, 15 lengths behind the front pair, with San Antonio taking fourth.
18:09 No surprise the gamble on Monsieur has slowed down and he is available at 4/1 here in the ring.
I have to say he does not look much in the parade ring and, on looks alone, I would be loath to back him at 14/1 never mind 4/1.
17:44 Good evening from Ladies night at Huntingdon. We have just had a sharp shower but the sun is now out - fingers crossed it stays out for us.
We now have seven non-runners, details on the right.
12:43 There is a massive gamble developing on Monsieur in the opener. Available early doors at 25/1 money has been coming in all morning and the runner is now as short as 7/4, with a best priced 3/1 available.
11:33 And another out of the Hunters' Chase.
10:39 Two non-runners so far, both in the Hunters' Chase at 8:20.
08:50 After 10mm of overnight rain the going has eased to Good, Good to Firm in Places.
