17:03 Well that’s it from a sunny Brighton – it’s a shame the racing was not as bright as the weather but the final race did give us some compensation for the uncompetitive early races.
Well done, however, to Brighton for staging the meeting at short notice – this is another of the Great Leighs replacement meetings.
From a sunny Brighton a very good afternoon.
17:00 We had to wait until the final race, a 5f handicap, but we were treated to a really cracking race –almost worth the wait.
Merlin’s Dancer set off in front with Wotashirtgull tracking along with Whiskey Junction and the other three not that far behind either.
A furlong out the field were closely packed, Whiskey Junction possibly has a hard luck story in that he was short of room, the lack of space not helped by the horse only having one eye.
However the action was coming in the centre of the course with Chris Catlin launching Magical Speedfit with a perfectly timed run to claim a half length victory, only getting in front in the final strides.
Wotashirtfull was running on strongly to take second place with the long time leader Merlin’s Dancer holding on for third.
The favourite make my dream was also putting the best effort towards the end but finished a never nearer fourth.
16:30 A well backed favourite in our 6f contest, our penultimate contest.
Green Beret was very well backed this morning, drifted on course but was soon backed in again – going off at evens.
Glamorous Spirit set the pace under Chris Catlin, chased by Cecily, with Flamsteed third and the favourite settled by Jimmy Fortune in fourth.
Two out Jimmy Fortune asked Green Beret for an effort and the race was over in a matter of strides as the colt showed great acceleration, making his rivals looking leaded hoofed.
Flamsteed ran on well to take second, with Glamorous Spirit taking third.
16:07 Well I’m in shock, we have had a touch of variety in out fourth contest, a 1m 1f Handicap.
For the first time this afternoon we did not have a front running winner.
The favourite King Supreme did have an initial early lead, seemingly under sufferance, but Dove Cottage, hard pulling, soon had a clear lead.
Richard Hughes was much happier settling the favourite in second place, with the others tracking behind, including our tip Start Stride who was the most consistent of the lot – always last.
Turning for home Dove Cottage had a four length lead but approaching two out Richard Hughes gave a couple of shakes of the reign and King Supreme was still in the lead and never looking to be in any danger.
Riqaab, mid-division throughout, ran on to take the runners-up spot.
The free running Dove Cottage came home second last.
15:33 Something approaching a race in our third contest, a 1m 4f handicap.
Good Effect was first out of the stalls but his lead was short lived as Moonshine Creek came through and took up the running after two furlongs.
The favourite, King’s Majesty, by contrast was settled last by Shane Kelly.
Four out Moonshine Creek still had the lead but both Good Effect and Megalala were on his quarters with Star Choice also mounting a challenge.
The favourite made some progress to be third as they entered the home straight with Star Choice and King’s Majesty the main challengers and Good Effect still in with a chance if good enough.
Moonshine Creek still had a good lead inside the final furlong but Star Choice was making a very strong challenge, closing on the leader with every stride. Also Good Effect seemed to find second wind and was also running on.
The favourite, by contrast, was unable to make any headway.
For Moonshine Creek the line just came in time to claim a diminishing half length victory over Star Choice. Good Effect was 1¼ lengths further back in third, with King’s Majesty only managing a disappointing fourth.
15:02 Our second contest a 1m 2f claiming stakes was more a procession than a race, although it was a very tight betting heat, we had three co-favourites at one point before racing.
Western Roots had an absolute flyer out of the stalls at set off at a brisk pace. Benedict Spirit did try to make a race of it but never got close to the leader.
Like the first the race was a procession, with little change to the order for most of the contest, although Cactus King did make some late progress but still came home ten lengths behind the runner-up.
14:20 Our opener a mile maiden stakes was a two horse race according to the betting with Brunston narrowly going off the 6/4 favourite with Alsahil just behind at 7/4.
It was those two who came home first and second, however not in the order the betting predicted.
Alsahil was out of the stalls well and soon led. Brunston, by contrast, missed the break and had to make up ground, which he soon did and the top pair were soon in front, albeit at a very slow pace.
Carbon Hoofprint and Our Day Will Come tracked the front pair, whilst Wild Lymp, who had been a pain going down and entering the stalls, was soon behind and eventually came home virtually pulled up.
When the pace did pick up in the home straight Richard Hills on Alsahil kicked on and Jimmy Fortune, substituting for an unwell Ryan Moore, was unable to galvanise Brunston to close the gap.
Come the line Alsahil had a 1½ length advantage and the remainder of the field came home at similar intervals, apart from the tailed off Wild Lymp.
13:26 Good afternoon from Brighton where we have a nice sunny aftenoon. Another change in the going which is now back to good, good to firm in places, which is what it was yesterday evening.
Two more non-runners, both in the 4:20, with the size of the fields now, I trust commentator Lee McKenzie will be returning half his fee!!!
08:58 Disappointingly small cards for this additional fixture, transferred from Great Leighs. We currently have two non-runners, details on the right.
07:37 After 6mm of rain overnight the going has eased and is now Good
