12:45 Good afternoon from a sunny Goodwood, where we now have eight non-runners, full details on the right.
13:49 Our opening contest is the 6f EBF Mel Wood “Celebration Of Life” Maiden Fillies’ Stakes for two-year-old fillies.
Eight of the ten runners are making their racecourse debuts and, frankly, looking at them in the parade ring it shows with several playing up.
The worse pair are Broken Belle and Elkmait, who are trying to rear and are getting very worked up.
Kalleidoscope has two handlers and she is doing her utmost to break free from them.
Slightly on their toes, by comparison, are Miss Dutee and Sheila’s Star.
Pick of the paddock is Richard Hannon’s Memory.
14:10 It was heart in mouth time for favourite backers as Memory was slowly away and looked green towards the rear.
Up front Atia set the pace with Apazine and Sheila’s Star also to the fore.
Two out the complexion of the race changed with Goodwood Treasure hitting the front to an almighty cheer as she is owned by a syndicate of Goodwood members.
At the same time Richard Hughes asked Memory for an effort. Initially her response was wayward but suddenly the penny dropped and when it did she flew into the lead making her rivals look static.
Once in front Goodwood Treasure was unable to respond and Memory came home a very comfortable 2¾ length winner, with Goodwood Treasure in second.
Third spot went to Eklmait, who made late progress from mid-division.
Sheila’s Star finished best of the front runners, taking fourth spot.
14:26 Another fillies’ contest for our second race, this time the Blue Square Height Of Fashion Stakes, a listed contest over a few yards short of 1¼ miles, better known as the Lupe Stakes.
Eight go to post, Gallic Star is the non-runner with a bruised foot.
What a contrast to the last race in the parade ring compared with our opener.
Some lovely looking fillies on display, a very slight negative for Thaahira who was getting just alittle bit warm and Bint Doyen was having a good look round.
Very hard to single out a positive but marginally better were Deidre and Pipette with an honourable mention for Wedding March.
14:49 That was what I call a “pinch me” race as I’m not sure I believe what I have seen with my own eyes.
We shall begin at the start where two runners missed the break, the favourite Wedding March and, more dramatically, Snow Fairy who seemed to take a false step and was well in arrears.
Wedding March was soon in the fray and after a furlong was up to third spot behind the front running Deidre and Pipette.
After another furlong Frankie Dettori had managed to get Wedding March into second spot, tracking Deidre as they swept right handed into the home straight.
Then, almost in an instant, Wedding March had dropped out of contention like a stone through water and was soon in last place.
Deidre still had the lead but a furlong out we had a new leader, none other than Snow Fairy, who must have waved her wand to pass all her rivals. Not only did she hit the front ,she did so in devastating fashion, coming home three lengths clear of her rivals.
Pipette took second spot with the front running Deidre coming home third, a neck separating the duo.
Mudaaraah, the Maktoum second string, was doing her best work in the closing stages to finish fourth.
The favourite come home well tailed off in last place.
14:58 Race three is our first handicap of the afternoon, the 1m 1f M-Real Handicap with nine runners, Missionaire and Paintball being the non-runners.
Soul Station and Beachfire are headshakers, Fame Is The Spur is slightly on her toes and Our Boy Barrington’shead carriage is so low he is almost scraping his nose on the floor.
15:00 I have not mentioned the food front yet. there is a chicken casserole on offer, although I went for the salad option of cold roast beef with a pasta salad and boiled potatoes.
15:23 A total contrast in style for race three as Richard Kingscote on Soul Station makes all to steal the race.
I say steal because it was a front running performance it was also tactically a good run as Kingscote injected some pace approaching two out and he opened up enough of a gap to enable him to keep the race.
It was a close run thing though as the favourite, Hypnotized, was in pursuit under Jamie Spencer and he was cutting down the lead with every stride.
The line came in time to enable Soul Station to record a fast diminishing neck victory.
Beachfiire, another doing best in the latter stages, came home third, five lengths behind the front duo.
Marsh Warbler and Our Boy Barrington were both with the pace early doors, only to fade badly in the closing stages coming home eighth and seventh respectively.
15:25 Next up is our feature race of the afternoon the bluesquare.com Cocked Hat Stakes, a listed race over 1m 3f.
Nine are taking part in this recognised Derby trial, although only Averroes, Kalypso King, Rashaad and Waseet hold a Derby entry.
