Racing Live - Goodwood 14th September 2008

  t

17:39 Well that's it from Goodwood, not the highest quality meeting held at this great course but still some competitive heats all the same.

Not a very successful afternoon tipping wise but I did win a bottle of spirits in the Countryside Alliance bottle draw - so all is not lost.

Tomorrow we will be the other end of the UK as we bring you live updates from Musselburgh.

From Goodwood have a good evening.

17:10 A good end to the day for favourite backers as Thumbs Up takes the finale under Dane O’Neill. Although bit has to be said the backers may have had something in common with the horse before the race as he was sweating profusely.

Balnagore under Richard Mullen set the pace accompanied by Limbo King, although as in previous races they went no great pace early on.

It was not until they turned for home that the pace stepped up.

Turning for home it was still Balnagore in front, tracked by Limbo King and Resonate.

Shesha Bear came with a good run three out having been last for most of the race.

Two out it was the favourite who came with the most decisive run, cutting through the field to take the lead by the furlong marker.

Limbo King who had been left flat footed when the pace quickened rallied again to take second and Resonate finished third, never a danger to the winner.

17:10 I can’t decide in the last so I am going two against the field in the shape of Resonate and Merrymadcap – both look well in the parade ring, especially the latter.

16:58 Well the favourite Go Amwell obliged but at a rather skinny 3/1 in what was an oddly run race.

Trew Style under Jimmy Quinn set off like a bat out of hell and was easily 15 lengths in front come the half way stage. By the time they turned for home the leader was still 8 lengths in front and some were wondering if the exaggerated front running tactics were going to work.

The favourite was happy to settle nearer the rear in the early stages, coming through to mid division about ¾ mile from home.

As far as the main group were concerned it was Rio De Janiro who took them along with Triggers Friend. The latter was in contention for the places but the former eventually finished last.

Trew Style was still in front two out, although he was coming back to the field very quickly. Go Amwell came with a run on the far side taking the lead just before the furlong pole and never looking to be in any danger thereafter. Rock ‘N’ Roller ran on well to take the runners up spot with Triggers Friend finishing third.

The front running Trew Style held on for fourth.

16:45 To my absolute shock Go Amwell is as short as 4/1.

16:27 With my luck so far this afternoon I would have trouble tipping a waiter.

From the minimum distance in our last race we are over two miles in the next. If you want to know what to avoid, well I have tipped Go Amwell each way – with apologies to trainer John Jenkins.

16:22 Well in just about a minute the vagaries of racing were really bought home.

In a tight betting heat Silent Treatment was just sent off favourite ahead of Jubilee Juggins with my fancy Agnes Love drifting markedly.

Silent Treatment was the first to show, although it has to be said the field were closely bunched in the early stages.

Three out Agnes Love hit the front with what looked to be an impressive run, yet les than a furlong later she went out like a light, eventually finishing well last.

Agnes Love dropping out left the top two in the market battling it out but it was the top weight Jubilee Juggins who was running on best of all and soon established a clear lead.

The grey Louie’s Lad was battling it out with Silent Treatment for the runners up spot but Cocktail Party came with a rattling late run on the stands side to deny them both.

16:02 Well having seen them in the parade ring I am sticking with my selection.

15:57 We are back to the minimum distance for our next contest and it is a nursery to boot.

No great confidence in this race but my tentative selection is Agnes Love from John Akehurst's yard, although I want to take a look at them in the parade ring before opening my wallet.

15:49 Well shock, horror, a major upset in our feature race as 33/1 shot Lady Gloria jumped out of the stalls in front and was never headed, despite a late challenge from the odds-on favourite Bankable.

Trained by James Given and ridden by Tom Queally the winning filly returned to the winners enclosure in near silence.

To further confound the punter even further the 20/1 shot Drumfire claimed third spot from Lady Deauville in a photograph.

The favourite was slowly away but was soon with the field who were reasonably well bunched coming out of the loop.

As has been the case throughout this meeting the runners came centre field in the home straight and two out the eventual winner looked to be a sitting target. Firstly Lady Deauville looked to be a challenger but that run flattered to deceive.

