Racing Live - Doncaster 28th February 2009

17:25 That's it from Doncaster's final jumps fixture of the season - next meeting here is the opening flat meeting and The Lincoln.

We have just had a schooling session here at Donny and some interesting pointers for Cheltenham and Aintree.

Highlight of the day must have been Lidar's performance in the Bumper - whether he will get teh better of the Irish challengers is debatable but who knows?

Out next live action will be from Huntingdon tomorrow - until then good evening.

17:22 A nice little chase to end proceedings this afternoon and a thrilling finish.

In the early stages the running was set by Ela Re, but he was proving to be a handful and one had the impression he was not in front by chance.

The second favourite, Medicinal, made an absolute howler at the first and quite how Harry Skelton kept the partnership in tact possibly defied the laws of physics.

Ele Re maintained the lead until tiring approaching four out.

This left Coach Lane in front but not for long as he was soon joined by Bambi De L’Orme who leapt into the lead two out and it looked to be a decisive move.

However Leslingtaylor had other ideas and emerged from the pack as the challenger. Bambi De L’Orme still had the lead at the last but on the run-in Leslingtaylor was eating up the ground and took the lead easily to win pulling away.

16:55 What a farce!!

Since time in memorial the sun has always started to go down around this time of the day here at Town Moor.

Why therefore stage a chase race where all four fences in the home straight need to be omitted due to the low sun?

As a result the 3 mile beginners chase found itself reduced from eighteen to ten fences aith a 6 furlong run in.

To add to the stupidity of it all, exactly the same thing happened in the same race last year.

West End Rocker was sent off the uneasy 5/6 favourite and won with plenty in hand despite clouting the last.

Outsider of the three Annie’s Answer set the pace with Non De Guerre in the rear.

As they turned for home Non De Guerre set off to challenge the leader but Wayne Hutchinson on the favourite took  a peek over his shoulder, let out an inch of rain and it was race over.

Indeed Non De Guerre had to struggle to hold off a renewed challenge from Annie’s Answer to take second.

16:18 Unusually we had the bumper mid-card but it was probably one of the classier bumpers so far this season.

Lidar
was a very well backed favourite and came home a very convincing winner, clearly classier than anything else in the field.

The winner has an entry in the bumper at Cheltenham and Alan King’s charge must be in with a good chance.

Settled mid-division Wayne Hutchinson made headway in the home straight, taking up the running approaching a furlong out and once in the lead it was race over.

Millers Dawn was a running on second, just grabbing that spot from Nodfoem’s Violet on the line.

The race was delayed as Bold Exit had to have his tack changed and on the way out to the track threw his jockey, Harry Skelton off. Once at the start he was fractious and was not much better in the race itself, hampering several of his rivals as they turned out of the home straight.

15:45 Our first chase of the afternoon was the feature race, the Grimethorpe Chase, a recognised Grand National trial over 3¼ miles.

A good quality line up, although last years National winner Comply Or Die was missing due to the ground.

Idle Talk set the early pace although for most of the race there were three or four vying for the lead – Gidam Gidam, Noir Et Very, Ungaro (for a while) and Out The Black as well as Idle Talk.
Even three out Idle Talk, Out The Black, Noir Et Vert and Gidam Gidam jumped the fence line abreast.

Approaching the second last it was a two horse race with Out The Black taking up the running, chased by Gidam Gidam.

The order was the same approaching the last, although Out The Black did cross in front of Gidam Gidam.

Out The Black had a good lead at the last but Gidam Gidam was not going to give up, rallying on the run-in but the line came in tome for Out The Black, who came home the half length leader.

Gungadu was was a very disappointing last.

15:16 A 3m 1f hurdle which was overshadowed by a nasty incident approaching the eight.

Arrayou, who had led from the start stumbled approaching the fence, bringing down Leac An Scail who slid into the flight and his jockey Tjade Collier was lucky to walk away unscathed.  Leac An Scail walked away OK but unfortunately Arrayou broke his leg and his jockey Dominic Elsworth has an injured shoulder.

The fall left favourite Sheriff Hutton in front, seemingly reluctantly and he was being harried by last years winner Star Beat and Georgian King.

It was the latter who jumped into the lead at the second last and although the favourite tried to fight back Georgian King had his measure and came home the six length winner from the favourite with Star Beat 2½ lengths back in third.

14:40 They seem to be running all the hurdles first this afternoon and our second contest over 2m 3f proved to be a reasonably easy victory for the odds-on favourite Lake Legend, despite doing his best to get rid of jockey Wayne Hutchinson at the last.

There was little action in the early stages, apart from Northern Blaze coming down at the second.

Going into the side of the course Border Reiver had a good lead with Lake Legend and Carndonagh happy to let him have the lead and the remainder playing lets change places  behind these three.

It was as they turned for home that the real action started, at which point it was effectively a four horse race.

Lake Legend and Carndonagh had joined Border Reiver up front with Burn Oak also attempting to get some of the action.

By the second last Border Reiver had waved the white flag and Cardonagh had a slight advantage over the jolly.

Approaching the last Lake Legend had hit the front but the blunder stopped his momentum and it looked as though Carndonagh was going to spring a surprise victory.

However the favourite soon recovered, rallied and came home 3½ lengths clear.

The running-on Burnt Oak was ¾ length further back in third.

14:05 A sixteen runner Novices Handicap Hurdle to get us under way and we saw a brave front running performance from Alfloramoor who set off at flag fall and was never headed during the contest which was run at a fair lick.

The only filly in the contest, Cobblers Queen, came home five lengths back in second, although it is a moot point if she could have made more of a challenge had she not blundered at the last, almost unseating Andrew Tinkler. Indeed because of the mistake she was headed by the favourite Grand
Article on the run in but bravely fought back to claim second on the line.

There was also a close battle for fourth with Cootehill, who had been with the pace throughout, just getting the better of Early Wings.

Paktolos, who was well supported was mid-division throughout and never a danger.

12:54 Harry The Hawk is out of the first due to the going, sixteen remain, what odds another non-runner?

12:20 Good afternoon from Doncaster where the weather is overcast and there is a slight chill in the air.

We have a few more non-runners, details on the right.

09:18 Another non-runner Quatro Pierji is out of the first.

Here are today's selections:

1:50 5 Paktolos NAP
2:25 3 Lake Legend
2:55 9 Sherrif Hutton
3:35 8 Gidam Gidam
4:35 2 West End Rocker
5:10 1 Medicinal

08:23 The official going here is:-

Chase: Good, Good to Firm in Places
Hurdle: Good to Firm. Good in Places

There is currently one non-runner and it is a significant one, in that the 2008 Grand National Winner Comply Or Die will not be running in the 3:25 due to unsuitable going.
