Racing Live - Cartmel 23rd May 2009

20:48 Some housekeeping from earlier on. Unfortunately Paradi had to be put down after his fall earlier on and his jockey, Wilson Renwick, although missing the last got away with just being shaken up.

Also some breaking news apparently there has been a scuffle in the weighing room between Denis O’Regan and Dougie Costello. The stewards are holding an enquiry.

That’s it from Cartmel the weather has remained kind with the rain just starting.
From Cumbria good night.

20:44 I suppose it was inevitable the final race a 2m 1½f maiden hurdle would follow the trend of being a procession – especially as we had a very short priced favourite in Sambulando.

Blacktoft took a strong hold and almost pulled Christian Williams arms out of his socket and soon had a massive lead. The only surprise is he remained in the lead until the sixth where he blundered and the favourite took up the running, at which point it was race over.

Quatro Pierji  took the runners up spot, thirteen lengths behind the winner, who was eased so is probably value tor a 25 length win.

Locked Inthepocket ran on past beaten runners to claim third spot.

20:17 Something of a more competitive race for our fifth contest and a result for the bookmakers.

The well backed Moon Melody had a good lead after the last, having taken up the running after three out and looked to be the winner. However this is a long run in and as they turned for home he began to tire and the 14/1 shot Mystified headed him and cam home a 4½ length winner.

Vic’s World, who ran in snatches took third spot with the favourite, Longdale, doing his best work at the end of the contest to finish fourth.

19:41 The most convincing win of the evening in our fourth contest, a 2m 1½f chase, in the shape of Silmi, who came home a distance ahead of his rivals.

Settled towards the rear he hit the front jumping the water for the final time, where he was briefly accompanied by Jordan’s Light but was soon clear and the further they went the further he pulled away and jockey Charlie Poste will never have an easier win.

There was a battle for the minor honours, with Honour’s Dream getting the better of Danny Zuko and Jordan’s Light – the former pair running on well.

The race was overshadowed by a crashing fall by Paradi and as I write this both the horse and jockey, Wilson Renwick, are still being attended to.

19:13 Race three, our longest of the evening, over 3m 2f turned out to be another messy contest and, in the final stages those who were left were strung out once again, although the first two were relatively close.

The lead changed hands several times with Back To Bills, Murphys Beau, Adams Wine and Tully Hill all having a go in front, until Its Teescomponents took up the running four out and was soon clear with only the favourite Gershwinner staying with him.

Its Teescomponents had a three length lead entering the home straight and although the favourite was gaining he couldn’t gain quickly enough and Its Teescomponents held on by three parts of a length.

Orchard House who made a shocking mistake at the thirteenth came home third, twenty lengths behind the principals.

18:38 A stewards note from our opener. Seamus Durack, rider of the favourite in the opener, has picked up a two day ban for his use of the whip.

18:37 Our second contest, a 2m 5½f chase, saw another attempt at a front running performance.

This time from the favourite, Babe Heffron, and unlike in our last contest, he was never challenged coming home fourteen lengths ahead of his rivals, headed by Peak Seasons.

To show just how emphatic the win was, third placed South Bronx was a further distance behind.

However at least there was something of a battle for that spot with South Bronx just heading a very tired Sycho Fred approaching the line.

It was also clear to see why Sycho Fred’s two previous runs were F-U – his jumping was very sketchy indeed. However it was better than Stormont Dawn’s who deposited Seamus Durack at the sixth.

18:07 Nothing spectacular in the parade ring and, in truth, something of a disappointing contest.

The favourite Dais Return set the pace and attempted to make all, holding onto the lead until the run-in, the challenge came in the shape of Presque Perdre.

In the end we were treated to a good finish with Presque Perdre just getting his nose in front inside the final half furlong, but Dais Return responded under pressure from Seamus Durack and looked like regaining the lead but Presque Perdre managed to stick his neck out and claim a head victory on the line.

The winner had sat around third place for most of the 2m 6f contest before joining the leader three out, after wich the pair were soon well clear of their rivals.

… and that was about the only race we had as the remainder came home a distance behind.

There was a photograph to determine third place with Corporation just getting the call over Cinaman.

17:38 The eight runners in our opening hurdle are in the parade ring.

One of those neutral paddock inspections, no major negatives and none really standing out. Masra was slightly on his toes but nothing to be too worried about.

17:08 Another non-runner just come through, Stoic Leader is out of the final contest due to the ground.

16:48 Just under an hour to our opener and the crowds are still arriving. The sun is shining and the parking attendants are doing their usual sterling effort of squeezing the cars into every available space.

The official going is Good to Soft, Good in places with soft patches by the woodside.

The parts of the track I have walked are just on the soft side of good.

We have an additional non-runner - Haughton Hope is out of the 8:00 due to the going.

13:35 Good afternoon from Cartmel, home of the sticky toffee pudding. It has been cloudy all morning but the sun is just trying to break through.

It may well be four and a half hours to our opening contest but the crowds are already gathering and the best pitches besides the track are disappearing fast.

We currently have four non-runners, details on the right. Annoyingly there is one non-runner in each of the sixteen runner handicaps, thus reducing the each way terms in both to 1-2-3.
