Racing Live - Folkestone 31st March 2009

17:45 That's it from a sunny Folkestone, our first turf flat racing coverage of the season - it will be great if we have this weather at all our flat meetings this summer but I suspect that is too much to ask.

Our next live coverage will be from Aintree on Thursday, until then a very good evening.

17:43 Well the finale provided another winner for favourite backers, giving them four winners on the day.

It turned out to be a two horse race as they came down the home straight and half a furlong out it looked as though Lake Kalamalka was going to get the better of Peter Grimes. However Seb
Sanders is not one to go down without a fight and he stoked Peter Grimes up to grab victory on the line by a head.

Lake Kalamalka held on for second with the closing Bubses Boy taking third spot.

Long time leader More Tea Vicar faded in the closing stages along with the other pace setter Benozzo Gozzoli.

17:31 Another miserable bunch of tails swishers, pullers and sweaters for our finale. Nothing really stood out and it was more a case of the least worse rather than best looking in the parade ring.

Peter Grimes was marginally the best looking.

17:20 Our first contest on the round course saw six go to post over 1m 4f. If nothing else the eventual time of the race proved the official going report that the round course was riding much slower to be spot on. The time of 2’47.38” was a full 10” slower than standard.

In the race itself Seb Sanders tried for a double on the afternoon with a front running performance on the top weight Princess Flame. For all but the last half furlong it looked as though the tactic was going to work.

However, as often happens the cavalry charged and the long time leader was soon overhauled, being passed by all bar one of her rivals.

Onemoreandstay was the first to run on but tracking her every move was Ian Mongan on Mildoura who launched a well timed run down the centre of the course, holding off another running on runner, Munlochy Bay to win by half a length, with Onemoreandstay a further half length back in third.

The eventual winner was settled last for most of the race only making progress in the home straight. Indeed the first three home filled the last three places at the 7f marker.

16:45 Well Sendreni may well have been a negative in the parade ring, it just seems nobody told the horse.

Only six went to post but it actually produced the best finish of the afternoon with three in with a chance. Along with the winner, long time leader Bere Bavies and the running-on Rubenstar, not to mention the running on even faster Pippbrook Gold who almost grabbed third spot.

The first three named were all in with a chance half a furlong out but Sendreni under Frannie Norton who prevailed, giving the rider some compensation for his first race ride.

Manere Bay who was well backed was a disappointment and never in with a shout at any point in the contest.

16:34 Sendreni is a drifter here as well as being a negative in the parade ring.

Manere Bay is attracting some support 3/1 in from 5/1

16:23 If you wonder how our commentators cope I have just seen our commentator, Alan Howes, disappearing into the commentary box clutching not one, but two Yorkie bars.

16:22 No names mentioned but a well known racing professional here in the press room has been telling us about his bargain new car, which he bought for the princely sum of £200.

After a few beers last week he managed to lose his keys. Setting off to the local dealer he was told a new set of keys would cost him £400.

He then enquired about having the car scrapped and was told it would cost him £300.

Is that what you call a bargain buy?

16:16 Gamble landed this time as Imaam won the contest as an odds-on favourite should do, in the best furlong for furlong time of the day, only 1.3” slower than standard.

With the pace from the start the only serious challenger was My Flame, who was upsides two out, but once Richard Hills gave a shake of the reigns it was race over as John Dunlop’s charge won in impressive style. Certainly be best runner we have seen this afternoon.

Aahaygran was well backed in the final moments before the off. With the pace early on Karl Burke’s filly tired in the closing stages to come home sixth.

Love Allowed in contrast was putting in her best work at the end and came home an eye catching third. Certainly nowhere as good as the winner she is bound to have a race or two in her. She came home at odds of 50/1 - I cannot see her being anything near that price next time out.

Fuzzy Cat was another fancied runner, prominent in the early stages his race was over by half way.

15:58 The winner of our last race was bought in for 4,000 guineas.

Once again little that stands out as the runners for our next contest stroll round the parade ring.

The pick is Fuzzy Cat although the odds-on favourite Imaam also looks to be relaxed.

15:39 We had flip flopping favourites at the off and it was the top two in the betting who filled the top two places as they crossed the line, indeed the first three places went to the top three in the market.

The pair ran contrasting races tactically. River Rye was always with the pace, initially settled second or third but taking up the running three out.

Special Cuvee, in complete contrast, was settled in last place by Seb Sanders. Indeed he was still in last place as they passed the two furlong marker, at which point River Rye looked to be all the winner.

However Sanders had other ideas and he launched Special Cuvee with a blistering run to pass all his rivals to take the contest with a 3¼ length victory.

Paymaster In Chief was another running on in the latter stages and he came home in third spot.

15:21 Another motley collection in the parade ring for our third contest, a seven furlong seller.

Elusive Ronnie is getting worked up and is sweating between his legs. Incy Wincy is pulling hard with his handler. The favourite Special Cuvee is slightly on his toes. Tallulah’s Secret is on her toes and looks headstrong.

Snoozing looks relaxed and both Fancy set and River Rye looked OK.

15:03 As in the first race it was a case of gamble lose as Fravia was never in contention, eventually coming home fifth of the seven runners.

It has to be said the odds-on favourite wasn’t particularly convincing either.

Setting off in front he initially looked to be the easy winnr. However two furlongs from home he was challenged by the outsider of the field, 33/1 shot Chris’s Jem.

For the next furlong it looked as though we were looking at a potential upset as Alan Munro tried to get Hi Shinko to respond, initially to no avail.

It was only in the final half furlong that Munro finally managed to get the jolly’s head out in front, eventually coming home 2¼ lengths clear of Chris’s Jem.

Aahaygirl plugged on for third place.

The gambled on Fravia set off mid-division a position she held throughout.

Thoosa missed the break badly and was always behind.

14:51 Another major gamble in our second contest following on from the failed plunge in the opener.

This time it is Fravia attracting the money, 33/1 into 14/1 – perhaps dyslexic Strictly Come Dancing fans are backing her?

14:46 We have an odds-on favourite in our opener, Hi Shenko the only colt in the field, up against six fillies.

I have to say he doesn’t look that impressive in the ring, slightly on his toes and sweating at the mouth.

Miss Pusey Street was the paddock pick for me.

14:29 The opener turned out to be something of an interesting contest, if not controversial.

Black Baccara set the pace but rivals were lining up to challenge, most notably Bould Mover and Tom Folan.

Tom Folan was close to the rail under Frannie Norton but he was stuck behind Bould Mover. Norton came away from the rail and a gap appeared but he failed to go for it, instead moving out wider of the leader.

Finally catching on to what is required in the final stages Tom Folan ran on and in the end it was a bob finish with Black Baccara, under Kelly Harrison, just getting the call.

Undoubtedly had Norton gone for the gap the result would have been different. Not Mr Norton’s finest hour.

Tom Folan is definitely one to look at next time out.

14:17 A big plunge going on here Island Express is 11/2 in from 10/1

14:14 A two year old contest where nine of the ten are making their racecourse debut.

Plenty on them on their toes and getting worked up in the parade ring.

Anjomarba is very skinny and unfurnished, one for the future possibly but also one to ignore today.

The only two that caught the eye in the parade ring were Bould Mover who has racecourse experience, coming fourth at Kempton last Saturday.

Maoi Chinn Tire also caught the eye and is a much better price.

13:28 A going change on the straight course where it has dried slightly and is now Good all over

13:00 Good afternoon from Folkestone where we have a gloriously sunny day, with just a few fluffy clouds in the sky.
