Royal Ascot 2008

Recent updates

Saturday sees the finale of the 2008 festival and we have just the one Group One, the Golden Jubilee Stakes with 20 runners over six furlongs.

Kings Stand second Takeover Target re-appears and must be in with a chance.

Kingsgate Native has a better draw than he did on Tuesday however he is arguably better over five furlongs than six.

The overseas challenge looks good with Marchand D’Or a good French raider, although his centre draw is not encouraging.

The O’Brien cam have two very strong challengers. Astronomer Royal is a hold up horse and I think the better of the Ballydoyle runners, the centre draw is off putting though. Johnny Murtagh has opted to ride US Ranger and he has a good berth in stall 5, with the form of the Tipperary yard this week it would be foolish to ignore this runner.

I can see the all conquering stable taking the Hardwick stakes at 3:05 in the shape of Macarthur who was third in the Coronation Cup at Epsom. He was hampered in the closing stagers but was arguably beaten at the time. This race is much easier and he should win. Sir Michael Stout’s Maraahel could give the selection most to do.

The other Group Two is the 28 runner Wokingham at 4:25. I can see this going to one of the so called unfancied trainers in the shape of Linda Perratt’s Big Timer (although may will argue that Miss Perratt is far from unfancied).

In the other race with little solid form the opening Chesham Stakes is a difficult one to call although on known form Free Agent looks to be the one.

In the Duke Of Edinburgh at 4:55 Mad Rush finds it very difficult to win but this could be the day.

The meeting finishes with the longest race of the meeting the Queen Alexandra over 2 miles 5½ furlongs. Ryan Moore had his first Royal winner this week he could well end the meeting with another in the shape of Distinction.
