16:17 Well that’s it from a great afternoon’s racing here at Carlisle – I think I can say one of the best afternoons racing I can recall for a long time.
Tomorrow we are at Sedgefield but from a windy Carlisle a very good evening.
16:07 Arguably the best finish was left to last in an incident packed two mile finale.
Sammy Spiderman was sent off the 11/8 favourite and was making eye catching progress before crashing out through the rail at the ditch four out.
This left Native Coll in front with the challenge coming from the twelve-year-old Hollows Mill looking to be the challenger.
At the second last it was the veteran who jumped into the lead belying his years and was running on well.
At the last he was still clear but Cooldine Lad was running on under a strong AP McCoy ride. Indeed it could well be argued that only McCoy could have got this beast up as his jumping was erratic and the horse wanted to hang. However with the full McCoy works being applied he pushed on to win by ¾ length.
Lucinda Russell’s Silverdales took a crashing fall at the last and the screens were up for a very long time before the horse managed to get back on his feet.
15:42 I suppose it was inevitable that after four exciting finishes that the longest race of the day would be the one to give us the most convincing win of the afternoon.
Coming into the race David Pipe had a 100% record at Carlisle and on the back of that record his Peut Etre Sivola was sent off the 6/4 favourite.
In a race where the pace was set by the Irish ex-pointer Waterford, the favourite was happy to track the leader and looked in with every chance. The jolly hit the final ditch, four out, and it may have briefly hampered his momentum. Having said that he was under pressure approaching two out and he was soon joined and passed by Nicozetto, who had been settled in rear by Barry Keniry.
In the end the further they went the further the leader went ahead of his field, eventually winning by 29 lengths.
The favourite couldn’t even hold on for second place with the outsider Hollows Mist running on well beating the favourite by nine lengths.
Old timer Foly Pleasant, now fourteen, was with the pace before fading leaving the back straight for the final time.
15:05 This is going to start to sound really boring but it was yet another thrilling race where the entire complexion of the race changed in the final stages.
Two runners vied for favouritism, Akilak and Malko De Beaumont and after some flip-flopping it was the former under AP McCoy who went off the 100/30 jolly.
It was the top two who fought out another thrilling finish, but that only tells part of the story.
Oso Magic led from flag fall and it was a position the ten-year-old retained until two out when the rivals were queuing to take him on.
Indeed at the second last the veteran Young Lorcan along with Polar Gunner looked to be the two most likely to fight out the finish.
However Malko De Beaumont was making steady progress under Mark Bradburne, having been content to be the whipper in for most of the race. Approaching the last he was in fourth and running on strongly.
Taking up the running in the run in he looked to be home and hosed, however McCoy was applying the pressure on Akilak who was responding well and narrowing the leaders lead with every stride.
Luckily for Malko De Beaumont’s supporters the line came in time.
14:47 Some news from the Stewards, a couple of one day whip bans. One for Davey Condon for his winning ride on Faasel and one for Ryan Mania for his ride on Quicuyo.
14:33 This is turning into a race fans extravaganza as we are treated to yet another exciting finish here at Carlisle.
Another 2m 5f chase in which Iwillrememberyou was sent off the 9/4 favourite. Although improving late on the jolly finished a never nearer third.
The early pace was set by Tully Hill, accompanied by Andrew Nick and Marleybow. Tully Hill led until they passed to post to begin their final circuit, at which point Andrew Nick hit the front.
It was a position he was to hold until the final fence, when we saw another late challenging run. This time by Wilson Renwick on Skippers Brig. The winner had been making steady progress from the open ditch four out and by the last had come upsides with the long time leader.
A good battle ensued up the run-in but the 6lbs Andrew Nick was conceding to the field proved to be decisive.
14:07 Well anyone who has braved the winds to come to Carlisle today has certainly had their moneys worth and we’ve only had two races. The second, 2m 5f, event has also proved you don’t need to have huge fields to produce a thrilling race.
The field were well bunched throughout with the grey Rimsky, Crozan, the favourite Tot O’Whiskey and Le Toscan all with the pace and having the lead at some point. Silent Bay and Faasel were happy to follow on behind.
Approaching three out the only runner out of contention was Silent Bay. Le Toscal and Crozan were the next to drop out.
Jumping the third last Tot O’Whiskey and Rimsky were side by side with the favourite just jumping into the lead.
Approaching the second last Faasal looked to be the only possible challenger to the front two but most were expecting the favourite to win easily, even more so as they jumped the second last and Tot O’Whiskey looked to have the measure of Rimsky.
However Davey Condon was creeping ever closer on Faasel and as they cleared the last he launched the Nicky Richards trained with a decisive, well timed, run to beat the favourite by a head in the closing strides.
13:40 I forgot to mention we have an all chase card here this afternoon and our first event was over two miles.
However looking at the way they finished you would have been forgiven for thinking you had witnessed a three mile chase – the heavy going is certainly taking its toll.
Bywell Beau was sent off the 2/1 favourite but threw away any chance with some very sketchy jumping and ended up coming home a tailed off sixth.
Two out it looked as though we could be witnessing a training sensation as Camden George who had been off the track for 583 days was very much in contention but the Sue Smith trained gelding tired in the final stages.
Another late fader was Mister Watzisname who had been to the fore throughout.
In the end it was a duel between two late runners Role On under Rose Dobbin (nee Davidson) and Stumped under Mark Bradburn .
The pair produced a cracking run to the line with Role On just getting the call by a neck, in a race neither deserved to lose.
12:15 Good afternoon from Carlisle where the weather is currently sunny but there is one heck of a strong breeze, the races today will take some getting.
The official going is Heavy, soft in places.
We have two non-runners so far.
