Racing Live - Beverley 10th June 2009

16:44 That’s it from Beverley where, apart from a few spits and spots, the rain held off and a good crowd witnessed what was, in all honesty, a mediocre card.

Despite the lack of quality we had a couple of good finishes and some shock results.

I now have the long drive south, to be broken up by a stop ay a very good American diner.

From Beverley a very good evening.

16:42 Seven runners over seven furlongs for our final contest and the betting had it as a two horse race with Espiritu 10/11 and Crime Writer 5/4.

The favourite was in the colours of Sir Robert Ogden, colours more associated with national hunt racing.

Crime Writer hails from the Mark Johnston stables, so it is no surprise he was the front runner, although Billy Bowmore did challenge him for the lead in the very early stages.

Espiritu was settled in third place along with Freya’s Flight.

Cottam Breeze was last from the start, no surprise as she was really on her toes in the parade ring, attempting to demolish the rail at one point.

Two out Crime Writer still had the advantage, although he was coming under pressure. Meanwhile Tom Queally was in the centre of the course making steady progress.

Drawing level at the furlong marker Queally shook Espiriyu’s reins and it was race over, winning as he pleased by 4½ lengths.

Crime Writer took the runners up spot, with the newcomer Helieorbea doing his best work in the closing stages to take third spot.

16:13 The end of the front running winners, at least for the moment, as the first of our two seven furlong races went to a late finisher.

Ace Of Spies, sporting a bright blue visor, set off in front and still had a healthy four length lead turning for home.

He held the lead until a furlong out when headed by Carpe Diem with what looked like a winning run. However Tony Hamilton on Kabis Amigos waited even longer and although he had to apply a great deal of pressure, his mount responded, running on well and coming home by a comfortable 3½ length margin.

Carpe Diem held on for second spot with the running on Flashy Max taking third.

The favourite Desert Hunter, with Jamie Kyne looking for a three timer, was disappointing finishing mid division, having not been put under too much pressure.

15:45 Down to ten furlongs for our fourth contest in which only six faced the starter.

Two minutes later it was the bookmakers who were smiling as the 4/9 favourite Joe Jo Star was turned over.

Bollin Freddie
was the one who produced the shock, under late jockey change Jamie Kyne. Sent off in front he set a fair pace, leading by three or four as they turned for home.

Two out Paul Hanagan asked the favourite for his run and, for a brief moment it looked as though the jolly was going to oblige. However the challenge was soon over as it was apparent Bollin Freddie was not only holding off the challenge he was opening up again.

Joe Jo Star had another go and was making inroads but it was clear any effort was going to be too little, too late.

15:20 Echo’s of Windsor on Monday evening with fun and games in the stalls before our longest race of the afternoon a 1m 4f handicap.

Dulce Domum decided to rear in stall 5, just as Green Endeavour was walking into the adjacent stall 6. Green Endeavour backed out and clearly upset by the antics of he fellow runner just refused to enter the stalls and had to be withdrawn.

When they set off Catherine Gannon, who is in good form at the moment, set off in front on Chic Shanique.

Haafhd Time, Nut Hand, Rosewin and Luckett pracked sharing the minor places and there was little change in the order throughout.

Still leading as they turned for home the rivals were lining up and the first to challenge was the favourite Addison de Witt, however he did not respond that well to Paul Hanagan’s urgings and when Rosewin appeared on his shoulder the challenge petered out.

Indeed it was Rosewin who ran on best of all and was closing on the long time leader and apprentice Jamie Kyne, who has impressed a number of race watchers recently, wore down the long time leader in the final strides to claim a head victory. The winner was trained by veteran trainer Owen Brennan, better known for his jumpers, and was the 74 year olds first winner for fourteen months.

Addison de Witt was running on again in the closing stages but had to settle for fourth, being unable to get past Nut Hand.

14:45 Our second 5f contest of the afternoon was certainly a better affair than our opener, reflected in the faster time.

It also produced a good finish with three latecomers in with chances.

First to seriously go for home was Only A Game, who actually tried to be doing his utmost to throw the race away, ziz-zagging down the home straight like a drunk after a good Saturday night session.

The challengers then came down the centre of the course as joint favourite Soto and the low drawn
Ryedane both came from the pack and had the winning post been 10 yards further the result would probably have been different.

However Only A Game had just enough in hand to win by a diminishing neck from Soto with Ryedane a head back in third.

There was quite a gap to the fourth placed Spirit Of Coniston who got the better of a three way go.

14:19 Well I wish I had followed my own advice.

Maidtorun ran no sort of race, was never in contention, and was an utter disappointment.

By contrast, Midget, our paddock eye-catcher ran an excellent race on debut, settling early, held up early on before coming with a late run down the centre of the course to claim  a half length victory.

The runner-up Man And Dave had the supposed poor draw in stall one, yet was in front after two furlongs and was only headed on the line.

Gasparilla unshipped Andrew Mullen as they came out of the parade ring and effectively run a circuit of the round course before being recaptured. Once recaptured the consensus was she would be withdrawn but she was taken slowly to the start and delayed the off by seven minutes in the process.

She ran freely throughout and was with the pace. Surprisingly she managed to take third spot although I am not sure if that is testament to her ability or the inability of her rivals.

3:51 A short priced favourite in the opening 5f claimer in the shape of Maidtorun but, oh boy, is he on his toes in the parade ring and he was very reluctant to leave the pre-parade ring.

Of the newcomers Midget really caught the eye.

13:25 We are just having a demonstration of the hearing dogs for the deaf – these dogs are so clever, most impressive indeed.

13:06 Good afternoon from Beverley, where it is bright but overcast. As I have driven here we seem to have picked up a few more non-runners.

Full details on the right.

Once again the non-runners seem to help the bookies with the 17 runner handicap now down to 14 and two other contests dropping below the dead eight.
