Racing Live - Huntingdon 11th December 2008

15:32 That's it from Huntingdon, where the Peterborough Chase really was a highlight, producing a cracking finish.

Tomorrow we are off to Cheltenham for a couple of days high class racing. From Huntingdon a very good afternoon.

15:31 After a very long enquiry the result stands.

15:19 The finale may have been “only” a bumper but the finish proved to be very controversial.

First past the post was the favourite Ellen Tilley, ridden by Charlie Huxley. He did well to win the race as the winner was very green

However about a furlong from home it looked as though Charlie Huxley actually hit the challenging Vacario in the face with his whip.

Needless to say the stewards are taking a very close look.

There was only half a length between the pair as they crossed the line and Vacario was certainly checked when hit.

For the record, third past the post was Elegant Olive who got the best of a bob finish with Quelqu’un Comme Toi, who came with eye catching late progress.

14:52 Our sixth contest and the last over obstacles, was also the longest race of the day, in the shape of a 3m handicap chase.

They went 9/2 the field with Thai Vango having the honour of being the jolly.

After a muddling start where the lead changed hands several times, it was Ballyboley who eventually took up the running at the sixth fence, a position held until turning for home.

Top weight Prince Of Persia, held up for most of the contest, began to make eye catching progress down the back straight for the final time and by the time they entered the home straight had a clear lead.

Thai Vango was another who ran on late on but was never close enough to threaten the winner.

Teenando, for whom stamina is no problem, did not seem that keen in the later stages but did manage to take third place after being settled behind the leaders for most of the contest.

Snow Patrol was prominent in teh early stages but faded later on in the contest.

14:25 Back to the smaller obstacles for our fifth event, over an extended 2m 5f.

Once again we saw a very well backed favourite in the shape of Chaim, backed in from 7/2 to 2/1 on-course.

Backers would have needed nerves of steel as Dominic Elsworth sat the favourite stone last for all of the first circuit and a fair bit of the second circuit as well.

When asked to progress he did with some aplomb, cutting through his rivals like a knife through butter. Taking the lead approaching the last, the attempt to chase him home by Lady Pilot proved to be facile as the favourite came home by 2½ lengths. Prof de L’Isle was third, a further 2½ lengths back.

13:53 Well the big race, back in its traditional mid-week spot, attracted its most competitive field in years.

It turned out to be a cracking renewal and minutes before the “off” we had four co-favourites in the shape of Monet’s Garden, Natal, Lord Henry and My Way De Solzen. Although late money saw My Way De Solzen go off the 7/2 favourite.

Snoopy Loopy, who has been a revelation this season, set the pace to try and take the sting out of his opponents challenges and make the race a test of stamina.

One Cool Cookie kept him company in the early stages, with the enigmatic grey Monet’s Garden tracking in third place.

As they started the second circuit it was Snoopy Loopy and Monet’s Garden who shared the pace and the pair held the first two paces for the remainder of the race.

The jumped the final fence in unison, with Monet’s Garden putting in the better jump.

However there was more drama to come. At Huntingdon on the final circuit the field need to cross to the left to cross the line, which is between the open ditch and the enclosures.

Neither horse was moving over and it looked as though both were going to try and jump the open ditch.

Eventually, very late, they veered across and fought a dour battle to the line, with Monets Garden holding on by half-a-length.

Mister Mcgoldrick was five lengths further back in third.

Snoopy Loopy's second has earned him a 16/1 quote for the King George.

Of the other fancied runners, Natal unseated at the fifth, Lord Henry came home sixth and My Way was pulled up two out.

13:17 Back to the smaller obstacles for our third event, a two mile hurdle.

We saw a very well backed favourite in the shape of Oldrik who was backed in from 100/30 to 2/1.
Orpen Wide, as is his wont, set the pace but was headed as they turned for home.

Meanwhile Oldrik, who had been settled mid-division, made eyecatching progress down the back straight and came into the lead turning for home. The only challengers were the two white horses Pascha Bere and Argento Luna.

At the last Oldrik put in the better jump over Pascha Bere and ran on for a 3½ length victory.
The running on Argento Luna grabbed third place in the final stages.

The race was marred by the death Sally’s Dream who broke down between the final two flights. Also Spring Dream was taken off in the horse ambulance after injuring his near fore.

12:49 There was cheer for favourite backers in our second contest, a 2½ mile Mares’ Novice Chase.

According to the betting it was a two horse race with Shatabdi sent off the 4/6 favourite and Aimigayle at 11/4 with 16/1 bar the pair.

Over branch led for the first couple of fences until Aimigayle took up the running.
Kerriemuir Lass looked to be the main challenger until blundering and unseating Wilson Renwick at the 10th

With the departure of Kerriemuir Lass the only challenge to Aimigayle was the odds-on favourite.

Turning for home the pair were stride for stride, however at the second last the jolly put in a better jump to take up the running. Aimigayle was nothing but brave and tried to rally.

At the last Shatabdi extended his lead and although Aimigayle tried to rally again the favourite was never in any danger.

Cornerback made a horrible blunder at the second last and Davey Condon did a sterling job keeping the partnership in tact. This blunder handed third spot to Rate Of Knots, although it has to be said Rate Of Knots was looking the better of the pair anyway.

12:19 A competitive novices’ hurdle to get us under way.

We had an even money favourite in the shape of Tot Of The Nar, however he was only able to come off second best.

The party pooper was Pam Sly’s Circus Rose who went on to show her Fakenham win last month was no fluke.

The early, steady, pace was set by Quaystone Lady, a position held for a circuit.

The favourite took up the running, with apparent ease, three from home. However Circus Rose came out of the bunch and sat on the quarters of the favourite as they turned for home. The pair jumped the second last but Circus Rose made the better leap and began pulling away between the last two flights.

The race was put beyond any doubt when the favourite jumped to the left at the last.

Pam Sly had an added bonus when her Wistow came with a blistering run to claim third place in the final strides.

11:30 Good morning from Huntingdon, where the weather is sunny and the going is good to soft, good in places.

We currently have eight non-runners.

10:14 Racing goes ahead after the course passes a second inspection.

08:30 A second inspection is to be held at 10:00 after the initial 08:00 inspection proved to be inconclusive.
