Although I like all racing I do much prefer jump racing to flat racing, mainly because it is more exciting.
However nothing can surely match the excitement of the final day of the 2007 flat season at Doncaster and the battle for the jockeys championship.
For those of you who are not aware of the finer points of the battle, Jamie Spencer and Seb Sanders have been fighting nip and tuck to claim the title with teh lead changing hand several times.
Coming into the final day Seb Sanders was one ahead.
Come the first race for professional jockeys Seb Sanders was in second place on Incomparable, seemingly about to be well beaten by Omnicat ridden by Eddie Ahern.
Omnicat was being a double handful drifting to the left. Just short of the finishing line Omnicat veered hard right unshipping Eddie Ahern. Having unshipped his rider the somewhat wild Omnicat then did his best to take Sanders mount out of the race as well. Sanders managed to get his mount over the line in first place.
Two up to Sanders.
In the next race Spencer only just failed to win by a neck, still two up to Sanders.
Spencer's luck changes in the next race grabbing a neck victory, taking the score back to one up for Sanders.
Two races later and Sanders luck starts running out as his mount is beaten by the shortest possible distance.
Going into the last race of the season Sanders intended mount is a non-runner and Spencer needs to win the race to tie the championship.
I suppose you can guess what happens next - yes Spencers mount wins by the biggest winning margin of the day.
What a season, what a climax.
Well done to both of them in what was, in the end, a fitting finish to the season.
And thanks for an exciting championship.
