Racing Live -  Doncaster 12th June 2011

17:11 That's it from a very wet, dreak, Doncaster

17:09 Close finish to the last as there is a Royal winner with Set To Music holding off the late charge of Calaf.

17:00 Hayley Moore wins the second semi-final of the Filly factor and I am glad the worse fears were unfounded.

However I still contend it was a potentially a big risk staging the semi-finals as they were and I have no regrets about raising those concerns.

16:31 We have the dulcet tones of Malcolm Tomlinson for the final two races this afternoon.

16:23 Well all four girls did well this afternoon and across the board this was a better quality semi-final than yesterdays.

The result will be announced after the next race - the money here is on Hayley Moore who was best on the afternoon, great sympathy here for both Karen and Katie. The former for having an almost impossible race to call and the latter for doing so well until the late mistakes.

16:10 A very mixed performance from Katie Stephens. She started off very well and in the first half of the race she looked the winner.

It all went awry in the closing stages when the complexion of race changed. She made some miscalls, was clearly not reading the race.

However the finish is where it all came undone .... a close finish it was a will he, won't he and she called the wrong horse.

It may be cruel but the finish of the race is on a loop here in the press room.

15:57 Plenty of detail from Katie Stephens as she calls them down for the fourth, more fluent than she was at Newbury.

15:49 Race four is The totepool Flexi Betting Handicap stakes over the round mile, with ten due to go to post.

Katie Stephens is next up for the commentary.

15:31 A very credible attempt from Karen but she came across as being nervous.

Very credibly she picked up Marvellous Value rearing in the stalls when the field was loading.

There were a couple of pauses in commentary and she was struggling to identify runners on a couple of occasions.

It has to be said her cause was not helped by a cavalry charge in the closing stages, with horses running on in all directions.

It would have been a difficult race for an experienced caller yet alone an inexperienced debutant and she called the first two home accurately only losing the third in the melee.

15:21 Karen Thacker sounded a little bit nervous as she called them down in her Geordie accent.

15:10 Next up is the Josh Walker Happy 18th Birthday Handicap Stakes over six furlongs with, now, 18 going to post in a very competitive heat.

Hayley Moore had some luck in the last race in the field did not split into two groups and no doubt Karen Thacker who is calling this one, who arguably has the most difficult race of the afternoon, is hoping there is again no split.

15:05 The going on the straight course is now good to soft.

14:56 Taking into account her level of experience that was an extremely competent performance from Hayley Moore, it was certainly a more fluent performance than Emily Jones.

The big faux-pas was when she said a horse was "being hit already" not the best phrases to use.

There were no noticeable identification issues, a couple of pauses but calling a large field on the straight course is not easy.

She spotted the run of the eventual winner and a great effort - well done Hayley.

14:45 Hayley Moore is calling them to post now, a little hesitant and seemingly struggling to identify runners, she also missed one going down.

She has as pleasant voice though.

14:35 Race two is the six furlong EBF Polypipe Median Auction Maiden Stakes with 17going to post

14:27 The going on the round course is now Good

14:21 A very credible performance from Emily Jones and she has set a good standard for her rivals this afternoon - win or lose she can go home with her head held high.

Yes there were some pauses and a few um's  and she was a little late picking up the run of the winner but that is being picky - for somebody in her position she performed very credibly.

Marks from the press room are 6/10 - which is not bad.

14:11 Emily Jones was good calling them to post, the only gripe is she is perhaps saying too much - that is her ATR role coming through.

14:02 Our opening contest is the extended 1m 6f The crownhotel-bawtrey.com Apprentice Handicap Stakes, with 15 going to post.

Very hard to judge runners in the parade ring as they are all rugged up in the rain. Mohawk Ridge was a little on his toes.

13:44  The rain is getting heavier now.

12:56  Good afternoon from Doncaster where we currently have light rain, although the forecast is for it to turn heavy later on.

The "draw" for the semi's is:-

Race 1 (1m 6f - 15 runners) Emily Jones from ATR

Race 2 (6f - 17 runners) Hayley Moore from the racing dynasty family, sister of Ryan etc. etc.

Race 3 (6f - 20 runners) Karen Thacker, the only finalist with no racing connections

Race 4 (1m - 11 runners) Katie Stephens, clerk of the course at Bath.

There are currently no non-runners.

08:54 The official going is Good on the straight course and Good to Firm, Good in Places on the round course.