When Dane O’Neill launched the favourite inside the final half furlong it looked game over but the filly was not going to be denied and she held on to win by ¾ length.

15:31 Another odds-on shot in our next race with Luca Cumani’s Bankable currently trading at 8/15 and in all probability he will, or should win.

However I have a sneaking regard for the bottom one Lady Deauville trained by Paul Blockley and looking for a three timer, currently trading at 5/1 is worth an each way consideration, especially with the dead eight running.

15:11 OK I can now see why the price of the favourite contracted so much (opened at 10/11 sent off 4/6).

Sent off in front by Jimmy Quinn the grey Lough Diver was never in any danger despite tiring markedly inside the final furlong. If truth be told all the runners were tired at the end, despite the pace being gentle throughout.

For most of the race they were in Indian file with little change in the order. David Pipe’s hurdler

Dinarius was in second for most of the race although Gary Moore’s Drum Major managed to beat him
into second place inside the final half furlong.

Disappointment of the race was Harlestone Gold, a promising second on debut, but never in contention today.

It is difficult to draw any conclusions from the race due to the slow pace.

15:01 Only seven runners in the next contest a 1 mile 3 furlong maiden.

My pre-race fancy Lough Diver is odds-on, it can’t be my money and I am surprised it is that short.

The gelding looked to be best in the parade ring.

14:42 It may be a cliché but this really was a cracking little race. Sir Edwin Landseer had one of his going days and was quickly out of the stalls, as was the playing up King’s Caprice.

It was the heavily sweating King’s Caprice, along with Chartist who made the early pace.
Perfect Flight under Kirsty Milczarek was soon to the fore and two out she was in the lead. Despite having her whip in her left hand perfect Flight started hanging dramatically to the left, fortunately she was far enough in front not to cause any interference and despite the drift she still won the race with something in hand from the running on Masai Moon.

King’s Caprice held on for third place d  spite being challenged on both sides by sir Edwin Landseer and Little Pete and Baldemar.

Favourite Osiris Way was never in contention.

14:33 Sir Edwin Landseer has gone in the stalls but the vet is taking a look at Sundae

14:20 The old rogue Sir Edwin Landseer is due to run in our next race – note I say due to run as his recent record for entering the stalls is not that good. Let’s hope the good Sir Edwin turns up today.

Before racing I had an each way fancy for Little Pete, having seen him in the parade ring I now have some doubts as he was on his toes.

14:05 Well it turned out to be a cracking little heat with an exciting finish.

There was some excitement at the start when the debutant Gwerthybyd reared and unseated Sam Hitchcott. The filly was withdrawn by the starter.

Three runners, joint favourite Montmorency from Godolphin, Gorward Feline and the best turned out Albaseet battled out the early stages, with the runners sticking to the centre of the course, with the exception of Tightrope who ploughed a lone furrow alongside the stands rail.

Of the three front runners Albaseet was the first to crack.

Debutant Sunniva Duke came with a promising run of the far side but it wasn’t enough to catch the leaders, although he could be one for the notebook.

Montmorency was still leading inside the final furlong when the other joint favourite Park lane came from the pack with a blistering run and only just failed to nail the winner on the line, going down by a nose.

Forward Feline held on for third, with Sunniva Duke back in fourth.

13:50 So much for a paddock inspection, they were all much of a muchness, the only negative was Megasecret who has gone to post early and looked to be on his toes.

If pushed to select one I would probably plump for the joint favourite Albaseet, currently available at 4/1.

13:43 Our opener is a six furlong two-year-old event with twelve going to post and very difficult to call, especially with half the field being newcomers.

I’m just going to pop down to the parade ring to suss them out.

13:05 Just under an hour before we are under way at what is, arguably, one of the most beautifully located race courses in the world. Nothing can beat the views of the rolling downs to the north and Chichester Harbour to the south.

As an added bonus the racing is generally of a high standard, although sadly and rarely we do have one disappointing contest this afternoon.

12:02 Good afternoon from Goodwood, where the weather is slightly overcast but we have some blue patches of sky as well.

Three non-runners so far, details on the right.
