17:21 That's it from day three at Ascot - certainly a much more enjoyable and fun day than yesterday. We can also say amen to The Filly Factor, the organiser of the competition is walking round with a big smile on her face, small wonder as she has the result she wanted from the outset. Let's hope this competition makes Racing For Change think very carefully before they launch their next gimmick. In the end it went relatively well and that was in spite of the poor, ill thought through, organisation of the competition. Well done to all the girls who took part in the competition and I have no doubt we will, in time, have our first professional female commentator. Whether it turns out to be the winner of this competition is open to debate - my money would be on one of the losing semi-finalists. My "weekend" starts here and the next coverage will be from Sandown Park on Wednesday, from Ascot a very good evening. 17:13 A good little sprint to end proceedings for the weekend and it went to the top weight Medicean Man with Harry Bentley making the most of his 5lb claim and getting the better of Duchess Dora who was fighting back as they approached the line. Swiss Franc ran on late to claim third spot with the long time leader Judge 'n Jury taking fourth spot.
17:02 The final race is the Chris O'Keefe Sprint Handicap over five furlongs with 13 going to post. Two negatives are Murura and Liberty Lady, my tentative pick is Poppy Seed. 17:02 Hayley Moore wins The Filly Factor
16:39 The John Manderville Maiden Fillies Stakes, over the straight mile, saw seven face the starter and Richard Hills making all on Raasekha. Indian Mist kept him company in the early stages until the favourite, Regal Heiress, made a move two out but she was unable to pass the leader. Indeed it was Nabah who turned out to be the danger to the winner but even she was only able to get within 1 1/4 lengths of the winner with Regal Heiress four lengths back in third.
16:08 Another competent call, this time from Hayley Moore - both girls have put in good efforts this afternoon and whichever one does not win can go home with their head held high. In the race itself we had another close finish but the verdict went to Ivan Vasilevich who made all and held off a determined late challenge from Jamie Spencer on Grumeti. The favourite, Gatewood, kept the leader company for most of the contest but when push came to shove he could not competw and had to settle for fourth spot. Muntasib came home third. 15:55 Race four is the Keltbray Handicap with seven going to post for the 1m 2f contest. Gatewood is sweating up quite badly between his legs. Groomed is swishing his tail like a windmill and has two handlers. 15:33 A very competent call from Rachel Casey in the 1m 4f Eagle Rock Handicap, her task not made any easier by the fact the colours of many of the runners were similar. Once again the runners drifted to the left in the home straight and one theory here is they are shying away from the huge speakers inside the course. Star In Flight set out to make all with English Summer keeping him company. The favourite Burj Nahar and stablemate Chock A Block formed the next rank, with the other three tracking. Richard Hills produced Mehaam to head a bunching field inside the final furlong, with Kiama Bay his closest pursuer. Chock A Block came home third. The favourite Burj Nahar was most disappointing beating only one home.
14:55 Haley's voice wasn't as strident but her commentary was stuttering in early stages, you could picture her looking up the colours as she called. Rachel is marginally the better of the two so far. Of course Hayley Moore did have the distraction of calling her brother home as he produced Blanche Dubawi with a perfectly timed run to record a head victory over King Ferdinand. Nasharra had set the early pace with Apollo D'Negro and Da Ponte also to the fore. Inside the final furlong King Ferdinand still had the advantage with Foxtrot Hotel looking to be teh biggest danger - until, that is, Moore launched his challenge. The two battled hard but once Blanche Dubawi eased ahead a hundred yards from the post the result was clear and he recorded a head victory. Foxtrot Hotel came home third two and a half lengths in arrears with Remotelinx finishing fourth.
14:43 Race two is the GL Events Owen Brown Handicap over six furlongs with eight going to post. Very difficult from a paddock perspective with them all much of a muchness. There were three who stood out slightly more than the others namely, Foxtrot Hotel, Clara Zetkin and Apollo D'Negro, with marginal preference for the first named. 14:19 Not a bad call from Rachel Casey - she peaked a tad too soon. However the "pitch" issue raised its head as the commentary was lost in the noise. She also had an exciting finish to call as Zumbi and Glen Moss battled to the line with the former prevailing by a neck. Glen Moss set out to make all and looked destined to win until Ryan Moore produced his late charge on the winner. Blue Tiger was sent off the 11/10 favourite and looked to be in a challenging position two out before fading and beating only one home. Mabaany ran on well for third and will come on for the run. 14:05 A trappy contest to get un underway with six babies making their racecourse debut in the Anders Foundation EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes, over six furlongs. From the top. Blue Tiger looks nice but has scope to grow, Confucius Elite is another with scope to grow and was looking edgy. Glen Moss is another small horse with potential. Humungosaur looked fit as was Mabaany. Young Prince was slightly on his toes and looks immature. Zumbi is another who looks fit. Narrow selection is Mabaany. 13:43 The sun is shining and the flowers are blooming, there are not many better places to go racing on a sunny Sunday.
13:40 The Filly Factor finalists, Rachel Casey (in purple) and Hayley Moore being interviewed by Rishi Persad with Richard Hoiles hidden behind him.
12:40 The final lunch report of the weekend and today it is Game Pie, cold pork and salad.
Note my collection of coloured pens. 12:36 It is interesting to see the campaign to rig the Filly Factor result is gathering pace with jockeys now tweeting to encourage people to vote for one of the particular candidates. 12:24 Good afternoon from a sunny Ascot. The non-runner count is now four. 09:22 Another non-runner, details on the right. 09:11 This afternoon sees the conclusion of The Filly factor, the ill-conceived idea to try and find a female racing commentator, racegoers at Ascot who have paid good money to go racing will have to listen to four of the six races called by the would be amateur callers, whilst those listening off course will hear the highly professional Richard Hoiles - I know which I would rather hear. The winner will be decided by a public text vote which means the winner will not necessarily be the better commentator but the one who can get the most of their friends to vote. Indeed one of the finalists has already begun a Twitter campaign to try and get votes. In a way it seems appropriate that such an ill judged concept should be determined in such a farcical manner and the sooner we see the back of this ridiculous competition the better for all concerned. If such a contest really must be held then the final should have been decided by a panel of experts, and I do not mean the so called experts who decided the semi-finals. Final judging should be made by a panel consisting of those who actually decide the appointment of the existing professional commentators. I notice in a Tweet this morning Tommo has taken credit for the ides of The Filly Factor - not something I would boast about if I were you Tommo. 08:59 Day three of the meeting sees yet another going change, the official going is now Good. The going stick reading is : stand side 8.3, centre 8.7, far side 8.3, round 7.5 There are currently two non-runners.
