There is nothing quite like the atmosphere at Epsom at the Derby meeting and this year the atmosphere will be all the more special as the Derby meeting is Epsom's only meeting in 2008 as it undergoes a major refurbishment.
Friday sees two Group One races with the Coronation Cup, a mixed age race run over the Derby distance and The Oaks, the fillies 1½ mile classic. Appropriately Friday is ladies day at the course and is also the quieter of the two days.
Saturday is Derby day itself and although the crowds are not as vast as they were in the past. Earlier in the 20th century when Derby day was on a Wednesday most of the City of London and, indeed, Parliament would shot down for the afternoon.
Derby day is a day of contrasts from the formal morning dress of the Queen's Stand right through to the informality of The Hill where admission is still free.
