Royal Ascot 2008

Recent updates

Just the one Group One on day four, but for me the most interesting of the week.

For the first time in a while none of the major Guineas winners are competing, however it does not detract from the race.
Lush lashes drops back to a mile after disappointing in the Oaks, had this race been over a mile and a quarter then Lush Lashes would be strongly fancied, however I think this mile will be too sharp for her considering the opposition.

Love Of Dubai has been supplemented for this race but in all honesty looks to be outclassed.

The market leaders will be Spacious and Infallible. The former was runner up to Natagora in the Newmarket Guineas so can handle a mile although she looks to be better suited by 1¼ miles.

The latter impressed when winning the Nell Gwyn over seven furlongs in April. She only managed to finish fourth in the Guineas and it poses the question is she better at seven than eight?

Of course all the big races this week have been won by Ballydoyle and their entry today is Psalm, who has a few pounds to find with her rivals. However she looks to have scope for improvement and at 8/1 is a good price.

Forty minutes earlier is the King Edward VII Stakes over 1½ miles and this sees my banker of the meeting in the shape of Bronze Cannon who was considered for the Derby but eventually opted for this race instead. The colt is crying out for 1½ miles and he should have the measure of his opponents. Having said that there are some strong rivals to beat, not least Conduit who was most impressive when he sluiced up at Epsom.

The opening race looks like one for the Irish but not the O’Brien yard. Derby winning trainer Jim Bolger sends out Cuis Ghaire who will go off a short priced favourite.

The Wolferton at 4:20 looks a really difficult race to crack. Bushman is looking for a three timer and although 13 lbs higher than last time out he must have a chance. However there are a number of progressive sorts in the field including Emirates Skyline an impressive winner of the Rose Bowl at Epsom, Mutajarred who is stepping up in class and Monte Alto.

However I am going to stick with Bushman.

In the Queens Vase Patkai looks to be an improver with scope for even further improvement.

Just when we thought we were having an easy afternoon we are hit with a 30 runner handicap. I just don’t have a clue – if pushed then a small bet on Atlantic Story.