15:34 The big (excuse the pun) negative from the parade ring is Eavesdropper, who was coltish.
Rashaad and Rewilding were both getting a little warm, but it is a hot afternoon and the Goodwood rule which says gentlemen must wear jackets also means I am getting quite warm too.
Simenon was a bit of a headshaker.
15:40 To make Snow Fairy's earlier win all the more impressive trainer Ed Dunlop has reported the filly had a shoe ripped off as she came out of the stalls.
15:59 WOW!!!!
Rewilding, who only joined Godolphin from Andre Fabre a couple of weeks ago, ran out the most impressive winner of the Cocked Hat stakes. Settled mid-division by Frankie Dettori he asked for an effort approaching two out and it was race over in a matter of strides as he swept clear, nothing able to go with him.
Prizefighting led the chasing group but all he could do is look at Dettori’s and Rewilding’s backsides pulling further away and the winner is probably better value than his official four length winning margin.
Apart from the winner, another who impressed was third placed Very Good Day from Mick Channon’s yard. Off the track for 279 days and having only his second run, as well as being upped in class, he will certainly come on for this afternoons race and looks a decent prospect.
Kalypso King set the pace for the first mile before dropping tamely away, finishing virtually pulled up and Averroes who was also with the pace also dropped out late on.
As was shown in the parade ring Eavesdropper’s mind was elsewhere and he ran disappointingly.
16:08 No great shock but Rewilding is to be supplemented for The Derby, with William Hill going 14/1.
16:12 Race five is the Goldring Security Services Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, a seven furlong contest which sees ten fillies chasing the prize money.
Thalia Grace is the absentee with a cough.
Confrontation was getting a little warm, Water Gypsy was swishing her tail and Marksbury is a bit biter.
16:30 It looked as though favourite Nimue was going to make all to take the maiden stakes but Water Gypsy, last out of the stalls, came with a rattling run to take up the running inside the final furlong, coming home an impressive 3¼ length winner.
Indeed behind the winner the field finished very much in a heap with Nimue just holding on for second place.
Judge Felix Wheeler had to revert to the camera to determine third spot, with Lathaat just getting the verdict over Sign Of Life.
16:44 The fact top National Hunt trainer Alan King has a runner in the next gives you a clue this may be a marathon contest and indeed it is.
Race six is the two mile RUK Sussex Stayers Handicap with eight taking their chances.
17:09 A race where everything changed in the closing stages.
Penang Princess and Curacao shared the work up front with the former setting out to make virtually all, until the closing stages that is.
By contrast Epsom Salts and Brett Vale were held up, filling the last two places for most of the race.
You may be ahead of me here but I will carry on.
Five out Penang Princess upped the pace and extended her lead but nothing panicked.
By three out the field had bunched up and Penang Princess was beaten as Curacao pulled clear with Calculating the challenger.
Now was the time for the late comers as both Brett Vale and Epsom Salts left their challenges to late and what effective challenges they were.
Brett Vale hit the front in the final 50 yards to record a three-quarter length victory and it was desperately close for second.
The time it took Felix Wheeler to call the result for second we were beginning to think we were in dead heat territory but
Brett Vale was given the verdict by a nose.
So we had the winner coming from last to first and the runner-up coming from second last.
17:20 For our final race we go from one extreme to the other.
After the two mile marathon we have a 5f sprint, the turftv.co.uk Apprentice Handicap in which eight remain in the contest, with three defecting.
A typical field of sprinters, with half the field jig-jogging round the parade ring.
17:24 Desert Strike is getting very warm as they go to post.
17:27 Going back to our second race and Frankie Dettori has reported Wedding March was "unsuited by the track."
17:39 A really scrappy race (if I were to be really unfair I would say the “s” should be silent) in which the lead changed hands several times.
Desert Strike, very warm going down, ran freely during the race.
Eventually it was Avrilo with a 0-21 record who finally got his head in front, recording a ¾ length victory under Ashley Morgan.
Tiger Trail came home second with Commandingpresence back in third.
As I said a scrappy race and certainly not a case of saving the best ‘till last.
17:41 That’s it from a lovely sunny Goodwood, although not “officially” Glorious today it is a glorious afternoon and there can surely be few better ways to spend a sunny afternoon.
From the sunny and, yes, Glorious Sussex downs a very good evening.
