Despite a minor blip two furlongs out, when it appeared he was not going to respond to urgings, Sea The Stars maintained his magnificent 2009 record in taking the Juddmonte Stakes at York. He faced only three rivals, with Mastercraftsman his main rival. When Johnny Murtagh set Mastercraftman off two out, Mick Kinane asked Sea The Stars to follow and for a stride or two it looked as though he was not going to respond. However he soon found his stride and went on to record a length victory in a course record time. Mick Kinane was effusive in praising his mount, saying, "The last couple of years I have been searching for a good horse, and then suddenly a great one comes along in the twilight of my life, and it is a privilege. "He is the best horse I have ridden, and I have ridden some great ones." |

| Guest Cleared Over Sobers Run | ||||||||||||
| Thursday, 15 August, 2009 | ||||||||||||
The long running saga of the run given to Sobers by Paul O'Neill in 2006 has finally ended, following a disciplinary hearing at the BHA. Trainer Richard Guest has had his appeal against a £3,000 fine handed out over the affair upheld. O'Neill was banned for 21 days and the horse suspended for 40 days after the stewards decided the jockey had failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to secure the best possible placing. On the day Sobers finished fourth beaten by 23 lengths having appeared to have been ridden tenderly throughout the race. At the original enquiry O’Neill had reported that, on the turn into the home straight, the horse had gurgled all the way to the line. The appeal was delayed pending the outcome of the BHA's Integrity & Licensing Department’s investigation into the betting patterns surrounding the race. The Panel accepted that Guest was mistaken in believing his jockey and to have supported him in this case. The Panel was also satisfied that Guest was not responsible for the instructions which O’Neill followed on the day and that he should not have supported his jockey’s ride during the racecourse enquiry. |
