Racing Live - Huntingdon 14th October 2008

17:12 That's all from Huntingdon this afternoon, apart from shower mid-afternoon the weather has been kind. Only small fields but some good racing nonetheless.

Our next live coverage will be from Kempton under floodlights tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile from Huntingdon good evening.

17:05 No obstacles to get in the way for our final race as it was a bumper, with only half a dozen runners.

Most of the race was fairly uneventful, with the runners progressing in Indian file. Hat trick seeking Tony McCoy set the pace on American World only to fade two out, the first of three leaders to fade as they came into the home straight.

Soon into the lead in the straight was the favourite Moscow Catch, who was settled in third for most of the contest.   Running on well the gelding won as he pleased.

Vacario took the runners-up spot, even though he ran a patchy race, running on after looking beaten a furlong out.

OK Katie who was settled last for the majority of the race ran on well towards the end, claiming third place.

16:38 Anything Jonjo O’Neill can do Nicky Henderson can do as well as he saddles his second winner of the afternoon, this time in the shape of the grey Scots Dragoon, who was either second or leading from start to finish.

Indeed it was two greys Scots Dragoon and the favourite Lyes Green who took them along until the favourite blundered at the eighth. He stayed on his feet but dropped back through the field.

Ocean Du Moulin became the challenger and harried the leader until the second last where he started to tire.

At this stage of the contest the favourite ran on again but the leader looked to have a comfortable lead. Indeed any form of contest approaching the last looked to be for the runners up spot. Ocean Du Moulin wasn’t out of the battle, however a hesitant jump at the last finally put pay to any challenge.

Commeration Day and the favourite battled it out on the run in but Commemeration Day had the stronger legs and beat the favourite by three lengths for the runners up spot.

16:42 There was no O’Neill / McCoy combo in this race, giving someone else a chance to win a prize.

Only five runners but it turned out to be a tight little affair, although it turned out to be a bold front running performance from Border Tale under Brian Hughes. The pace was not that frenetic, more a Sunday stroll than a brisk run.

Two out there were three with possible chances although it could be argued Moon Star was already beaten when he hit the second out.

The favourite, Hibiki, was still in with every chance if good enough, however he was not good enough.

Both the winner and runner-up were under pressure in the run in but the favourite was never going to catch the winner, who held on for  a length and a half victory.

Of the others, third place Elaala was third more by default than any effort on her part and Norborne  Bandit was either last or second last throughout.

15:42 A quick double on the card for the O’Neill / McCoy combination and at the shock price of 20/1.

It was another race where the leader set off too fact, this time in the shape of Three Thieves, but his attempt to steal the race was over by the end of the back straight.

Up front it was a very tight coming to the second last, with three in line, the odds-on favourite Billy Magern (a full brother to the classy Ollie Magern), Regal Quote and Sea Cliff.

It was three in line as they jumped the second last and pretty much the same approaching the final hurdle.

Of the three, the favourite was the first to throw in the towel.

The battle was between the O’Neill runner and Emma Lavelle’s Regal Quote but under strong driving from McCoy  the contest was effectively over, although the runner-up did not go down without a fight.

Those who back McCoy’s runners blind must be smiling.

15:10 Our first chase this afternoon was more notable for the poor jumping, having said that they only contrived to have one faller, which was Happily Ever After at the second last.

Although whether the mare would have had any say in the finish is debatable.

It was one of those funny races where one contender set off far too fast, this time in the shape of Inmate, who had a 25 length lead at one point, however as they completed their first circuit he was back to the field and in reverse.

The favourite Tempsford, under champion jockey Tony McCoy was hacking along with She’s Humble, initially for second and third place and then in the lead once Inmate was caught.

The pair were still locked together at the second last where it looked as though McCoy was prepared to send the favourite into the lead however he made a mistake and had to wait to mount his challenge, which came at the final fence.

Once in the lead the contest was over and the favourite came home by five lengths, easing, from She’s Humble.

14:45 and another non-runner in our next, Pharanto

14:38 Well a good start for favourite backers as the drifting 9/2 favourite Terramarique won by an easy nine lengths.

With the pace early on Marcus Foley took a breather as they went out on their second circuit before running on again at the end of the back straight and taking the lead easily as they turned for home.

Cee Cee Rider looked to be the challenger but the challenge soon faded as he dropped back through the field.

Markington , who had tracked the leaders for most of the race ran on to take the runners up spot.
Hasanpour ran on well to reward each way backers at a tasty 40/1.

14:03 Another non-runner Act Gold is out of the first - we suspect going but no confirmed reason yet.

13:42 Only small fields here today, with just 43 runners across the six race card. Small does not mean non-competitive however and some of the smaller fields look to be very competitive.

13:33 Good afternoon from Huntingdon where the weather is overcast but mild.

The going is Good to Firm and we have just the one non-runner so far.
